Out of 10 positions, only one (the lowest paid) will actually provide any service to the riding public.

The rest of them, who knows, I guess its all part of that Milwaukie boondoggle feeding millions into the machine and providing all sorts of jobs that have nothing to do with serving the public good.

No, they're vital. Just ask MuHuff. That Systems Engineer II Linux/Unix server is also the payroll guy, because according to him I.T. runs the payroll department.

I've never seen a company that had payroll run through I.T. (in fact most companies had their payroll outsourced to companies like ADP) but McHuff says TriMet I.T. does it.)

Well in the same vain, if you're Erik then you assume that you can just use a pocket calculator and paper to manage your HR records, generate time tables, track vacation days, hours worked, etc. You can forget about getting reroutes, AVL, tracking ridership, radio communications, etc -- those are handled by computers too.

Hell Erik, why not take it one step further and eliminate lights, diesel engines, electricity, etc? That's got to be a real money saver, right?

To answer your point specifically Erik, even if you contract out payroll to a company like ADP, you still need someone who works at TriMet to submit the number of hours worked, vacation days taken, etc and all of that happens by computer; and whenever you have people working on computers, you have an IT department.
