What walkout taught us all

Phoenix's largest bus contractor, Veolia Transportation, and its drivers union have settled their differences. Barring new developments, Phoenix drivers (and those in Tempe) will return to work on Friday after six tumultuous days for residents who rely on public transit.

What have we learned?

That the interests of Valley residents were weighed during this strike only in terms of how their inconvenience could be leveraged to the advantage of one side or the other.

SERVICE CUTS? LAYOFFS? BUS DRIVER APPRECIATION DAY?

TRIMET HERE

Seems odd that is celebrating Bus Driver Appreciation Day, when any other day of the year is their Assault On Union Workers Day.

GIANT SQUID

TRANSIT CZAR LAYS OFF SOME NON UNION EMPLOYEES?

It would have been helpful to see WHAT POSITIONS are being whacked.
`````````````````````
What I’m about to say-- isn’t easy.  Yesterday, we completed a round of layoffs as we eliminated eight positions.  With a large budget shortfall, we needed to look at cost reductions and do all we can to maintain service on the street.  When I say “position” – it is really the people in those positions – our co-workers to whom we’re saying good bye.  This is a sad moment for many of us.  Personally, I know each and every one of the people we laid off and it is one of the hardest things I’ve done.  But for our agency to move forward, we must continue to focus on its financial health by realigning our resources.  The layoffs can be unsettling and I want to remind you that there is help available should you need it.  I appreciate everyone taking a moment to reflect on all of this and wish our co-workers well.
Interesting article from Canada concerning the CHURCH OF LIGHT RAIL
I'm all in favour of public transportation but it has to make sense. I can drive to work in 20 minutes but using the bus would require two transfers plus untold waiting time between connections.
I tried it once. After an hour I called a colleague to come pick me up at the Newton exchange because I wasn't prepared to wait another 15 minutes in the rain for the bus that would bring me to within a block of the parking lot in front of the Now office.
THE BUDGET MESS
This post was originally on Portland A-Foot and it spells out  CLEARLY why we are in a budget mess at Trimet and should be read by people that are interested in facts not rhetoric as our general manager is so fond of spewing:
The financial problem has been a long time in the making. Ask any employee of TriMet’s Training Department, and you can discover that this is a hole dug by TriMet management a long time ago. Three decades ago, full retirement was at age 62, with a 20 year vesting for Union employees. The pension was tiny. But there was the promise of improving seniority over time, and health care in retirement. Employees could retire early at age 55, but with a much-reduced pension — out of compassion for drivers who developed health problems and could no longer drive. It was hard to survive retirement at 55 with no social security until 62, and a tiny pension. TriMet is not part of PERS.
IN YOUR FACE
I got this letter from Trimet legal. At first I had no idea what this was supposed to mean.
After a couple minutes it came to me.
This is the response to the e-mail I sent Mary Festch wanting to know why I got charged $91 for a list of 11 retirements when the Cascade Policy Group got over a thousand employees facts for NOTHING!
She passed the buck (in pure bureaucratic style) to another bureaucrat in legal.
This is there response:
Excuse my language but there is no better way to illustrate my feelings on the topic.
TriMet: Budget Public Hearings
TRIMET WANTS $6000 FROM EACH UNION EMPLOYEE
Reader observes:
Al, are there about 2000 ATU members at TriMet?  If so, then if management wants to save 12 million from employee wages and benefits to balance the budget, my math says that they would have to take $6000 per employee to do so.  Fewer members, or a higher cost savings would result in a higher take away from each ATU member.
Michael Levine comments on the 'new' budget proposal
The continued disrespect from TriMet Management!
Last month TriMet increased fares for TriMet’s own “Honored Citizens”, TriMet’s most vulnerable LIFT paratransit customers and now on the table cuts to LIFT service – pay more and get less seemingly TriMet management’s goal…
Next month are we going to be asked to: on top of less service, having to pay more, are we going to be asked to drive the buses?
I for one am tire of supporting Neil McFarlane’s $220,000.00 Salary while receiving less and paying more. In addition, Neil has proven he does not always tell the truth thus is the service cuts and fare increases truly needed or are they so he and the other overpaid management at TriMet can continue receiving their enormous salaries
Alan Eisenberg comments on the new budget proposal
  • And now for Macfarclungs own words---Since then, the ATU delayed the scheduled arbitration date by four more months. No Neil, you violated the contract causing unfair labor practices(you cheated, you lied)and are looking to scapegoat the union for your management team's inabilities to negotiate by the rules and laws of the state and feds.
