TriMet invited people to the town hall meeting through tweets, a notice on its website, emails to riders who have signed up for agency alerts and a press release. Thirty-three people posted questions on a TweetChat page Trimet created, using the hashtag #askneil. During the hour-long session, McFarlane answered 35 questions — though he didn’t actually do the tweeting.

About a dozen people gathered in the room with McFarlane to view the questions on a large screen as they came in. McFarlane dictated the responses, but agency personnel familiar with TriMet’s Twitter account — and Twitter’s 140-character tweet restrictions — did the tweeting. Meanwhile, communication department officials were on hand to ensure responses were consistent, IT department folks were on hand in case there were any technical difficulties (there were none) and a handful of agency officials from various disciplines were in the room in case a question required a more specific response. Another person monitored the questions to ensure McFarlane answered to all participants (rather than addressing multiple questions posed by a single person) and grouped similar questions together as they came in so McFarlane could issue a single response.

It finally started snowing, around 10pm in Portland. Does it vindicate TRIMET with its "chains all day" policy"
I say not at all. People were late to work for no reason, drivers and passengers were subjected to the worst sort of pollution, and the system became unreliable, well before it was necessary.
I personally can live with the chains, earplugs and a short work shift.
But the drivers that have to deal with this all day for 10+ hours for basically no reason, and everybody who was late to work this morning, they did not deserve that sort of treatment.

This is the sort of event that occurs when people who don't use the system and don't understand the system end up in charge.
From their ivory tower they think they are doing the public some sort of favor.
All they do is discourage people from using the transit system and make their drivers sick.
It would have been much more effective, and far fewer people affected, if they had just waited for the snow to hit, then dealt with it.

Just saying.....But I am a nobody.....

I'm always surprised by the casual nature of TRIMET management in creating mayhem at their transit system.
Most supervisors reported no snow in most of the service area, yet all the buses went out with chains.
Buses didn't show up, buses were late, and people were left standing, all for no reason.
What's the matter with this management?
Why are they so callous to the needs of its riders?

TRIMET NEEDS TO DO BETTER WHEN THE CHAINS GO ON

TRIMET does a monstrous disservice to its riding public by not being honest about its bus service when they freak out over possible snow and put chains on.
The correct alert should be:

DUE TO OUR SAFETY MEASURES (needed or not) RIDERS SHOULD LEAVE ONE HOUR EARLIER THAN USUAL.
ONE HOUR DELAYS ARE THE  USUAL  AND LONGER DELAYS ARE VERY LIKELY.
That would be the honest rider alert.
 They probably should also put something in the alert stating you might not get picked up at all!
I've received report that a Line 51 bus slide off Southwest Dosch Road about 8 a.m. but another chained-up bus soon came up the hill after it. Also, I'm hearing more reports of full buses passing up stops this morning. That's always a risk when the weather forecast prompts people to leave their cars at home.

NO MONEY TO PAVE THE ROADS-PLENTY MONEY FOR THIS

The Portland Streetcar Loop Project is a 3.3-mile extension of the existing Portland Streetcar. The project will extend streetcar service from the Pearl District in NW Portland, across the Broadway Bridge to serve the eastside of the Portland Central City.
There will be 28 new streetcar stops between Memorial Coliseum and OMSI. The tracks will travel on Weidler Street to Lloyd Center at NE 7th Ave, south on Martin Luther King Jr Blvd to OMSI and return north on Grand Ave to Broadway and the Pearl District. Later, as a separate project, the Loop will be completed via a new bridge at the south end, allowing continuous connections around the entire Loop east and west of the Willamette River.
The cost estimate of the Loop Project is $148.27 million dollars:
  • $75 million provided by the Federal Government
  • $15.50 million from a local improvement district
  • $27.68 million from the Portland Development Commission
  • $3.62 million from regional funds
  • $6.11 million from SDC/other City funds
  • $.36 million from stimulus funds
Construction began last year and is expected to be completed by early 2012. The Portland Streetcar Loop is scheduled to begin operations Spring 2012. For more information on the project, visit www.portlandstreetcar.org.

