You know, with the money being spend on this, why not get the smart card upgrade with the radios?

As been mentioned before, MAX could charge distance based fares with smart cards. Tap on, Tap off, done. Fail to tap off, its just like here, you get charged the maximum fare.

Lets use Sound Transit for the example here. Buses are zoned by county, cross a county line, 2 Zone fare. Rail is distance based by mile, A flat "Boarding Fee" plus a per mile charge. All use Smart Card fare payment, especially since none of their service accept or issue paper transfers.

This technology TriMet is bringing in is getting replaced everywhere. Translink in Vancouver uses it, but Smart Cards are coming next year, WITH fare gates!! But what am I thinking, TriMet on cutting edge fare collection technology? Just look at the TVMs.
