The condition of the schools really is a disgrace. The facilities are getting more rundown by the year, and they need work. So what's to be done?
Here is what we suggest: Open your eyes and see that there already are tens of millions of tax dollars sloshing around Portland for all sorts of public make-work projects. We're about to build a billion-dollar mystery train to Milwaukie and a wildly extravagant streetcar to Lake Oswego, all with tax dollars. The funds come from every level of government -- federal, state, and local. The local dough usually comes through "urban renewal," which robs from schools and public safety to promote condominium projects.

A battery of elected ideologues opens fire on those who serve the public

 Thus America is suddenly at war against its own teachers-- along with its firefighters, police officers, public health researchers and caregivers, sanitation workers, census takers, park rangers, air traffic controllers, and the whole horde of 'do-nothings' on the public payroll. Fire 'em, bust their unions, take away their democratic rights, slash their pay, increase their workloads, eliminate their pensions, and (most especially) scorn them.
"Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice," declared Sen. Barry Goldwater in his failed presidential try in 1964. Today, though, the billionaires masquerading as Goldwater's libertarian heirs are seeking only to 'liberate' themselves from our democratic society's essential rules of fair play. They resent paying taxes for anything that benefits others, they demand freedom from regulation of their corporate excesses, and they absolutely reject the notion that workers, consumers, environmentalists, and
other community interests should have any power over corporate whim.
Their sense of entitlement is nauseating, and their ongoing militant maneuvering in state after state to dis-empower America's workaday majority constitutes a declaration of war against our people's democracy. "Extremism in the defense of elitism" is their ugly purpose. That is a vice.
Ugly Number One is that theirs is a most uncivil war. It's based on demonizing some of the best and most useful workers in our country, pitting these people's very modest incomes and perfectly reasonable benefits against those who've been knocked down and have less. "Don't look at us," shout the corporatists who've been doing the downsizing and privatizing, outsourcing and offshoring--that have knocked down the middle class and held down the poor. "Instead, look at those just above you who are struggling to stay in the middle class. It's unfair that they have health coverage and you don't, so let's pull them down, too."

The book is a curious one in that most of it is obvious though one mustn’t say it. Does not diversity just cause trouble, almost everywhere? As much as one might want it to lead to comity, it doesn’t. None of these groups is evil, but none mix well. Usually they kill each other.

Preface before the actual post content: TriMet GM Neil McFarlane recently sent out a memo to TriMet employees regarding discussions about TriMet, both in social media such as blogs, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as conversations in public with other employees because “any comment made can become part of a news story.” Neil expressed concerns about misinformation spreading when unofficial sources release any information (e.g. a rider overhearing that service is going to be cut and then blogging about it) and then the media potentially using that as the basis for a story.
I thought it was interesting that no comment was made regarding official TriMet information being wrong, which has been known to happen. Off the top of my head, there was the time that TriMet spokeswoman Mary Fetsch told Oregonian reporter Joseph Rose that the door buttons on the outside of the train are used by passengers to open the doors for themselves when a train arrives at a platform (that’s not really how they work), and the time last year when TriMet was promoting 4th of July eventsKGW and other news outlets that the door buttons on the outside of the train are “emergency stop buttons.” that you could not actually travel to and from by taking TriMet. And someone who wasn’t a rail operator (because anyone who is rail certified would know better) told
Seriously TriMet, my kingdom for an official release, webpage, something on what those door buttons are and how they work.

...the operator is responsible for the safety of the train as a whole (which includes being prepared to stop if a car or person enters the right of way), but passengers have to show personal responsibility as well. While no one wants to intentionally separate a child from his or her parents, it really is up to the parents to look out for the safety of their children on and around the trains because that’s part of being a parent, and it is not part of an operator’s job description to be a babysitter.

Oregon: Study Finds Light Rail System Rarely Used

     "Light rail is actually a low-capacity system, and the streetcar is simply irrelevant. TriMet's buses carries two-thirds of all regional transit trips on a daily basis, and that's the service that should be recognized as high-capacity transit. Unfortunately, bus service is being sacrificed by TriMet in order to build costly new rail lines that carry relatively few people."

