AL M INTERRUPTS HIS SATURDAY NIGHT TO WATCH THE HEAD SQUID

HEAD SQUID ON KGW RIGHT NOW

THE MESS THAT IS TRIMET

Many of us out at MERLO have been roped into this bullshit ADA call stop nonsense.
The assholes we work for don't even attempt to verify a so called report of not calling stops. (For example, there is a trip that supposedly didn't call the stops, there is no effort made to see if this is a pattern or a one time aberration , TRIMET operators are expected to be PAVLOVIAN in nature, never actually being human and tiring.)
THE MANAGEMENT HAS NO IDEA HOW TIRING IT IS TO CONSTANTLY BE CALLING THESE FUCKING STOPS BECAUSE THE ASSHOLES THAT RUN THIS PLACE FAILED TO UPGRADE THE EQUIPMENT TO ADA COMPLIANT!

In my case, I know for a fact that the report was a blatant lie.
Others have the exact same experience.
Yet the slimy management persists in torturing its employees with these anonymous FIRST TRANSIT spy's that ride our buses and pretend to be actual riders.

One of things I like about working here is hanging out with my fellow operators at the MERLO GARAGE.
Many of us pool our experiences and compare notes, and of course I BLOG EVERYTHING, and sometimes am in a position to check out various aspects of experiences.

Recently a fellow operator called dispatch and requested a call stop list. The dispatcher said they would "get it to them."
After some delay it was finally relayed to the dispatcher that no such thing existed and that they should inform the operator to
CALL OUT ALL MAJOR INTERSECTIONS AND TRANSFER POINTS.
The dispatcher told the operator to CALL OUT ALL MAJOR STOPS AND INTERSECTIONS.
There was no reference made to calling out 'every time you turn the bus' or anything else for that matter.

THE MANAGEMENT THEMSELVES DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THE PROCEDURE IS.

AND THIS IS WHO WE WORK FOR AND DISCIPLINES US, A COMPANY WHERE THE MANAGEMENT DOESN'T EVEN KNOW THE PROCEDURE.

MEMOIRS OF A BUS RIDER

It's been real, y'all.

No, seriously, it doesn't get more real than this. Since April 2009, I've been riding one CTA bus a week, end to end, in an attempt to travel every CTA bus route. I finally finished last month—after 139 bus trips.

I started this project when I took over as RedEye's CTA columnist as a way to get to know the transit system. In the end, I got to know Chicago and its residents—some in embarassingly intimate ways.

I've been spit on and hit on. I've sat in urine and sunflower seeds. I've traveled through marsh and wooded areas just to get to bus stops—only to wait 20 minutes for the next bus.

LETS GET A MOVEMENT LIKE THIS IN PORTLAND

“The MBTA and the MBCR have been horribly managed, in my opinion, for certainly the 10 years I’ve been in Boston,” she said. “I would start at the top and work down, and make a real effort to radically overhaul the system.”
She wants state or federal intervention to solve the budget crisis. “As a society, we have to decide sometimes that some things matter enough that we’re willing to do what it takes to keep these essential services up and running,” she said.

How to Entice Car Owners to Switch to Public Transit

The first thing the researchers noticed, in line with previous research, is that dependent transit riders tend to take the bus and choice riders tend to take rail. Bus/dependent riders tend to come from lower-income zones and has less access to a car, compared with rail/choice riders. Unlike their bus-riding counterparts, rail riders place a premium on out-of-vehicle travel time — in other words, they don't like when it takes a long time to get to a transit station. The central business district is a major destination for rail riders, and they also seem to prefer going through transit-oriented developments. Neither of these factors plays a major role in bus/dependent travel, according to the report; on the contrary, bus riders are trying to reach lower-density employment centers.

Congress Will PAY YOU to Avoid Public Transit in 2012

As part of the 2009 stimulus package passed by the Democratic controlled congress, commuters could qualify for a subsidy of $230 per month towards mass transit expenses. But your tax write off for parking? Ten bucks more at $240.
So much for Washington believing in public transportation.
If that isn’t crazy enough, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (that’s the formal name for the “stimulus” bill) only offered a temporary increase to mass transit reimbursement. As of January 1, commuters getting a pre-tax reimbursement for transit will revert to just $125.
That’s right. You get twice as much of a write-off to drive to work instead of taking the bus. Read the details at the University of South Florida’s National Center for Transit Research.

