NY'S MTA WANTS HUGE CONCESSIONS-UNION LEADERS SELL OUT

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) formally presented its concessions demands this week, only days before the contract deadline for some 35,000 bus and subway workers in New York City.

The transit agency is insisting on a three-year wage freeze along with a host of other major concessions. The givebacks include the elimination of the guaranteed 40-hour work week, with the introduction of part-time bus operators. A proposal to approximately double the amount workers pay for their health care coverage would be the equivalent of a huge pay cut.

ATU 757 VICE PRESIDENT

MACFARLANE BRAGS ABOUT THE 80/20 HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN THAT MANAGMENT HAS

Macfarlane always seems to forget that most of the managers make far more money than most operators, and all the office people work in a controlled environment, basically nine-five. Operators are working all kinds of unhealthy work shifts covering all hours of the day, are exposed to toxins being emitted by the Trimet equipment, and exposed to all sorts of illnesses by being in such close contact with the public at large. In other words, our jobs kill us!
Macfarlane is comparing apples and oranges, people should not be fooled by his rhetoric.

I'd also like people to be aware that all the non union employees are vested after 5 years on the job. Union employees are vested after 10 years. How is that fair?

Macfarlane also likes to brag that he hasn't had pay raise in 4 years! Bus operators haven't had a pay raise in 28 years. The only reason our wages have risen at all is due to cost of living index. We are also now saddled with paying a % of our health care premium...

DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE OF MACFARLANE

PORTLAND TRIBUNE HERE!

ROME MAY BE BURNING BUT THATS NO REASON TO STOP THE PARTY

We were pleased to host FTA Administrator Peter Rogoff here in Portland over the last two days.  He was here to kick-off and attend the first ‘Streetcar Roundtable’ – we co-hosted the event with the City of Portland. It drew 55 city, transit district, and federal officials to share best practices in streetcar development.

One of the highlights was a tour and ‘opening’ celebration for the reconstruction of Moody Street in South Waterfront.  Construction cranes and hard hats were evidence of the rapid change that District will see. The Oregon university system is developing a 265,000 square foot ‘collaborative life sciences building’ right at the future intersection of the Portland to Milwaukie light rail line, streetcar, our north south buses (now the 35 and 36), and our future bus lines using the PMLR bridge (9,17, 19).  The cranes supporting the construction of the bridge was part of the scene.   The new Moody is the kind of ‘complete’ street we’ll see more of in the region’s future.  It includes a cycle track, pedestrian way, streetcar, and auto lanes. Nice design – and good for transit.

In meeting with the Administrator, we reviewed the status of the PMLR project, CRC, and our growing ridership. He told me personally what he later said at the Moody Street event regarding the PMLR – “ …the money is on its way." Message couldn’t get better than that.

I want to offer special thanks to the community relations team, particularly the staff in Ann Becklund’s department (but others as well), for the great effort in co-hosting the roundtable.   Their efforts made us look good once again to a national audience – and key stakeholders and funders.
Great job all!

Lake Oswego plan rightly derailed

$3.70! WAS IT WORTH IT?

Trimet's latest humiliation happened yesterday on bus 71. Two fare evaders were asked to leave the bus over two bad transfers The incident escalated out of control and now we have two people in jail (at the cost of much more than $3.70), several people emotionally scarred, and another incident where Trimet looks to be the most dangerous place to be in Portland.

When will the bus drivers learn to PUSH THE FARE EVASION BUTTON and let the evaders ride for crying out loud!

It's not worth the trouble, there are uniformed personnel that handle fare evasions. The bus drivers job is to drive the bus and NOTIFY DISPATCH in case of fare evasion.

Macfarlane's absurdity

TriMet's sparsely attended Twitter town hall; transit study; Oregon's windshield obsession; and bus crash video: Commuting roundup | OregonLive.com

TriMet promoted Thursday night’s virtual Tw-on hall with General Manager Neil McFarlane as if it were the agency's moon-launch moment on Twitter. I’m not sure the event managed to leave the Portland skyline.

McFarlane started the 6 p.m. #askneil Q&A conversation in bursts of 140-character-or-less messages with one simple rule: “We have one hour, so I’ll try to answer as many questions (one question per tweeter) as I can before 7 p.m.”

Of course, that one-question-per-tweeter rule stalled out as soon as McFarlane realized TriMet riders weren’t exactly clamoring to drill him on budget issues in the middle of the evening rush hour.

The GM wound up answering (or, in some cases, not answering) multiple questions from the same handful of tweeters. There seemed to be just as many transit haters as riders hurling tweets.

