Customer Service is a Priority at TriMet
TriMet provides a critical service in a diverse operating environment. Every day you interact with people from diverse backgrounds. This includes riders with limited English proficiency, the elderly, persons with disabilities and youth. Some customers will require additional time, effort, assistance and patience. TriMet expects operators to be polite and courteous to all customers and to respond to questions and challenging situations in a polite, respectful way.

Tyranny at Trimet-my fight for civil rights as a Trimet employee

Those that have been following this blog over the years know that I have been in a fight with Trimet management for my rights as a citizen of Oregon and the United States of America.

Trimet management asserts they have the right to regulate my off duty behavior, in my house, using completely legal apparatus, to listen to and re-publish over the air wave communications of transit operations.
They contend that I violate their internal rules which require me to seek 'permission' to record any employees voice or picture, on or off duty, over the public airwaves or at any public meeting.

'Occupy Wall Street' plans Portland rally without permit

Occupy Wall Street demonstrations that began in New York two weeks ago are spreading to Oregon, with disruptions likely in downtown Portland on Thursday.
Occupy Portland plans a protest Thursday at Waterfront Park that will then march along a route not yet disclosed to downtown Portland. The Portland Police Bureau announced Wednesday morning that the group declined to obtain a permit for a march.
Occupy Portland faxed police, stating: "For best impact, we will march in the streets and disrupt the city," according to the Portland Police Bureau.
The group will meet at Waterfront Park near the Burnside Bridge at noon on Thursday, and then march to undisclosed locations in the city.
Bureau spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson cautioned downtown businesses to be aware of protesters, and that the event will disrupt mass transit and slow down both vehicle and foot traffic.
"The Portland Police Bureau is committed to vigorously pursuing the goal of allowing participants to express their view which is there free speech right," he said, "Our overall objective is to take all appropriate action to help make this event happen in a way that is safe for participants and the general public alike." More: Read PPB release
The occupation protest is based on the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations, now in their third week, which have spurred other similar demonstrations in major cities like Boston and Los Angeles, all to protest corporate greed.

Larry Hanley Occupies Wall Street on 'Ed Show' (MSNBC), Approximately 10:20 PM EDT Tonight

International President Larry Hanley will appear on the ‘Ed Show,’ at 10:20 PM EDT, tonight on the cable news channel, MSNBC.
Hanley will be discussing the ATU’s support for the “Occupy Wall Street” demonstrations in New York and all around the country.
ATU members participated in the Occupy Wall Street March today in New York City.  Hanley pledged ATU’s support for the movement saying, “The ATU applauds the Occupy Wall Street activists for their courage and strength to expose the greed and corruption on Wall Street as the rest of America struggles to survive. These young people are speaking for the vast majority of Americans who are frustrated by the bankers and brokers who have profited on the backs of hard working people.”
““While we battle it out day after day, month after month, the millionaires and billionaires on Wall Street sit idly by – untouched – and lecture us on the level of our sacrifice.” he continued.  "Working Americans have sacrificed too much already. Transit riders have paid with record fare increases and service cuts.  How dare they demand that we coddle the rich while poor people are losing their benefits and millions are becoming poor?”
Hanley urges all members to participate in “Occupy” demonstrations taking place in their area.

Veteran operator ""Rolf"" shows no sympathy for baby bus driver

Dan Christensen comments on the baby bus incident

1. It is not abuse of anyone if they get off the bus. Unless it puts them in danger, bad weather, or the last bus and you strand them. Waiting for the next bus is not... NOT abuse. those who think so have to do a priority check.
2. If the child is distracting the driver with crying.. then the child is distracting the driver.. just like a cell phone or a kindle. Distraction is distraction. A bus has to roll safe.

Portland motel room burglary led to car left on tracks, smacked by light rail train

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland police say a 1999 Subaru Legacy ended up abandoned on light rail tracks where it was hit by a MAX train after a motel room burglary in which the vehicle's owners lost their car keys as well as other items.
No one was in the car when it was hit early Tuesday. TriMet spokeswoman Bekki Witt tells The Oregonian that the operator and four students using the eastbound train for training were unhurt.
Lt. Robert King says the victims woke up at a Travelodge to find several items missing from their room and called police Tuesday morning to report the burglary. Detectives recovered video surveillance from the burglary and were able to identify the suspects coming from and going to a different room at the motel. Police made three arrests Tuesday evening.