They took all of us on the road in a bus THE VERY FIRST DAY of training!
According to Shelly Lomax they no longer do that, all trainees have to spend the first week in the yard driving around the parking lot!

  • Make the adult fare $2 but only give 90 minutes of riding time (and not boarding time; the equivalent of about 1 hour in the current system)
  • Charge $2.50-$3.00 for a fare valid for 3 or 4 hours
  • End the zone system
  • Make Ticket Vending Machine- and operator-sold fares follow the same policies
  • Make youth and honored-citizen fares the same and 1/2 the price of adult fares
  • Put ticket printers in buses to replace transfers
  • Maybe eliminate 14-day and half-month passes, instead also offering a discount 7-day pass for youths/honored citizens

Did you see the Diane Sawyer special report? They removed ALL items from a typical, middle class family's home that were not made in the USA .
There was hardly anything left besides the kitchen sink. Literally. During the special they are going to show truckloads of items - USA made - being brought into replace everything and will be talking about how to find these items and the difference in price etc..
It was interesting that Diane said that IF every American spent just $64 more than normal on USA- made items this year, it would create something like 200,000 new jobs!
I WAS BUYING FOOD THE OTHER DAY AT WALMART and ON THE LABEL OF SOME PRODUCTS IT SAID 'FROM CHINA'. FOR EXAMPLE THE "OUR FAMILY" BRAND OF MANDARIN ORANGES SAYS RIGHT ON THE CAN 'FROM CHINA.' I WAS SHOCKED SO FOR A FEW MORE CENTS I BOUGHT THE LIBERTY GOLD BRAND OR THE DOLE SINCE IT'S FROM CALIF.
Are we Americans as dumb as we appear --- or --- is that we just do not think while the Chinese, knowingly and intentionally, export inferior and even toxic products and dangerous toys and goods to be sold in American markets?
70% of American believe that the trading privileges afforded to the Chinese should be suspended. Why do you need the government to suspend trading privileges?
DO IT YOURSELF, AMERICA!!
Simply look on the bottom of every product you buy, and if it says 'Made in China ' or 'PRC' (and that now includes Hong Kong), simply choose another product, or none at all. You will be amazed at how dependent you are on Chinese products, and you will be equally amazed at what you can do without.
Who needs plastic eggs to celebrate Easter? If you must have eggs, use real ones and benefit some American farmer. Easter is just an example. The point is do not wait for the government to act. Just go ahead and assume control on your own.
THINK ABOUT THIS: If 200 million Americans refuse to buy just $20 each of Chinese goods, that's a four billion dollar trade imbalance resolved in our favor...fast!!
Most of the people who have been reading about this matter are planning on implementing this on May 1st and continue it until June1st. That is only one month of trading losses, but it will hit the Chinese for 1/12th of the total, or 8%, of their American exports. Then they might have to ask themselves if the benefits of their arrogance and lawlessness were worth it.
Remember, MAY 1st to JUNE 1st!!!!!!

CHRIS PARKER UPDATE

I just came from a visit with Chris and can report that he is in remarkably good spirits considering the situation he is in.

I don't think he understands the court proceedings very well as his interpretation of the last hearing was considerably different than my interpretation of them, this is what happens when you don't have decent legal representation when you are involved with the (in)justice system.

I also brought up the topic of the restraining order violations and how it was my understanding that there were no violations of the restraining order.
It turns out that BLOG POSTS are being counted as actual violations of the order! The bail is ridiculously high due the restraining order violations!
I find this incredible, what a system we have here!

He was incredulous that the Mayor of Portland still gets to be mayor when he was accused of the exact same offense but Chris gets fired from his job as bus driver!
I agree with him on that topic, double standards are a way of life in Amerika!

