Mayor Ed Lee said today that he hopes to achieve something that has eluded the two mayors before him: Get Muni to substantially improve its on-time performance.
The mayor said he wants Muni to demonstrate ''real measurable improvements ... specifically getting Muni's on-time performance up to the voter-mandated 85 percent.''
It was 12 years ago that San Francisco voters, fed up with chronic reliability problems plaguing the city-run transit system, came up with the on-time rate.
Portland's Mayor's response: "Fuck the bus riders. If they aren't wealthy enough or special enough to live near the Streetcar, that's their problem."
"First they ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win." ~Mahatma Gandhi

TriMet president: Board members shape policy by email
TriMet has seven volunteer board members,
all appointed by the state’s governor. They’re the only people at
TriMet whose job it is to represent the public interest. In the last
year of covering the agency, six of them have agreed with each other on,
as far as I can recall, every single vote.
Are they six rubber stamps?
The board’s chair, TriMet President Rick Van Beveren, says they have a big influence on the agency – but not during meetings.

Wall Street's Role in Narco-Trafficking
Imagine what your reaction would be if the Mexican government agreed to pay Barack Obama $1.4 billion to deploy US troops and armored vehicles to New York, Los Angeles and Chicago to conduct military operations, set up check points, and engage in fire-fights that end up killing 35,000 US civilians on the streets of American cities.
If the Mexican government treated the United States like this, would you consider them a friend or an enemy?

GREEKS KEEP FIGHTING THE FINANCIAL TERRORISTS
Greece’s ports, banks, hospitals and state-run companies grind to a halt today as the two biggest labor unions strike to oppose Prime Minister George Papandreou’s additional budget cuts and asset sales.
ADEDY, the largest public-sector union, and the General Confederation of Labor, or GSEE, the biggest private-sector union, called the third general strike of the year to protest the government’s five-year fiscal plan and program of state asset sales, according to e-mailed statements.

GREECE COMES TO NY
New Yorkers are escalating protests against austerity measures contained in Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s latest budget. In a major protest Tuesday, thousands of New York City union members rallied at City Hall demanding an end to layoffs and cuts to social spending. WISCONSIN REPUBLICAN COURT SAYS YES TO STRIPPING RIGHTS (no surprise here of course)
A divided Wisconsin Supreme Court has reinstated Gov. Scott Walker’s union-busting law curbing collective bargaining. In a 4-to-3 ruling, the court overturned a lower court’s ruling that Republican legislators failed to provide sufficient public notice before passing the measure in March. The law sharply curbs nearly all collective bargaining rights of state employees. In its new decision, the court ruled the lower court judge, Dane County Circuit Judge Maryann Sumi, had overstepped her authority. Thousands of protesters returned to the State Capitol in Madison on Tuesday as the full legislature began debating Walker’s budget.