The Joke's On Us

The whole baby incident is a symptom of a larger Trimet structural problem

ATU 757 President Jon Hunt stands behind the driver in the baby case

Strange twist in the driver vs baby case

It turns out that TRIMET management has been aware of this operators difficulties in dealing with passengers for some time now and had agreed that when she ran into problems they would immediately come to her assistance.

Apparently that assistance was not around when needed the most . There is much more to this story than what is currently available .

Management had been working with her in dealing with the difficult people and situations that occur during our workday.

This comes from Jeff Ackerson, Merlo union representative, who is currently on vacation.

It also needs to be said that this operator has an excellent record of safe operation of the bus.

A bus operator has to have a variety of qualities, but if you want to rank in them in terms of importance, being able to handle the vehicle safely is the most important.

While this whole event has been sensationalized beyond it's actual importance and damage done, once the hysteria clears, people might be able to realize that this entire event was indeed the product of an overworked and over stressed operator, a screaming child and a mob of angry passengers, which all together created a sensational media event, but in reality it was a non event.

Nobody got hurt, the woman got home, apparently picked up by her husband and the irate passengers all boarded the next bus.

Remember Marshall McLuhan,THE MEDIA IS THE MESSAGE, and that has been made completely clear in this case.

Interesting isn't it?

That the 'victim' in this non-event has not bothered to call Trimet with any sort of complaint.
Obviously she must have seen it on one of the news channels or in the paper.
So why isn't she complaining about this "horrible" driver?
My thought, because maybe she realizes that this was a bad situation and not 100% the drivers fault?

And here is one voice of reason amongst the crowd of hysterics, this is posted by one of the riders on that bus to the KATU website:

It has been brought to my attention that a student in one of these 're-certification' classes has taken offense to being presented with a retirement form as an option to doing what was being taught in that class.

Apparently the instructor created "a hostile and abusive" workplace by threatening peoples employment if they did not do what they were told.

I've heard about this tactic,  although I did not experience this during my training class however.

I thought my instructors were very professional and very informative.

Jenny Hansson from KOIN writes:

Thanks for your response, Al. Although, the passenger we spoke with said the woman was told to get off… not that she left on her own free will.

Your blog is entertaining. Just so you know, we did not board any buses or attempt to talk with any drivers. Not sure who did that---but wasn’t KOIN.

This was my response to her inquiry:
I left you a voice message, I have nothing to really say about this other than the operator screwed up, obviously under intense pressure.

I don't understand why this is news? Nobody got hurt, and the transcript shows the woman with the baby left the bus on her own free will, she was not kicked off.

You can read my comments on my blog regarding this, I have several posts regarding the situation, I DO NOT SPEAK AS A TRIMET BUS DRIVER but as a blogger who happens to be a transit bus driver.

Good Transit Is Ugly Transit

Spending a lot of money on flashy stations is also not something that Spain, the world leader in cheap and efficient tunneling projects, recommends. In a report on railway expansion in Madrid, tunneling expert Manuel Melis Maynar writes: “Design should be focused on the needs of the users, rather than on architectural beauty or exotic materials, and never on the name of the architect.” And it makes sense – the point of transit is to transport. Money buys movement, and funds are finite. When a system is running well, people aren’t sticking around to stare at the ceiling, anyway.

It appears that there are media outlets are out in the field trying to board buses and talk to operators!

The following is a pictorial representation of our beloved media:

What a difference a few weeks makes

It also appears from the transcript that the driver DID NOT actually kick that mother off the bus, she left on her own accord.
As usual the media seems to be ignoring the reality of the situation.

Furthermore, I would not recommend reading the comments on the various sites covering these stories. A real testimony to the complete and utter stupidity of the general population.

It appears that we are in the midst of another media feeding frenzy.

The dispatcher informed the driver of the 'baby bus' that "she had to continue driving the bus" and there "was nothing we can do about it".

Obviously we do not have to do anything. Remember, safety is a value at TRIMET, and if the driver felt that continuing in route would jeopardize safety, then they should not continue to operate the bus.