I also asked him about that "suicide" jacket.
He told me that when he was brought to jail they sent him to some shrink who did an evaluation.
Apparently Chris misunderstood the question and he thought the doctor was talking about "Seaside" instead of "suicide" which then lead the doctor to conclude that he was delusional so he was outfitted with some uncomfortable and ridiculous Velcro outfit which we saw in his first court hearing.

It's all very sad indeed!

Thanks Al.  I did speak to the Training and the Schedules Departments, and did observe a few road reliefs myself.  Of the observations that I made, the operators appeared to be relaxed and not hurried in making the adjustments to their seats and mirrors.  In one instance, the operator being relieved spoke of problems encounter along the route that day to the relief operator. I also did not observe any excessive speeds.  I will admit that I did not speak to any of the relief operators as they were driving in service.  I will be adding your concern to the Bus Transportation Safety Committee agenda for discussion.  I will also take a look at your blog.

Down with PMLR! (if only)

I believe the light-rail system is beneficial in several ways. It helps the environment by getting some cars off the road. It helps relieve traffic congestion and is convenient for people to use. That's all good stuff. But is now the right time to implement such a huge and costly ($1.5 billion) project with government agencies and schools claiming multimillion-dollar budget shortfalls? 


I hope the next time TriMet decides to put in a new light-rail line it doesn't end up going through your yard, because if you are in its path, you will have absolutely no say in the matter. I would prefer they go away and leave me alone, but that's not going to happen.

Unfortunately for the workers, the first thing these transit managers want to do is cut employee wages and benefits because it's an easy fix. They continue to operate the same level of service that taxpayers won’t fund, they keep the same size work force to operate the service that taxpayers refused to fund, and they accomplish this by cutting employee wages and benefits by 20-30 percent.

Why no bus service for new Sellwood Bridge?

I just learned from the minutes of a recent SMILE meeting published in THE BEE that Tri-Met does NOT plan to resume the bus route which previously served the Tacoma Street centric part of Sellwood and Westmoreland when the new Sellwood Bridge is completed.
This decision is shortsighted and damaging to our neighborhood. A major part of the debate over the bridge design had to do with ensuring wide enough lanes for bus access —not to mention the issue of a possible streetcar! I strongly supported the new bridge planning because I have greatly missed the trans-Sellwood-Bridge route, which was discontinued when the old bridge was declared unsafe for buses, firetrucks, and semi's.
The discontinued route, I believe the old number 12, was THE most direct route, with the least amount of walking and NO transfers, for south Sellwood/Moreland residents wanting to reach the following destinations: The OHSU wellness center and clinics, John’s Landing businesses, PSU classes and special events, the Portland Saturday Market in the South Park Blocks, and downtown shopping and cultural attractions.
The existing Route 70 requires transfers (and far more walking for some, due to its alternating 13th and 17th street routes), and its frequency is far less than that of Route 19, which is an 8-block-walk from the Tacoma Street area.
Tri-Met’s decision to drop this route needs to be challenged in the strongest possible terms. It is a slap in the face to many residents who devoted hours at bridge design input meetings to ensure that mass transit would have a CENTRAL role in the rebuilt bridge. Tri-Met needs to understand that the loss of this route is especially damaging to PSU students carrying a backpack full of books, seniors (as well as employees) who wish to get to the OHSU wellness center/clinics quickly, and shoppers visiting Portland’s largest farmers' market or downtown stores, who often come home laden with packages.

Another Day at the Office: Adding Insult to Injury

In an earlier post, I described being assaulted-by-saliva by a boarding passenger who got angry that I told him the amount of the correct fare.

Today, they arrested him. How, you ask? The nitwit boarded my bus - at the same stop where the assault occurred, and at the same time of day no less.

This time he had a transfer with him, and headed to the back of the bus - either not recognizing me, or not caring. I called it in, and arranged to have transit police meet me at a stop ahead. There, after about 3 minutes wait (I told passengers that I was running early and needed to hold for time), police arrived, confirmed with me that this was the guy, removed him from the bus and made an arrest. They called in his ID as they detained him and I overheard what sounded like a lengthy record. I heard the phrase "felony assault" more than once.

