Jack Bogdanski commentaries
Rah rah, siss boom bah, here's how Portland's newspaper "covers" its dying transit system. The headline writers over there must start drinking at breakfast. "With WES leading the way" -- yes, one of the biggest transit flops in history is certainly a fitting image for Tri-Met these days. The subsidy per boarding ride on that thing is $15. But hey, they make it up in volume.

Rail project backlash gets mainstream attention
Here's a pretty decent summary of where the protests against the Mystery Train to Milwaukie (and other boondoggles) stand. Jim Redden of the Trib manages to report without slanting, unlike his rivals at Portland's monopoly daily newspaper.

We're never too broke for the condo developers
Just as Tri-Met is building
pointless new light rail while it radically slashes existing service,
now the City of Portland parks bureau will blow millions on the SoWhat greenway
while it closes facilities and lets existing parks rot. To
Portlandia's local government, shiny new is always better than
maintaining what we already have. It's no surprise that people who live
here because they like what we already have are keenly disappointed.

DRIVER GETS IN DISPUTE WITH DISPATCH
LIVE FROM SCANNER- A dispute between a passenger and driver occurred and the end result was the operator somehow got the guy off the bus and told dispatch "I never get any help from you, all you do is ask a whole bunch of questions so forget it"
He then hung up and the dispatcher couldn't raise the operator.
A road supervisor was sent to the operator.

(probably to do a 'fit for duty' check, I've experienced that before, do we get enough compensation for the abuse we take? HELL NO!)

Drivers threaten to walk off job over foul smell deriving from mouldy bus seats
Sounds familiar huh?
"Despite photographic evidence, showing mould growing all over the back seats, management has shown little interest in cleaning the seats which not only smell awful but are a health hazard to drivers and passengers,'' a spokesman for the bus driver's union the RTBU said.

TriMet--->the leader in everthing except TRANSIT
TriMet, Portland's regional public transit agency, will commission a
60-kilowatt solar installation featuring SolarWorld solar panels at the
South Terminus of the MAX green and yellow light-rail lines near
Portland State University in late February. The system, installed by REC
Solar, is the agency's first large-scale photovoltaic installation. In
addition to generating more than 64,000 kilowatt-hours of solar energy
each year and helping shield TriMet from rising utility rates, the
graceful, curvilinear design of the installation has been hailed as
public art by some local transit observers

Portland A-Foot
You’re nobody in Portland’s transit world until you’ve been criticized by Al Margulies. After yesterday’s post interviewing a citizen critic of TriMet’s union, Portland Afoot has joined that club. I respect Al, who does a lot of important reporting; we’ll take our knocks.