The correct response from dispatch would have been, "if you feel unsafe driving the bus please park the bus until a supervisor gets there."

This dispatcher is not one of my favorites BTW.

What really happened with the baby incident

I reviewed the dispatch call on this incident.
It appears to me that this driver just had reached her limit and "broke" which is something that happens periodically around here. This is a very hard job and the public has no sympathy at all for what we really have to put up with.
The driver did wrong in the incident, she should have never removed the mother and baby from the bus but when you "break" well, bus drivers are people too.
The following is the transcription of the call between the bus driver and dispatcher. The actual recording will not be released by me or anybody that I know at this time:

Woman alleges driver kicked mother, baby off TriMet bus -

It should be noted that this driver was extremely distracted and probably was unable to operate the bus safely. Unfortunately, the proper thing would have been to call for a supervisor, not just kick the woman and baby off.

Torturing bus drivers and riders for no particular reason

We are all aware that Trimet runs limited bus service on Sunday, which means of course they have plenty of low floor buses not in use.
Why in the world do they insist on assigning high floor buses to busy routes such as the 57 when that complicates life for drivers and passengers who have problems getting up the stairs?
Is it indifference or stupidity of not knowing what's going on out here?
No matter what the reason, it illustrates the gross incompetence of Trimet management.

Are we on the cusp of major change?

Choose. But choose fast. The state and corporate forces are determined to crush this. They are not going to wait for you. They are terrified this will spread. They have their long phalanxes of police on motorcycles, their rows of white paddy wagons, their foot soldiers hunting for you on the streets with pepper spray and orange plastic nets. They have their metal barricades set up on every single street leading into the New York financial district, where the mandarins in Brooks Brothers suits use your money, money they stole from you, to gamble and speculate and gorge themselves while one in four children outside those barricades depend on food stamps to eat. Speculation in the 17th century was a crime. Speculators were hanged. Today they run the state and the financial markets.
The only word these corporations know is more. They are disemboweling every last social service program funded by the taxpayers, from education to Social Security, because they want that money themselves. Let the sick die. Let the poor go hungry. Let families be tossed in the street. Let the unemployed rot. Let children in the inner city or rural wastelands learn nothing and live in misery and fear. Let the students finish school with no jobs and no prospects of jobs. Let the prison system, the largest in the industrial world, expand to swallow up all potential dissenters. Let torture continue.

Trial Attorney comments on Trimet

We’re #1 … not

September 23rd, 2011
This is kind of a funny story. We often find fault with TriMet, our local transit authority, but apparently TriMet thinks very highly of itself. When a U.S. News & World Report article rated Portland as “the nation’s best city for public transportation,” TriMet interpreted that to mean the agency was the nation’s top transit agency and took the ball running. TriMet spent some $8,000 on signs for its buses and trains that proclaimed “#1 Transit.”
Unfortunately for TriMet, U.S. News & World Report changed its mind, or rather, a correction noted that the original article had been incorrect, and just like that Portland dropped from #1 for public transportation to #5.TriMet plans to take down all 168 signs.

Transit poll: Should TriMet extend transfer times to 3 hours?

A step backward for TriMet

"It’s about fairness and equity,” Fetsch said. According to her, one inspector claims that, overall, people are “ecstatic” about the enforcement and that riders will be paying their fair share. She compares transit riders who “take a chance on beating the system or getting a ticket” to vehicle drivers who use street parking without paying the meters.

But typical parking tickets are $34 for overtime parking and $60 for exceeding two hours in a permitted area. Are transit freeloaders so much more heinous than parking “squatters” that they need to pay $175?

It's easy for transit agencies to be caught up in the dreaded death spiral; but reversing such spirals and driving demand often requires investments to be made. It should be equally willing, and not so quick to plead poverty, to keep the core of its customer base happy--and to treat them like customers instead of like hostages.

Wanna be a union activist?