My Reward

While most passengers - many of whom were present on the day that I was assaulted - were supportive, two chose to express different emotion at having their bus ride delayed. The first, a man asked why I was harassing a homeless person and delaying the bus. I told him that this man had assaulted me last week and I had to report it to get the guy off the street. The man then angrily said to me "so make an arrest and move on - why hold up the bus?" Apparently this guy thinks that bus drivers are magic cops.

The second - a scowly woman (artists rendition included at the beginning of this post) who regularly rides but never returns my "good morning's", waited as long as she could tolerate apparently. Stomping to the front door, she turned and said "You know what? YOU are responsible for what happened. You DESERVED it. I saw the whole thing and you are responsible because of the way you handled it!" She then stomped off.

At that point, I got on the PA, again apologized for the delay, and invited people to apply to become a bus driver and "live the dream".

I also wished that Adron Hall was there, because despite the delay - I still arrived at my terminal on-time.

MT HOOD COLLEGE TO GO ON STRIKE!

Mount Hood Community College Faculty Association has announced that they will strike this Thursday, May 12th, at 5 am. After a year of negotiations as well as sessions with a mediator, the Association voted on April 2nd to allow its leadership to call for a strike and set a date for a walk-out.  At issue are wages and retirees’ benefits. The college has threatened to hire full-time faculty replacements if there is a walk-out, and the student body is organizing a walkout during classes today to show their support for their instructors. If you are interested in showing solidarity with the Faculty Association, their strike will be at Mount Hood Community College, 26000 SE Stark Street in Gresham. Assemble at the main courtyard by flagpoles - the south side of the main campus building.

HR COMPLAINT DISMISSED-MR WALLACE FIXATION CONTINUES

I actually got a call from Lucy Shipley (very lovely woman to talk with BTW) telling me that Mr Wallace is not supposed to be in my letter and that a new version is being mailed out. Strange that nobody does any proofreading at Trimet?
No surprises in the letter of course, I had no expectations of anything changing.
They throw it back to the grievance process and say their rules are just wonderful and will continue to be enforced.

PARKER CASE UPDATE


Look at the bail amount for the various charges.
This is very interesting because what is obvious is that the actual "abuse" violations carry a bail of $2500, $2500, and $20,000, which is $25000 total, or $2500 to get out of that jail.

But then they added in the restraining order violations, which carry bail amounts of $50000, $50000, $50000, $50000, $50000, they are saying there were 5 instances of restraining order violations and each one should be charged separately.

The crime value is $25000, but the restraining order value is $250000, total $275000.

 Complete injustice in this bail as far as I am concerned.

SO HOW DID THE JIM STENGER CASE END?

According the court records he got 60 months probation and was shipped back to Hawaii.

