TriMet boosts LIFT fares; increase to be phased in

TriMet: Bus driver who hit Tigard woman on Oregon 99W has 'good record'

The TriMet bus driver who struck a woman crossing Oregon 99W in Tigard last week has been identified as 64-year-old Tony Dauenhauer, a six-year veteran who has a clean driving record with the transit agency.
Dauenhauer remains on administrative leave as TriMet conducts its own investigation. “He has a good record,” said TriMet spokeswoman Mary Fetsch.

Neil Macfarlanes latest comments on the labor ruling (with my insightful comments of course)

I wanted to post an update to our efforts to secure a new ATU contract.  It’s taken more twists and turns over the past week.  First, the arbitration is delayed until mid-May.  Second, the ERB once again limited the issues the arbitrator will have before him.
On February 16, 2012, Employment Relations Board (ERB) issued an order that precludes TriMet from making any wage proposal as part of our final offer in the arbitration with ATU. This decision comes just three days after the arbitrator, at ATU’s request, agreed to a second delay in the interest arbitration that would resolve our long standing labor contract dispute with ATU. The arbitration is now delayed until mid-May. Previously, the ERB eliminated from the arbitration most of TriMet's proposals intended to reform the medical plans that we believe are out of step with the market.(see GREECE for market conditions) As you know, this year we are trying  to close a 17 million dollar budget shortfall mostly with service cuts and fare increases. The latest ERB decision is posted on our website.

"TRIMET IS BREAKING THE LAW"

How many times have we heard ATU 757 President JONATHAN HUNT chant that slogan?
Well we now have the second instance where Trimet Management has been determined to be breaking the law.
I wish I had a job where I could break the law, waste millions of dollars,  keep my job, and walk away rich.
Alas, I am a lowly unionized employee, not even deserving of my cost of living increases, paid health care,or basic human dignity.

ATU 757 PRESIDENT JON HUNT REACTS TO RULING

Ruling by the Oregon Employment Relations Board
Another Bad TriMet Management Decision Will Cost Taxpayers

In a decision that contained blistering comments about the negotiating behavior of TriMet’s management team’s negotiating tactics, the Oregon Employment Relations Board (ERB), for the third time, ruled against TriMet in an ongoing labor dispute with its union. At the bottom of the dispute is a colossal error made by TriMet negotiators. They failed and/or refused to put a wage offer on the bargaining table. Then they tried to correct that failure at the last minute by proposing a brand-new wage proposal to the interest arbitrator.

ERB rightfully rejected this tactic noting that the timing of TriMet’s first wage proposal “eliminated any chance for the earlier steps in the bargaining process to work.. Such a significant and last-minute change in position demonstrates TriMet’s lack of good faith.” One board member was even more blunt, stating “TriMet does not appear to have learned its lesson.”

READ THE ERB RULING!

HERE!

WE GET OUR(some of it) MONEY BACK FROM THE THIEVES WHO STOLE IT FROM US!

In a Monday press release, the ATU said TriMet must now grant retroactive and future pay increases to all of its members.
“TriMet must increase all unionized employee wages by 3% retroactive to June 1, 2011; by 2.1% increase retroactive to December 1, 2011, and by 2.9% wage increase due on June 1, 2012,” the press release said.
Contacted by the Portland Tribune, TriMet spokeswoman Mary Fetsch said if that is true, the agency is not looking at a $17 million funding shortfall instead of the small $12 million one that would not have included the increases. Fetsch said she had not had to discuss the ruling with TriMet’s labor negotiators, however, and did not know if the ruling could be appealed.

OPERATOR CLEARED IN TIGARD INCIDENT

Zoe Ann Mead

TriMet bus driver didn't have enough time to avoid crash with Tigard woman, police said | OregonLive.com

Gresham Transit Center a safety hazard now

As one of the knee-jerk reactions to the Sandy Day incident, buses that layover in the transit center proper are not allowed to turn right onto Kelly Ave. The rationale was that a danger of a bus being struck by the railroad crossing arm exists. So they moved the 9 layover to where the 20 used to (on 8th St.) moved to 12 to where the 9 used to be, and the 20 where the 12 was. It DOES NOT WORK! Neither operators or road supervisors were ever consulted.

The 9 only runs every 40 minutes or worse, but has almost the entire block to layover. During the day, the 20 runs just as often as the 4 yet is only allocated one space in the TC so operators coming in as a 20 only have the undesignated overflow bay if it is available. If it isn't there are no instructions as to what to do. So the poor operator with the bladder and/or rectum which is in dire need of being emptied has to drive around several blocks to either go try again or go to the line 4 overflow on 10th Drive nearside Hood.

MORE INFO COMES FORWARD IN THE LATEST PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT!

Did the 45 used to just cross Pacific Hwy at McDonald/Main instead of turning onto Pac Hwy from Walnut then onto Main?

Yes it did. It went behind the church there but they rerouted because drivers would occasionally clip the stop sign at Walnut and Grant.

Well hell let's blame the incident on Service Planning then! They act like they're infallible (look at the bullshit at Gresham TC.) Lay this on them and give them a reality check.