TriMet is chaining up their entire bus fleet in preparation for a winter storm that could complicate Tuesday's commute.
TriMet spokeswoman Mary Fetsch said crews are working to chain up the entire fleet of about 950 buses, a task that takes anywhere from eight to 10 hours.
Fetsch said about 450 buses will be fitted with chains in time for Tuesday morning's commute.
TriMet has 65 buses that have automatic drop-down chains which will run on "key routes."
Because of the chains, the buses can only travel at about 25 mph. Because of the slower speed, Fetsch said that buses will likely not be on time, but will be arriving at stops at regular intervals.

I've been saying it for years, the real reason that Trimet loves fare less square is that IT GETS PEOPLE ON THE TRANSIT SYSTEM.
We all know how they BRAG about Trimet having the most rides PER CAPITA.
Well, guess what, It turns out that the great Blog PORTLAND A-FOOT which is written by MICHAEL ANDERSON, has discovered that if FREE is taken out of the equation, there will be a resulting DROP in total ridership.
Enough to end bragging rights about MOST RIDERSHIP PER CAPITA? We will only find out when its gone.
Elimination will certainly end MAX BRAGGING RIGHTS for sure.
I would wager heavily indeed that MAX RIDERSHIP WILL TUMBLE if the fareless is ended.
I've always speculated that TRIMET'S FLAWED TRANSFER SYSTEM is another way to bump up ridership numbers.
If they actually created a transfer system that was actually ENFORCEABLE, Trimet ridership would just be ho hum.


When we set the price of a Lindt truffle at 15 cents and a Kiss at one cent, we were not surprised to find that our customers acted with a good deal of rationality: they compared the price and quality of the Kiss with the price and quality of the truffle, and then made their choice. About 73 percent of them chose the truffle and 27 percent chose a Kiss.
Now we decided to see how FREE! might change the situation. So we offered the Lindt truffle for 14 cents and the Kisses free. … Some 69 percent of our customers (up from 27 percent before) chose the FREE! Kiss, giving up the opportunity to get the Lindt truffle for a very good price. Meanwhile, the Lindt truffle took a tumble; customers choosing it decreased from 73 to 31 percent.

Eliminating lowest-ridership bus service

TriMet estimated that it could save $1.8 million a year by discontinuing four to six bus lines and reducing trips on another ten to 12 lines "with less than half the system average ridership effectiveness," as well as service for "seasonal events."
In January 2012, TriMet spokeswoman Mary Fetsch said the agency hadn't made "any final determination on which lines might be eliminated and which ones could be scaled back" but she singled out TriMet's 16 lowest-performing bus lines: the 16, 18, 23, 30, 34, 36, 37, 38, 43, 47, 50, 55, 59, 84, 152 and 154.

TriMet estimated that it could save $1.3 million a year by reconfiguring overlapping or "redundant" bus routes to save costs, simplify routes or make travel more direct.

TRIMET expects others to honor contracts, as long as they don't have to.

This mess over the mystery train is showing the public just how hypocritical TRIMET management truly is. Trimet says they "have a contract" with Clackamas County and will go to court to enforce it.


Funny how they don't seem to follow contracts when it comes to labor law. Our union has been forced into court to get them to honor that contract. What a bunch of slugs the Trimet management are.

 Chaimov, along with Clackamas County attorney Scot Sideras, interprets the U.S. Constitution to say that government bodies cannot change laws to void existing contracts. 
I guess Scott Walker is in violation of the US Constitution then? Funny how nobody has mentioned that?

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) formally presented its concessions demands this week, only days before the contract deadline for some 35,000 bus and subway workers in New York City.

The transit agency is insisting on a three-year wage freeze along with a host of other major concessions. The givebacks include the elimination of the guaranteed 40-hour work week, with the introduction of part-time bus operators. A proposal to approximately double the amount workers pay for their health care coverage would be the equivalent of a huge pay cut.

MACFARLANE BRAGS ABOUT THE 80/20 HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN THAT MANAGMENT HAS

Macfarlane always seems to forget that most of the managers make far more money than most operators, and all the office people work in a controlled environment, basically nine-five. Operators are working all kinds of unhealthy work shifts covering all hours of the day, are exposed to toxins being emitted by the Trimet equipment, and exposed to all sorts of illnesses by being in such close contact with the public at large. In other words, our jobs kill us!
Macfarlane is comparing apples and oranges, people should not be fooled by his rhetoric.


I'd also like people to be aware that all the non union employees are vested after 5 years on the job. Union employees are vested after 10 years. How is that fair?


