TriMet phasing out 'non-foil' old-style fare tickets

TRIMET TRANSIT DISTRICT CONTINUES USING ITS BULLY PULPIT

In their new posting about the budget problems, we see a very obvious attempt to sway public opinion.
Is it actually legal for a non profit governmental agency to preach a point of view to the public?
More abuse of authority from our "managers". 
It's obvious to me that this company has been actively engaging in a all out public relations war on its employees, blowing up the bad employees into a public spectacle, and propagandizing  using its multi million dollar tax payer funded marketing department.
It's despicable.


Because of a 2007 change in the law, we cannot unilaterally implement our final offer to the union. Instead we must engage in all-or-nothing interest arbitration, a forum in which it is extremely difficult to make significant changes no matter how out-of-line union wages and benefits are.

The more I watch and listen to Steve Clark, the more I am impressed with his point of view. At first I thought he was just running interference for the paradigm, but I am beginning to change my mind. I am not the only person to notice his independent agenda.

What's wrong with Tiffany Sweitzer?

For the last four meetings she has left the meetings as soon as the public testimony begins. We are sure she is a very busy woman, but never hanging around to hear the public comments shows a complete lack of empathy for the transit riding population. If she feels she is too busy to actually attend the meetings to the end then maybe she should resign or be replaced.

I am concerned about what I am hearing from our general manager and what I
see on the job as an employee.

For months now Mr. McFarlane has been talking about how much his safety
Initiative is improving the operating conditions at TriMet; about changing
our culture and making safety a value, and not a word.

What's with the fareboxes and why won't they just get new ones

Dear Al, Tri-Met has just recently refurbished the ominous fareboxes, much to the demise of the drivers....they are malfunctioning at a galatic rate !!! This has added no end of frustration to the drivers' already list of problematic elements to juggle,(not to mention the miscalculations that are occurring with the auditing dept) . I am speaking from center street experience, and do not know if Powell and Merlo were involved in last weekends' installation of refurbished machines. There seems to be a more than 50% failure in the machines in question...Who is the contractor, and why the Hell didn't Tri-Met just opt for the full replacement of all Fareboxes ?

She sat through the meeting not saying anything; just waiting until she could get a word in edgewise.

Latest ridership figures out

Bus ridership is up significantly,the biggest increase of all the modes of transport at TriMet.
However, no where in the body of the press release statement does this get mentioned.
As usual they trumpet their beloved rail services, bragging away about the puny WES ridership.
I'm tired of going through the figures every month to show just what baloney they really are but you can see them yourself:

Yesterday was one of the few times a year that the Vintage Trolley was running. In other words, if you want to ride it, do it next Sunday because after that it won't run until one day in May, one day in July and then one day in September before the Christmas season begins again. TRIMET targeting my associates?

An operator that I know pretty well is convinced that his association with me and any appearance he has on my web site leads to direct retaliation from the company.
He comes to this conclusion due to his two recent appearances and then the next day SIP's appear in his company mail.
Cause and effect?
After the first incident I considered the guy paranoid, but after the second incident, I am beginning to wonder.
Of course like most operators he is scared of losing his employment, they surely have us all thinking like slaves, you loose this job and its under the Burnside Bridge with ya!

Violence now 'occupational safety hazard' for bus drivers

"Driving a bus has become an occupational safety hazard, and it shouldn't be," said Clarke in the wake of recent incidents involving attacks on MCTS bus drivers.
"If you look at our airlines, you can't get to the pilot anymore. They protect the pilot. If you look at our subway systems, the drivers' (doors) are closed. You can't get to the driver. I've talked about that. I've talked about giving them defensive weapons, and it's all been pooh-poohed by the transit administration," said Clarke.

How many service disruptions have we had this week? This is unbelievable!

Due to an incident involving a MAX train and auto at NE Holladay and Grand, MAX Blue, Green and Red Line trains are disrupted. Shuttle buses will transport riders between Rose Quarter and Lloyd Center stations. Riders should expect delays.

Lake Oswego citizens repeatedly are saying ‘no’ to streetcar

Citizen testimony at public hearings ran two to one against streetcar. Email correspondence to council ran approximately three to one against streetcar. The Citizen Budget Committee voted to eliminate any streetcar/Foothills funding. Now, a professional survey of Lake Oswego citizens identified that 82 percent of the citizens think other things are more important than Streetcar. This should be more than adequate information for the mayor and his majority on the council to listen to the citizens and understand that Lake Oswego does not want this streetcar.