SCOTT WALKER FACES HISTORIC RECALL-SOMEBODY NEEDS TO RECALL MACFARLANE

Opponents of Wisconsin Republican Gov. Scott Walker have submitted more than a million signatures seeking his recall in a statewide vote. The million-plus signatures amount to nearly double the required number of 540,000 and may mark the largest recall effort in U.S. history. Walker is being challenged for pushing through a controversial law ending collective bargaining rights for most public workers. The million signatures "represent almost half of the electorate in the last election, in 2010, and what you might reasonably presume to be the electorate that would participate in a recall election," says John Nichols of The Nation magazine. "[Walker] will be forced to face a new election, because he adopted the austerity agenda of the Republican and conservative leadership in Washington and tried to balance budgets on the backs of public employees, tried to destroy their unions, tried to cut school funding, and succeeded in cutting funding. And we’re going to have a referendum on the most fundamental of economic issues."

SF bus driver charged in crosswalk death

A San Francisco bus driver has been charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter for the death of a pedestrian who was struck in a Castro district crosswalk last summer.
The San Francisco Chronicle ( http://bit.ly/zXINdV) says 36-year-old Wallace Loggins was driving his empty San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency bus to a new assignment when he ran over 23-year-old Emily Dunn on Aug. 19.
Loggins was released on $10,000 bail after he was arrested and booked on Saturday. His arraignment has been set for Friday.
Loggins was making a left turn when his 40-foot bus struck and killed Dunn as she was about to reach the curb.
Prosecutors say Loggins was negligent for not seeing Dunn crossing the street.

The case of the "baby bus driver"

While the bloodthirsty press aided by our union busting management were quick to condemn Claudine Hendren, one fact that was interestingly left out was that Trimet conducted an 'investigation' just to find the mom in the case.

The mom really didn't want to make a big out of this but was basically forced to make the complaint. The mom Stated that she was not 'thrown' off the bus at all, she left on her own accord.

Due to Trimets own actions, in their zeal to make Claudine look bad and by default make all it's operators look badly, they got themselves sued by the mom!

Trimet- the only place I have ever heard of that goes out of its way to get itself sued! Good job Trimet!

On-board transfer printers????

TriMet is replacing its Bus Dispatch System (BDS) to comply with Federal Communication Commission (FCC) regulations. As part of the upgrade, TriMet has the option to install on-board transfer printers. These printers would replace the current paper transfer system and eliminate the need for punches. We want know what bus operators think of this option.

Would it make issuing transfers easier?
Would it be simpler for customers?

See Max comments-employees can fill out survey in express line area of Trinet
Are there any other issues that should be considered?
There’s a demonstration of the transfer printer on display in the Center St report area. You can check it out during spring sign up through January 26. Try it out and tell us what you think by completing a survey.
In 2012, new CAD/AVL equipment, including a replacement for the VCH, will be installed on all TriMet buses to replace our outdated BDS system.
One upgrade option that TriMet is considering is a transfer printer, to replace the current cutter bar-metal punch-newsprint transfer system.

Here’s what this option would involve:

• Installing a transfer printer—a device about the size of two bricks stacked together— on each bus, in addition to the device that replaces the VCH.
• The operator pushes a button on the screen; a transfer with the correct expiration time prints out.
• Transfer paper and print quality are similar to tickets from newer ticket vending machines.
• Each roll of paper lasts for 300-500 tickets.
• Instead of punching and tearing transfers throughout the day, the operator changes the paper about once a day on Frequent Service lines, and less often on other lines.

The CAD/AVL team wants to know what bus operators think of the transfer printer option. A demo unit is on display during spring signup (Jan. 17-26) in the Center report area.

LIST OF TRIMET ASSAULTS 2010

In response to a recent series of high-profile attacks on TriMet passengers, the regional transit agency said Friday that is changing its security deployment tactics and will be targeting missions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
TriMet officials declined to discuss the specific changes, saying they cannot provide such details as times and locations of the upcoming missions because they related to security.

Three attacks have generated headlines in the past few weeks. The first occurred on Dec. 26 when a 14-year-old Centennial High School student was assault by three young women on a Green Line MAX train. The attackers were arrested Thursday and their mother was also charged with hindering prosecution.
A 15-year-old Benson High School student was attacked by a motorist on Jan. 11 as he was walking to a MAX station in the Rose Quarter. His assailant has not yet been caught.
Then on Thursday, police arrested a mother and her daughter for punching two passengers on a TriMet bus near Southeast 122nd Avenue and Division Street.
According to statistics released by TriMet, 471 crimes were reported along the system in 2010, the last year for which full figures are available. They include 77 misdemeanor and felony assaults.