Macfarlane also likes to brag that he hasn't had pay raise in 4 years! Bus operators haven't had a pay raise in 28 years. The only reason our wages have risen at all is due to cost of living index. We are also now saddled with paying a % of our health care premium...

We were pleased to host FTA Administrator Peter Rogoff here in Portland over the last two days.  He was here to kick-off and attend the first ‘Streetcar Roundtable’ – we co-hosted the event with the City of Portland. It drew 55 city, transit district, and federal officials to share best practices in streetcar development.   

One of the highlights was a tour and ‘opening’ celebration for the reconstruction of Moody Street in South Waterfront.  Construction cranes and hard hats were evidence of the rapid change that District will see. The Oregon university system is developing a 265,000 square foot ‘collaborative life sciences building’ right at the future intersection of the Portland to Milwaukie light rail line, streetcar, our north south buses (now the 35 and 36), and our future bus lines using the PMLR bridge (9,17, 19).  The cranes supporting the construction of the bridge was part of the scene.   The new Moody is the kind of ‘complete’ street we’ll see more of in the region’s future.  It includes a cycle track, pedestrian way, streetcar, and auto lanes. Nice design – and good for transit.

In meeting with the Administrator, we reviewed the status of the PMLR project, CRC, and our growing ridership. He told me personally what he later said at the Moody Street event regarding the PMLR – “ …the money is on its way." Message couldn’t get better than that.         

I want to offer special thanks to the community relations team, particularly the staff in Ann Becklund’s department (but others as well), for the great effort in co-hosting the roundtable.   Their efforts made us look good once again to a national audience – and key stakeholders and funders.

Trimet's latest humiliation happened yesterday on bus 71. Two fare evaders were asked to leave the bus over two bad transfers The incident escalated out of control and now we have two people in jail (at the cost of much more than $3.70), several people emotionally scarred, and another incident where Trimet looks to be the most dangerous place to be in Portland.

When will the bus drivers learn to PUSH THE FARE EVASION BUTTON and let the evaders ride for crying out loud!

It's not worth the trouble, there are uniformed personnel that handle fare evasions. The bus drivers job is to drive the bus and NOTIFY DISPATCH in case of fare evasion.

Macfarlane's absurdity

 TriMet promoted Thursday night’s virtual Tw-on hall with General Manager Neil McFarlane as if it were the agency's moon-launch moment on Twitter. I’m not sure the event managed to leave the Portland skyline.

McFarlane started the 6 p.m. #askneil Q&A conversation in bursts of 140-character-or-less messages with one simple rule: “We have one hour, so I’ll try to answer as many questions (one question per tweeter) as I can before 7 p.m.”

Of course, that one-question-per-tweeter rule stalled out as soon as McFarlane realized TriMet riders weren’t exactly clamoring to drill him on budget issues in the middle of the evening rush hour.

The GM wound up answering (or, in some cases, not answering) multiple questions from the same handful of tweeters. There seemed to be just as many transit haters as riders hurling tweets.

For the most part, the queries stuck to trying to make sense of how TriMet is once again running on red ink even as ridership grows. Among other things, McFarlane hinted at the agency working on options to pay fares electronically and making money by selling ads on its website.

But many comments and questions strayed into the misinformed, conspiratorial, union-bashing and wildly hyperbolic (“ChargerJeff” claimed 80 percent of Clackamas residents oppose light rail, before changing that figure to 71 percent and eventually dropping the issue altogether).

In the end, McFarlane signed off with: “You can provide your feedback in person, if you prefer. We’re holding open houses in February. #askneil"
Fortunately, the MAX FAQ’s blog archived the entire conversion.

FASCIST YOU TUBE THREATENS ME WITH SHUTDOWN

Joe Rose posted the MAX ATTACK to YouTube so I then posted it to YouTube, well guess what?
They threatened to kick my ass....I hate YouTube, gonna have to use VIMEO more where they have not turned into the hypocritical assholes that YouTube has. There is so much garbage on YouTube that its absurd that they threaten me over a "real life" video.

Due to a mechanical problem, MAX Blue and Red line trains cannot travel between the Sunset Transit Center and the Galleria/SW 10th Ave. station. Shuttle buses will be taking riders between the two stations. Riders should expect delays for the next hour or so.