I hear you , I'm just sick and tired of safety being placed solely on the operator. Since Service Planning & Scheduling changed the route, I feel they should be scrutinized for this too. But believe-you-me the lady managing that department believes her shit doesn't stink and doesn't give a rat's snot ball what's really going on outside of her office.

The Biscuit Wheels are Falling off the Gravy Train
TriMet proposed big changes at the agency last week to fill a $12 to $17 million budget hole, which will mean more pain for its customers.
Longer waits, higher fares, more transfers, and no more “free rail zone” or using the same ticket for going back the same way you came.
So does the budget crunch mean TriMet has less money than it did last year? Not quite.
TriMet’s operating budget is expanding $50 million this year, or 12 percent.
In fact, since 2007 TriMet’s operating funding has increased 28 percent or $103 million. TriMet’s total resources have increased 65 percent or $392 million over the same period.
2012 02 17 Biscuit Wheels TriMet is costing more and giving less
So what is TriMet giving its customers in return?
Between 2007 and 2011, total miles driven by TriMet buses has decreased almost three million miles, while being offset by an increase of only 500,000 rail miles.
In total, TriMet had a decrease in service by 2.5 million miles.
More money, less service.

Positives from Negatives- A Paper On Improving the Reconfiguring Route Plan

CAMERON JOHNSON

Bus joke

A man was riding a bus, minding his own business, when the gorgeous woman next to him started to breastfeed her baby. The baby wouldn't take it, so she said,
"Come on, eat it all up or ... I'll have to give it to this nice man here."
Five minutes later, the baby was still not feeding, so she said,
"Come on, honey. Take it or I'll give it to this nice man here."
A few minutes later, the anxious man blurted out, "Come on, kid. Make up your mind! I was supposed to get off four stops ago!"

'CRIME TRAIN"

Girl sharpens machete on MAX
Machete on MAX! (sorry about quality)

Passengers on a TriMet MAX train were stunned Saturday afternoon, when a young girl with a machete strapped to her waist got on the train, and started sharpening the blade. Passenger Carl Bain snapped a cellphone picture of the girl, and the machete, about 5:30 Saturday afternoon.
"I got on the MAX at the 42nd Avenue stop, heading towards downtown, and when we got into fareless square, a bunch of street kids got on, " said Bain. " One of them had to wedge in right up close to me because there's a Blazer game going on. Lots of people on it. She decided to take the machete that was hanging from her belt and pull it up to my face and start sharpening it. It was a full-size, I'm going to go jungle-hunting machete, about two and a half feet long."
Bain says the girl was unaware that the machete was getting close to people, including children, on the crowded train. "I was worried. Every time the MAX stopped, she would waver with it. She would point it around by my face, and I actually had to put my hand up to block her from hitting me in the face with it."
The girl and her friends got off at the Skidmore Fountain stop in Old Town. So did Bain. But he put as much distance between him and the machete as possible. "I think next time, I'll just get in my car and drive (downtown)," said Bain. "You can walk through Portland, apparently, with a machete tied to your belt-and hop on a MAX train."
Portland Police and TriMet said what the girl did was illegal. TriMet prohibits any blade longer than three inches on any of its property. Also, no weapon can be carried or displayed in a manner that causes fear or alarm.
Portland Police say this may turn into a criminal investigation. Transit police are looking at surveillance video, to see if they can identify the girl with the machete, or her friends.
Police say anyone who sees a situation like this on public transit should call 911, as soon as it's safe to do so.

Obama clueless on transit funding

But neither LaHood nor Obama bothered to explain why, exactly, there should be any such spending shift with money that comes largely from automobile drivers. The administration has instead been deploying gauzy buzzwords like “livability” — declaring that driving is bad, while transit, walking and biking are good.
In urban areas, that’s the right message. Everywhere else, driving is known as “the only way to get to work or to the grocery store.”

Now, once again, TriMet’s failure to comply with the order of the Oregon Employment Relations Board (OERB) has resulted in the contract interest arbitration hearing date being pushed forward to May 14, 2012.

When the parties reached impasse in July 2010, they expected the contract interest arbitration to be held by the end of the year. When TriMet submitted its final offer to arbitration as required by law, the Union filed an unfair labor practice complaint with the OERB, alleging that TriMet’s proposal violated state law. That action automatically delayed commencement of the arbitration. The OERB agreed with the Union and found TriMet guilty of violating the law on September 12, 2011.

Motorcycle into side of Trimet bus 27 and Alberta motorcycle under bus

Bicyclist hit by bus mirror (lightly)

Monday, I was riding northbound on N Williams, hugging the left side of the bike lane, as I normally do when passing parked cars [in order to avoid the door zone]. At about NE Thompson, I was startled by a light "thwack" on the left side of my helmet. My instant thought was "tree branch", but my startling carried on as a TriMet bus passed me within an elbow's reach.
I realized my helmet had been grazed by the bus's side mirror.