Trimet under review-by Neil Macfarlane

Every three years, the Federal Transit Administration conducts a review -- making sure we are following the rules, regulations and guidance that we agree to when we accept federal funding. The review looks at a wide variety of TriMet business functions, from preventative maintenance, to procurement. The reviewers include staff from FTA region 10, as well as a team of contractors hired to do this special work. A great deal of the work is done prior to the actual review visit -- and we have some champions in the Finance Division, and helpers throughout the agency who did an A+ job on the pre-work. I mention this because it lets me share my philosophy about this -- my hope is that we are 'A' students when it comes to following these rules and regulations. We ask a lot of our federal partners, and we receive a lot in federal funds. Paying close attention to the regulations shows our respect for that, but it also builds trust with the federal government, so that they KNOW an investment in TriMet programs will be well spent. Now, I know the regs are complex, and sometimes honest misunderstandings occur, but still -- my expectation is 'A' student status overall -- and a reputation with FTA as the well-run, hardworking transit agency that we are. thanks and Best Regards Neil

The sudden appearance of yet another "dumb bus driver" story on the mainstream media has many of us wondering about the motives behind it.

As one of my colleagues pointed out, there has been none of this type of story appearing in the media for some time now. Remember the last flurry of these "dumb bus driver" media events occurred during the contract negotiations.

The stories stopped appearing after the implementation of the Macfarlanes health care plan and the upcoming arbitration.

After TRIMET management loses it's unfair labor practice and loses the #1 rating there just happens to appear yet another story on the mainstream media about a dumb bus driver.

You don't have to be a logistics professor to notice the connection here. Especially since a bus driver on a cell phone is NOT NEWS, its just another dumb bus driver on the road, who cares?

It's becoming very clear that these stories are coming from TRIMET management themselves, will full cooperation of the corporate media, either to humiliate the drivers or distract the public from management misdeeds.

Remember Marshall McLuhan "The medium is the message".

A dumb bus driver is not news. A dumb bus driver getting into a serious accident is news. There is no news here.

The corruption of Portland transit: How did things go so wrong?

As a young environmental activist growing up in north Jersey in the 1960s, I took transit buses all over – into Newark, Elizabeth, and New York City. Later as a college student in Pittsburgh, I took Greyhound across the state many times to get home.

The wonders of Light Rail-you can't move it.....EVER!

Due to police activity, no Blue or Red MAX trains are operating on SW Yamhill between 15th and 18th. Shuttle buses are replacing MAX service between SW Galleria/Library and Goose Hollow/SW Jefferson stations. Some Yellow Line trains are operating on the Red/Blue alignment through downtown but only traveling as far west as Galleria/Library stations. Riders should expect delays.

Say goodbye, forever

How much hypocrisy are we expected to endure?

I'm really having a hard time right now feeling good about my job here.
I know the honcho's would be happy to see all us old timers out the door. They could replace all of us with new hires, with no vacation time, lower pay scales, and less retirement benefits, and that is what they really want apparently.

Last week I was subjected to two instances where management failure has jeopardized mine and my passengers safety. One day I had to drive a round trip with no signals or emergency flashers and the next day I lost my steering while doing down highway 26.

I suggest you folks that call yourselves managers stop talking about safety till you get our equipment up to standards that can qualify as safe.

Last week I was also subjected to a management "lecture" because I didn't make two attempts to call dispatch after having already sent them a 'ready for service' message that they did not answer. While they failed, I get lectures, its the usual bullshit abuse we operators take while in the employ of TRIMET.

I Ride

On some lucky mornings we stop on the bridge. Suspended there above the river, our view is exclusive to transit commuters and to the legions of cyclists who now pass us in our moment of stasis. I wonder some days whether our train operator is just exercising his prerogative, remembering the days of childhood when piloting a train over a bridge and then sweeping into a bustling city must have sounded like the best job in the world. As the train starts to descend into Old Town, I hope my operator is still finding some joy in his job. I hope that amidst all the schedule pressures and time-points he gets just a moment to realize that he’s the one who got to grow up and drive a train.

Life will never be the same on Lincoln St

According to TriMet, the removed trees will be reused in a variety of ways. Higher-quality wood will be salvaged and provided to furniture and structure builders, such as Habitat for Humanity. Large sections of trees will be reused as playground furniture for City of Portland parks. The remaining wood will be made into firewood for low-income households, or mulched for use in local parks and community gardens.