THE MAN WITHOUT A HEART WANTS YOU TO TAKE A WALK FOR YOUR HEART

I'm sure that many of us made one or two New Year's resolutions this year - mine is to balance our budget - but I would challenge you to add one more to your list - focusing on your heart health.

Heart disease is the number one killer in the nation and one of the simplest things you can do to help decrease your risk is walk. On May 19, the American Heart Association in Portland is holding their annual Heart Walk and I have pledged TriMet's support. I ask that each of you consider joining me in the 5k and in raising funds for research and education. Our goal is to raise over $250,000 for continued research and to have 10 teams of TriMet walkers.

More information on the walk, including how to register and a friendly competition, will be shared in the coming weeks but until then, please think about joining me in this cause. I also encourage you to consider being a "champion" and rally support for a TriMet team. If you are interested, contact Susan Jeffries in Organization Development or click here.

Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 19. There are two walk locations - Portland and Vancouver - to make participation even simpler. Not only is the Heart Walk a great way to show your support of the community, it's a great way to show your support for your TriMet family and those who have been, or may still be, touched by heart disease. Take the first step for your heart health!

Best,
Neil

TRIMET BUDGET BALONEY

Join us at the next Information Picket – January 25th

It has been some time since ATU 757 has held a picket before the Tri Met Board meeting but this is so important that we feel we have no choice but to do it again. Please come join us at this informational picket January 25th at 8:00 am in front of the Portland building. Please feel free to stay for the meeting (9:00am) and give your opinion to the Trimet board.
TriMet has no budget crisis and they need to manage taxpayer dollars better. There is no need for slick expensive brochures that attack 87% of their employees ,websites or meetings with the public. TriMet should sit down and work with ATU 757. Please go to www.ATU757.org to see the Union's recommendations for TriMet.
This information along with the attached flier is meant for wide distribution and for all politicians and government board members. Please print and distribute the flier to all tax payers and those who are fed up with TriMet's mismanagement of funds, sending millions of dollars overseas, unnecessary rate hikes and service cuts.
We have been asking for help from all politicians for a long time with regards to TriMet's illegal actions toward our members. Please investigate our recommendations and help us make TriMet a more efficient agency.

DID MACFARLANE ACTUALLY TWEET?

(excerpt)
TriMet invited people to the town hall meeting through tweets, a notice on its website, emails to riders who have signed up for agency alerts and a press release. Thirty-three people posted questions on a TweetChat page Trimet created, using the hashtag #askneil. During the hour-long session, McFarlane answered 35 questions — though he didn’t actually do the tweeting.

About a dozen people gathered in the room with McFarlane to view the questions on a large screen as they came in. McFarlane dictated the responses, but agency personnel familiar with TriMet’s Twitter account — and Twitter’s 140-character tweet restrictions — did the tweeting. Meanwhile, communication department officials were on hand to ensure responses were consistent, IT department folks were on hand in case there were any technical difficulties (there were none) and a handful of agency officials from various disciplines were in the room in case a question required a more specific response. Another person monitored the questions to ensure McFarlane answered to all participants (rather than addressing multiple questions posed by a single person) and grouped similar questions together as they came in so McFarlane could issue a single response.

ACTUAL SNOW-in portland

It finally started snowing, around 10pm in Portland. Does it vindicate TRIMET with its "chains all day" policy"
I say not at all. People were late to work for no reason, drivers and passengers were subjected to the worst sort of pollution, and the system became unreliable, well before it was necessary.
I personally can live with the chains, earplugs and a short work shift.
But the drivers that have to deal with this all day for 10+ hours for basically no reason, and everybody who was late to work this morning, they did not deserve that sort of treatment.

This is the sort of event that occurs when people who don't use the system and don't understand the system end up in charge.
From their ivory tower they think they are doing the public some sort of favor.
All they do is discourage people from using the transit system and make their drivers sick.
It would have been much more effective, and far fewer people affected, if they had just waited for the snow to hit, then dealt with it.

Just saying.....But I am a nobody.....