Allen Morgan, TriMet’s manager of operations and training, sent me an explanation of what’s at play when a driver has to take evasive action to avoid hitting a bicyclist blowing a stop sign.“Stopping distance has three variables – the time taken to recognize the hazard + reaction time+ braking distance. We also have to take into account speed and road conditions.”

  • A headline over at the Rantings of a Transit Bus Driver blog: “DRIVER PASSES OUT DUE TO EXHUAST FUMES.” Sounds alarming. Blogger and bus driver Al Margulies reports: “An operator passed out due to a ‘sulfur smell.’” Well, yes and no, says TriMet. Here’s the email reply that spokeswoman Mary Fetsch sent in: “The operator was Cliff McGrady (note correct spelling). Riders told the operator of the smell. The operator said he did not smell the sulfur that was caused from overheating batteries. Passengers were off loaded onto another bus. The operator, with maintenance following, drove the bus back to the Merlo garage. He collapsed just outside the report area. Our safety staff believe the operator's collapse is unrelated to the sulfur smell.”

What kind of people apply to be a bus operator

This is from Puget Sound Operators blog, Jeff Welch, and it goes a long way in explaining why some of the people that end up working here are not exactly fit for the job:

but also because of the obvious lack of selling points: new part-time Operators are guaranteed no more than 2.5 hours per day (less than 13 hours per week), with no security regarding advancement, increases in hours, availability of desired schedule, etc. As one base chief once said to me – “What kind of profession attracts desperate people? Only desperate people would apply for the kind of job with this kind of working conditions, at least initially.” He was right. I was desperate.

We start at 12 an hour.You have to be desperate to start at 360 dollars a week at TriMet.

Bus didn't show up? Here's one possibility why..........

Due to a commercial power outage, MAX signals and switches are affected through the Rose Quarter and Union Station. Blue and Red Lines are on regular routes but are experiencing delays. Green and Yellow Line trains are looping on 5th and 6th avenues downtown and not crossing the Steel Bridge. On the eastside, Yellow Line trains are traveling between Expo Center and Rose Quarter and then east as a Green Line train to Clackamas Town Center. Shuttle buses are also transporting people from Rose Quarter to 5th and Glisan. Riders should expect delays.

Since this agency has two distinct operator functions one of which is clearly more difficult than the other Trimet should offer differential pay for the operators doing the more difficult work.


Driver that are forced to use old equipment and have the extra distracting burden of calling stops in addition to everything else that this position requires should receive additional monetary compensation.


This company has no problem finding $390,000 to hire spies to see if we who are driving the old antique equipment are calling the stops, but the company doesn't have the smarts to realize that for the same amount of money they could have equipped all the buses with automated technology.


Trimet calls itself a leader in technology, unfortunately for the transit division the technology has very little to do with operating a bus.

Witnessing the debacle of the WILLOW CREEK ART SUPPLIES CATASTROPHE of yesterday, it is obvious how pathetically unprepared and unmanageable this organization has become, god help us if there is ever a real emergency.

Driver stopped before the stop due to traffic. Then bitched at passenger for not walking up to him from actual stop.
To which our lovely pencil neck geeks sitting behind desks pretending they are important responded:
TriMet's reply: "Please report the operator of 5468 to Customer Service. Our operators are not supposed to encourage passengers to enter traffic.
Enter traffic? WTF? I think I know what the complainer was talking about, where the bus stops a few car lengths before the stop (like at a traffic light) because there are cars in the way waiting at the light, & so the driver waves the passengers forward to board so they don't have to stop twice. Which I think makes sense if the passengers are able to walk to the bus (I could see that not working if there's someone in a wheelchair, for example). But how did that get spun into the driver asking people to enter traffic?!

Each year TriMet’s Creative Services staff participates in a team building session to celebrate and support the concepts of usabililty. This year they competed in the Computer-Human Interaction Forum of Oregon (CHIFOO)’s 2011 Usability Hunt.  It’s part of World Usability Day that was founded in 2005 as an initiative of the Usability Professionals’ Association to ensure that services and products important to human life are easier to access and simpler to use. Each year, on the second Thursday of November, over 200 events are organized in over 43 countries around the world to raise awareness for the general public, and train professionals in the tools and issues central to good usability research, development and practice. TriMet had two team entries (TriMetUXers and TMCreates) in the local CHIFOO’s contest and team TriMetUXers took first place with 34 out of 38 points. See the results and read more here.

What do TRIMET managers actually do?

Portland, Ore.-based TriMet says it has selected CH2M Hill provide on-call construction management services for the Portland to Milwaukie light rail transit extension project. The 7.3-mile, $1.4 billion project will connect Portland State University in downtown Portland with southeast Portland, Milwaukie, and north Clackamas County.