For the most part, the queries stuck to trying to make sense of how TriMet is once again running on red ink even as ridership grows. Among other things, McFarlane hinted at the agency working on options to pay fares electronically and making money by selling ads on its website.

But many comments and questions strayed into the misinformed, conspiratorial, union-bashing and wildly hyperbolic (“ChargerJeff” claimed 80 percent of Clackamas residents oppose light rail, before changing that figure to 71 percent and eventually dropping the issue altogether).

In the end, McFarlane signed off with: “You can provide your feedback in person, if you prefer. We’re holding open houses in February. #askneil"
Fortunately, the MAX FAQ’s blog archived the entire conversion.

STEVE FUNG'S MOVIE OF THE WEEK

Mary Fetsch babbles away on Joe Rose Article...AND...

We caught the Oregonian changing its WES picture from one lonely rider to a picture with multiple riders? Now why would they do that?

“It’s a safe environment where you can be texting or be on the phone or reading a book without the stress of being behind the wheel,” said spokeswoman Mary Fetsch. “People just may be enjoying taking transit more these days.” (ya right Mary, people just love riding transit sooo much cause its so great to be packed in like a sardine during rush hour, and they love missing their connection to a bus that runs once an hour because of some incident on the MAX line.)
Original picture in Oregonian article

Now go read the article and look at the picture HERE!

TRIMET RIDERSHIP UP!

1,060,900 trips on the bus which is 58% of ridership!
749,800 trips on the MAX which is 41% of ridership!
43,900 trips on the Green line which is 2.45% or ridership! (although we don't know how many boarded where lines overlap)
7,250 trips on WES which is .04% of ridership (Trimet claims 22.9% increase)
Note: WES actually is falling;  WES ridership in November - 8000/week.  WES ridership in December - 7250/week.

Max Campos calculations:

You're calculating the weekly green line ridership by adding weekday (21,700) + weekend (24,200) to get a total of 45,900. If I followed that method for calculating total ridership for the entire system then you'd add weekday (301,650) + weekend (309,700) = 611,350! We know that the correct figure is 1,870,950, however.

It looks like TriMet's stats show "weekday" as meaning *1* weekday. "weekend" means Sat + Sun. To calculate total ridership:
301,650 * 5 + 309,700 = 1,817,950 (that's correct)

So Green line ridership is:
21,700 * 5 + 24,200 = 132,700 (7.3%)

-------
WES:
7,250 / 1,870,950 = .003875, which (moving the decimal 2 places) is .3875%, rounded to .4%.

max-train-bikejpg-08a731a989284aac.jpgView full sizeGot Twitter? TriMet will use the social media service to take questions about its budget woes this Thursday.
Ten months ago, TriMet officials, who in many ways are still trying to figure out how to use that radical 1989 technology known as the pager, treated this Twitter thing as if it were something that just might steal their souls in 140 characters or less.

To a lot of riders, the TriMet social media team's tipidness stirred up images of monkey men dancing around the singing black monolith from outer space in “2001: A Space Odyssey.” For millenials, here’s your YouTube reference.

My, how things have evolved. Facing a shortfall of up to $17 million (translation: more service cuts for riders are a-comin’), Oregon’s largest has announced an honest-to-hashtag budget tweeting, er, meeting featuring General Manager Neil McFarlane. Of course, you wouldn’t know it from the agency’s website, where’s there’s no mention of it on the home page (sigh).

Here’s the skinny: At 6 p.m. Thursday, McFarlane will be hosting “a live town-hall-style chat on Twitter, to help answer your questions about TriMet’s budget issues and how they might affect you.” The hashtag: #askneil.

Generally speaking, the meeting was conducted in the usual style of union meetings, mayhem ruled the day. Here are the highlights:

Nobody surprised with outcome

Including myself!
However it was surprising how many voted for Jon.
We all knew that 75% would never be possible.
In an ironic twist I could have won $50 but couldn't find my ticket in time.
After I showed Jon The winning ticket he said "you can frame it or put it back in the coffee can".
I put it back in the coffee can.

JON HUNT RE-CALL VOTE TODAY AT 3 PM/POWELL AND 32ND MECHANICS HALL

The executive board will be voting against this recall, that's not a surprise.
I am voting yes on the recall and here is why:

1-The failure of our union leadership in its dealings with TRIMET in our contract negotiations.
2-The failure of our union leadership in advocating against the unjust disciplines that are being handed out by the ruthless, libelous management.
3-The lack of judgment by Jon in putting himself in a position  that ended up with his arrest and conviction.
4-The tyrannical leadership displayed by Jon in his humiliation and exclusion of brother Chris Day.

While I think Jon is a brilliant man, I think he is no longer an effective president.