TRIMET NEEDS TO DO BETTER WHEN THE CHAINS GO ON

TRIMET does a monstrous disservice to its riding public by not being honest about its bus service when they freak out over possible snow and put chains on.
The correct alert should be:

DUE TO OUR SAFETY MEASURES (needed or not) RIDERS SHOULD LEAVE ONE HOUR EARLIER THAN USUAL.
ONE HOUR DELAYS ARE THE  USUAL  AND LONGER DELAYS ARE VERY LIKELY.
That would be the honest rider alert.
They probably should also put something in the alert stating you might not get picked up at all!
I've received report that a Line 51 bus slide off Southwest Dosch Road about 8 a.m. but another chained-up bus soon came up the hill after it. Also, I'm hearing more reports of full buses passing up stops this morning. That's always a risk when the weather forecast prompts people to leave their cars at home.

TheSpec - City bus drivers poised to strike

HOW TO MAKE YOUR BUS SYSTEM WORK-(hint-do the opposite of Trimet)

Across the city's transit system, ridership has soared by more than 50 percent since 2008, steadily increasing every year. In 2011, more than 1.55 million people boarded a city bus, city officials said. The tally includes about half of the system's passengers who needed to take more than one bus on the same fare. Those people are counted more than once per trip.
City officials credit newer, cleaner buses, extended evening hours and route changes over the past few years designed to help buses run on time.
"They're more reliable, and people recognize we've made a lot of steps to improve service," said Randy Hume, the transit director.

NO MONEY TO PAVE THE ROADS-PLENTY MONEY FOR THIS

The Portland Streetcar Loop Project is a 3.3-mile extension of the existing Portland Streetcar. The project will extend streetcar service from the Pearl District in NW Portland, across the Broadway Bridge to serve the eastside of the Portland Central City.
There will be 28 new streetcar stops between Memorial Coliseum and OMSI. The tracks will travel on Weidler Street to Lloyd Center at NE 7th Ave, south on Martin Luther King Jr Blvd to OMSI and return north on Grand Ave to Broadway and the Pearl District. Later, as a separate project, the Loop will be completed via a new bridge at the south end, allowing continuous connections around the entire Loop east and west of the Willamette River.
The cost estimate of the Loop Project is $148.27 million dollars:
  • $75 million provided by the Federal Government
  • $15.50 million from a local improvement district
  • $27.68 million from the Portland Development Commission
  • $3.62 million from regional funds
  • $6.11 million from SDC/other City funds
  • $.36 million from stimulus funds
Construction began last year and is expected to be completed by early 2012. The Portland Streetcar Loop is scheduled to begin operations Spring 2012. For more information on the project, visit www.portlandstreetcar.org.

I wonder what Martin Luther King would have thought of union busting Neil?

Hello Colleagues,
Public access to transportation will forever have an intrinsic connection to the Civil Rights’ movement in the United States. As many would say: It All Started on the Bus
On Monday, our nation remembers the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. TriMet is proud to be a community sponsor of this year’s Skanner Breakfast and the World Arts Foundation’s, tribute to Dr. King.
As your schedule permits, I’d encourage you to take time to participate in the many events taking place throughout the day. TriMet’s General Manager, Neil McFarlane, will be giving remarks at the World Arts Foundation, Inc . 27th “Keep Alive The Dream” Tribute around 4pm (flyer attached).
Thank you for all you do every day and I hope you have an opportunity to participate in the festivities.

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -
TriMet is chaining up their entire bus fleet in preparation for a winter storm that could complicate Tuesday's commute.
TriMet spokeswoman Mary Fetsch said crews are working to chain up the entire fleet of about 950 buses, a task that takes anywhere from eight to 10 hours.
Fetsch said about 450 buses will be fitted with chains in time for Tuesday morning's commute.
TriMet has 65 buses that have automatic drop-down chains which will run on "key routes."
Because of the chains, the buses can only travel at about 25 mph. Because of the slower speed, Fetsch said that buses will likely not be on time, but will be arriving at stops at regular intervals.

RUMOR-MACFARLANE HAS BEEN IN SALEM PRESSURING LAW MAKERS

I've heard rumors that Macfarlane has been in Salem and trying to get legislative action to resolve his labor issues.
The sort of action that SCOTT WALKER got from his legislator.
Now we have some possible confirmation that this could indeed be in the works.