Temporary Removal of Modesty Panels on 1400s and 1600s:
Keep personal items safe
TriMet is in the process of replacing our current radio system with a state of the art CAD/AVL system (computer aided dispatch/automatic vehicle locator). In preparation, the modesty panel on all 1400 and 1600 buses has been removed to accommodate installation of the CAD/AVL.
The CAD/AVL installation schedule continues to evolve. At this point, the timing for permanently replacing the modesty panels on 1400s and 1600s as part of the radio installation is not scheduled to occur until later this year.
To ensure that operators are able to shield their personal items from public access, maintenance will be installing a temporary modesty panel in these buses over the next few weeks. In the interim, operators of 1400 and 1600 buses are encouraged to reduce the size of personal carry on items and to store these items in a manner that keeps them inaccessible to the public.
If you have any questions, please contact your manager.

Republicans are understandably skeptical of "new starts"

The House Republican transportation bill ends gas tax subsidies of transit and requires that any new rail projects receiving “New Starts” grants meet strict financial tests and not simply be awarded on the basis of some vague concept such as “livability.” In response, Secretary of Livability Ray LaHood says it is vital to keep funding transit out of gas taxes. As an example, he cites the Portland-to-Milwaukie light-rail line, which he says is “an integral part of rebuilding the nation’s economy.”

"THE BEST IN THE COUNTRY'? I DON'T THINK SO!

The problem is . . . you keep losing. Money. My money, not yours. Because your fares don’t even cover half the T’s costs. The single biggest source of MBTA money comes from sales taxes paid by the rest of us.
So when one of the rider/whiners asked Monday, “How much do you expect the poor to pay?” she was right: How much do you freeloaders expect low-income Dorchester families to pay in sales taxes, subsidizing T rides for rich Boston College kids and downtown attorneys?
If the problem were temporary, if my T-dependent neighbors just needed a one-time handout, I’d throw a few bucks in their cup. But the MBTA has an addiction problem. It just keeps spending and spending and it can’t seem to stop.
Despite having the highest debt burden of any transportation system in America, the T plans to spend $161 million more this year than it takes in. It’s on track to keep spending itself into the red, hitting a projected annual loss of $308 million in 2016.

CHECK THIS OUT MR ANDERSON AND MS CHILTON:

And where is the money going? With 631 T staffers making $100,000 or more last year in salary and overtime, it’s not too hard to figure out. If you’re still not sure, just ask one of the folks on the amazing MBTA pension system, who may have retired as young as 41 with health-care benefits for life.
THERE GOES YOUR BEST IN THE COUNTRY BALONEY!

Boston's MBTA and Portland's TriMet, the similarities are shocking

The MBTA shelled out more than $863,000 last year to pay more than a dozen public relations and marketing staffers to promote the transit system, including spreading the news of possible fare hikes.
Barbara Moulton, the top marketing earner, was paid $111,757 last year as assistant general manager of customer communications and marketing, according to payroll records obtained by the Herald. Moulton oversees both the customer service and marketing divisions.
(Trimet shelled out a hell of a lot more than that!)

Scores of T bus and trolley operators raked in massive overtime last year — some pushing their take-home pay to $100,000 or more — by working extra shifts that put them behind the wheel for up to 14 consecutive hours, raising alarms over drowsy drivers.
“If it is not properly managed, you could see a risk,” said Stuart Spina, chairman of the T Riders Union. “I can imagine doing your regular shift and then the overtime ... if you have a trolley- or bus-load of passengers, you don’t want your operator to be nodding off.”

TRIMET WON'T RELEASE ANOTHER VIDEO

We would like to remind the Trimet managers of the general managers  WORDS to the Trimet Board of Directors.

Jana Toran calls me up

Chief Trimet counsel Jana Toran called me and told me that a response is forthcoming on my request for Fred's (and his pals) pension records.

I can barely stand the wait, will she say yes or will she say no?

Is this picture our Jana Toran, it looks like her and it came up in a search for her picture.

And what do you know, Trimet is NOT releasing the video, as usual, citing, "the ongoing investigation"
(they always have an excuse)
How is it that other transit districts have no problem releasing videos, even if the investigation is ongoing?

A million here, a million there

We're gonna cut your bus and raise your fare but at least we got this:

A broad funding package is paying for the project. The Portland Development Commission contributed $4 million in 2010, and TriMet is providing $1 million for habitat improvements as environmental mitigation credits it needs to proceed with the Portland-to-Milwaukie light-rail project.

BOJACK

Partners in crime

If it weren't already crystal clear where Tri-Met is coming from these days -- ripping out a perfectly good bus system and replacing it with an array of inconvenient and dangerous trains -- it's impossible to miss the message here. The Tri-Met general manager is going in front of the Portland City Club next week to speak on "Moving Forward While Cutting Back." And who is he bringing along to do some of his talking for him? A dandy dude from CH2M Hill.
Who is CH2M Hill? We'll give you a hint: they're not into bus maintenance. CH2M Hill is into real estate development and giant construction projects.
And therein lies the problem. Real estate developers want railroad tracks next to their apartment bunkers, just long enough to load in some tenants, flip the property, and move on to the next deal. They could care less how awful it is to ride the public buses and trains. They just want public money to make their lives "pencil out," and keep the lobster bisque flowing at the Arlington Club.
The future of Tri-Met is in bankruptcy. And you know what? CH2M Hill won't be there with them that day