The media landscape in our region has changed quite significantly with the advent of social media. Twitter, Facebook and the like have become important communication vehicles as people look to them for near real-time information delivery. TriMet is beginning to use these channels as a way to get good information into the hands of our riders and the general public about our services and projects. But with this new communications paradigm comes some significant challenges.
Because information can travel at a lightning pace in these electronic realms, misinformation can spread like wildfire doing more damage than good. This all makes it harder than ever for TriMet to get across service information, information about our projects, and in general – tell our communities the good work that TriMet does each and every day.
I need your help. The expansion of blogs, Twitter and other new media tools provides the opportunity to remind all TriMet employees that any comment made can become part of a news story. The traditional news media – TV, radio and print – monitor blogs and tweets, and may consider them to be truthful and accurate. Here’s how easy it is to become part of the media message:
 A rider overhears that bus service will be cut again, making it even harder for people to get to work. That rider blogs about it and now a TV station is calling TriMet to comment on the cuts.
At a TriMet open house, a blogger tweets out comments from a TriMet representative without any context or perspective, again, the media is calling. 
All of these examples demonstrate how simple it is to create media coverage based on someone’s opinion.
Any time a TriMet employee speaks about the agency, whether at an agency-sponsored open house, a neighborhood meeting, while in uniform or just by posting comments on blogs, Facebook or via Twitter, it can become part of a news story.
Even though a news reporter is not present, it does not mean that comments aren’t ‘on the record.’ An attendee to a neighborhood meeting can contact a news organization, and it’s now a story.
Guidelines
If you are contacted directly by a news reporter or a member of the news media, refer them to the Communications Department. Mary Fetsch or Bekki Witt will handle. Only designated TriMet personnel are allowed to talk to the news media. Mary or Bekki may contact you and ask you for information or in some instances, may have you talk directly to the reporters – but only under their direction.
Internet postings may not disclose any information that is confidential, safety-or-security sensitive or proprietary to TriMet.
If you have a blog or comment on one that discusses TriMet, you must make clear that you are speaking for yourself and not on behalf of the agency.
Media on our system
Additional guidelines apply to bus and rail operators. The news media is allowed to record, videotape and photograph while traveling on our system or at the scene of an incident.  However, they are not allowed to interfere with the safe operations of a vehicle or interview an operator on duty. If the media approaches an operations employee on duty, they must refer the media to the Communications Department.
TriMet believes in employees’ right to freedom of expression, online and elsewhere, and supports open dialogue and the exchange of ideas. At the same time, employees should exercise that freedom in a manner consistent with TriMet’s commitment to transparency, integrity and mutual respect.
Employees are personally responsible for the content they publish on the Internet, both internally and externally. Be mindful that what you publish will be public for a long time and can be used by others, so protect your privacy.   (For full guidelines: HR-202.1 Information Technology: Internet Use and Communications, and HR-304.2 News Media Guidelines. )
With all the chatter out there in the electronic world, we want to make sure that TriMet’s communications are heard clearly – to help accurately inform our riders and our communities.

You see, as teens, we are an undermined society. We are ignored often, and when people consider us, it's when they want to bitch about us or verbally crucify the whole generation as a whole. You often hear stories about how teens screwed up royally (I love how people bitch less about Charlie Sheen getting prostitutes, screwing his family up, doing drugs and drinking and being in total madness and denial about it than they do about so and so teen personality getting pregnant by accident.) We are categorized entirely as a generation who doesn't give a tenpenny fuck about tomorrow, their family or others; just getting drunk, high and pregnant. Guys are douchebags and girls are whores. It may not be that 'out there' blatant as that but media is pretty much subtly doing that with shows on The CW where 20 somethings play slutty teens partying. And if I see one more commercial where the teenager does nothing but smart off behind a phone, I'm going to break my TV with an axe. I'm sorry if this offends you, but this is me being perfectly frank about it.

For liberals to examine the current fundamentalist phenomenon in America is accept some hard truths. For starters, we libs are even more embattled than most of us choose to believe. Any significant liberal and progressive support is limited to a few urban pockets on each coast and along the upper edge of the Midwestern tier states. Most of the rest of the nation, the much vaunted heartland, is the dominion of the conservative and charismatic Christian. Turf-wise, it's pretty much their country, which is to say it presently belongs to George W. Bush for some valid reasons. Remember: He did not have to steal the entire election, just a little piece of it in Florida. Evangelical born-again Christians of one stripe or another were then, and are now, 40% of the electorate, and they support Bush 3-1. And as long as their clergy and their worst instincts tell them to, they will keep on voting for him, or someone like him, regardless of what we view as his arrogant folly and sub-intelligence. Forget about changing their minds. These Christians do not read the same books we do, they do not get their information from anything remotely resembling reasonably balanced sources, and in fact, consider even CBS and NBC super-liberal networks of porn and the Devil's lies. Given how fundamentalists see the modern world, they may as well be living in Iraq or Syria, with whom they share approximately the same Bronze Age religious tenets. They believe in God, Rumsfeld's Holy War and their absolute duty as God's chosen nation to kick Muslim ass up one side and down the other. In other words, just because millions of Christians appear to be dangerously nuts does not mean they are marginal.