The Legislature compounded TriMet's woes several years ago. Now the governor, the Legislature, TriMet's board and the transit union leadership need to work together to fast-track a solution. As for the no-strike status, remember, what the Legislature gives, the Legislature can take away.

MACFARLANE SENDS THE PROPAGANDA AROUND TO THE MAYORS OF THE AREA

Subject: The Challenges & Choices Ahead

Dear Mayor Arnold,

As you may have heard, TriMet is facing a $12 to $17 million budget
shortfall. Tough budget choices are ahead and we want to know what's most
important to you and your community.

TRIMET throws around information without supporting documentation

It's very nice that the propaganda department can construct these cute little charts. But to put out this sort of propaganda without producing the facts that created the chart is evidence of ethical failure.
And ethical organization would produce for all of us to see a list of other transit districts along with a clear explanation of their EXACT benefit structures. Showing the public a chart without the facts  is disingenuous. Are they putting forth the argument that they surveyed ALL the other transit districts before making this chart?

TRIMET CLAIMS THEIR BENEFITS "MOST COSTLY IN USA"

Of course its a lie, take a look at the CTA BENEFITS STRUCTURE!

PORTLAND A-FOOT DISCOVERS THE REAL RATIONAL BEHIND "FARELESS"

I've been saying it for years, the real reason that Trimet loves fare less square is that IT GETS PEOPLE ON THE TRANSIT SYSTEM.
We all know how they BRAG about Trimet having the most rides PER CAPITA.
Well, guess what, It turns out that the great Blog PORTLAND A-FOOT which is written by MICHAEL ANDERSON, has discovered that if FREE is taken out of the equation, there will be a resulting DROP in total ridership.
Enough to end bragging rights about MOST RIDERSHIP PER CAPITA? We will only find out when its gone.
Elimination will certainly end MAX BRAGGING RIGHTS for sure.
I would wager heavily indeed that MAX RIDERSHIP WILL TUMBLE if the fareless is ended.
I've always speculated that TRIMET'S FLAWED TRANSFER SYSTEM is another way to bump up ridership numbers.
If they actually created a transfer system that was actually ENFORCEABLE, Trimet ridership would just be ho hum.

When we set the price of a Lindt truffle at 15 cents and a Kiss at one cent, we were not surprised to find that our customers acted with a good deal of rationality: they compared the price and quality of the Kiss with the price and quality of the truffle, and then made their choice. About 73 percent of them chose the truffle and 27 percent chose a Kiss.
Now we decided to see how FREE! might change the situation. So we offered the Lindt truffle for 14 cents and the Kisses free. … Some 69 percent of our customers (up from 27 percent before) chose the FREE! Kiss, giving up the opportunity to get the Lindt truffle for a very good price. Meanwhile, the Lindt truffle took a tumble; customers choosing it decreased from 73 to 31 percent.

TRIMET USERS ALONG SUBURBAN ROUTES, GET READY TO LOOSE YOUR SERVICE

Eliminating lowest-ridership bus service

TriMet estimated that it could save $1.8 million a year by discontinuing four to six bus lines and reducing trips on another ten to 12 lines "with less than half the system average ridership effectiveness," as well as service for "seasonal events."
In January 2012, TriMet spokeswoman Mary Fetsch said the agency hadn't made "any final determination on which lines might be eliminated and which ones could be scaled back" but she singled out TriMet's 16 lowest-performing bus lines: the 16, 18, 23, 30, 34, 36, 37, 38, 43, 47, 50, 55, 59, 84, 152 and 154.

[edit] Eliminating 'redundant' bus service

TriMet estimated that it could save $1.3 million a year by reconfiguring overlapping or "redundant" bus routes to save costs, simplify routes or make travel more direct.
In a January 2012 email, spokeswoman Mary Fetsch offered "a look at some which have some redundancy":

TRIMET expects others to honor contracts, as long as they don't have to.

This mess over the mystery train is showing the public just how hypocritical TRIMET management truly is. Trimet says they "have a contract" with Clackamas County and will go to court to enforce it.

Funny how they don't seem to follow contracts when it comes to labor law. Our union has been forced into court to get them to honor that contract. What a bunch of slugs the Trimet management are.

Chaimov, along with Clackamas County attorney Scot Sideras, interprets the U.S. Constitution to say that government bodies cannot change laws to void existing contracts.
I guess Scott Walker is in violation of the US Constitution then? Funny how nobody has mentioned that?
