HOW TO ENFORCE FARES WITHOUT POLICE

TransLink CEO Ian Jarvis is defending the need to keep the Transit Police service even though a big part of the force's job – enforcing fare payment – should all but vanish when fare gates and smart cards come to the transit system.

They will still need to enforce fares. SF Muni has turnstyles and they enforce fares with officers, BART police have to conduct stings watching for those who jump the gates, the problem will not go away. The Faregates are mainly so Translink can enforce the zone system.