Trimet ministry of propaganda playing the media and public opinion like a Stradivarius
My comments:
""""In June of 2009 TriMet won Common Sense for Oregon's GOLDEN FLEECE AWARD for having the most expensive employee benefit package in the United States.""""
---->There has never been any evidence presented to back up any of those claims. Even if it WERE TRUE, we make $5.00 an hour LESS than other comparable transit districts. On a 40 hour week that saves Trimet $200 week/$800 a month REDUCING the cost for the 'golden fleece' health care from $1600 (which is what my blue cross through Trimet costs, I've seen the accounting) too $800/month.
It's no surprise that ALL THE MAJOR MEDIA (Including my pal Joe Rose) has chosen to ignore that IMPORTANT FACT.
Politicians keep playing games with our tax money
 The bill would increase the flow of highway aid to states by adjusting current spending levels to take into account inflation over the past several years. States would have greater discretion over how to spend the money, but the bill also would create a new set of performance and project eligibility requirements aimed at preventing waste and making sure national goals are met.
A credit assistance program that helps leverage private investment for transportation projects of national and regional significance would be increased tenfold to $1 billion. In the past, the program has been able to generate as much as $30 in private capital for every $1 in aid, Boxer has said.
The measure also would reduce the number of federal transportation programs by roughly two-thirds in an effort to eliminate duplication. Bicycle, pedestrian, safe routes to schools and rails-to-trails programs — which were targeted by Republicans — were preserved by moving them into a larger congestion mitigation program where they would have to compete with other programs for moneyFULL STORY HERE
The most expensive surface-running rail line now under construction is Portland’s Portland-Milwaukie light rail, which will cost $204 million per mile to construct as of the most recent estimates. TAKE A GOOD LOOK WHAT MACFARLANE+HIS BUSINESS CRONIES WANTS FOR THE GREATER PORTLAND AREA
PHOENIX — The full impact of a strike by about 900 bus drivers in Phoenix and nearby Tempe was felt for the first time Monday as the workweek began.
The drivers went on strike Saturday against Veolia Transportation over wages and benefit disputes. The two sides had been negotiating for nearly two years but couldn't reach a deal.
Veolia said a federal mediator has contacted Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1433, and both sides were scheduled to meet Tuesday.
Veolia is required to provide 60 percent service levels in the event of the strike and the company has been training and flying in drivers from out of state, according to The Arizona Republic. Service hovered around 15 percent of normal for bus routes Veolia operates in Phoenix as evening commutes began.
UNIONS FOUGHT HARD FOR THE 40 HOUR WORK WEEK
It's rather ironic indeed that the one thing that unions fought so hard for, the 40 hour work week, seems to be history for those that are actually working in union jobs.
TriMet is a good example. Almost every single run for full time operators is now more than 8 hours a day. It's not uncommon for drivers to work a 50 hour work week, actually that is the most common work shift.
Some shifts require drivers to be away from home 12 or more hours a  day.
Of course some drivers actually like the overtime, money is a very good motivator, but many drivers just want to work 8 hours and go home.
Unfortunately, that is not an option for many TriMet full time drivers.
And they can expect to  continue working long hard shifts.
It's cheaper for TriMet to work them to death than hire new employees that require health insurance etc.
 (God Bless America)
Veolia has also played a role in shaping HR 7, the House transportation bill put forward by GOP leadership. Through the law firm Patton Boggs, Veolia lobbied for measures that would accelerate the transfer of transit service to private operators, according to Sam Finkelstein, a spokesperson for the Transportation Equity Network, which organized the protest. A provision of the bill would reward transit agencies that privatize a portion of their service by offering increased capital funding [PDF, pages 322 and 323]. Veolia did not respond to requests to confirm or deny that the company lobbied for that provision.
TRIMET WAY OFF BASE AND WAY BEHIND THE TIMES
  1. After a visit to Seattles Metro is has become crystal clear just how far behind TRIMET has fallen in the world of transit.
  2. At metro, all the call stops are automated.
  3. The driver can use the BDS to make specialized announcements like "please move back".
  4. There are no pouches to deal with.
  5. There is virtually no punching transfers, and if you do need the punch it's attached to the fare box so drivers can't lose them and then get charged for losing it.
  6. There is the "ORCA" card system, ending fare collection.
  7. Buses are new and clean, and even the old buses are beautiful compared to ours.
  8. You get paid for filling out lost and found tickets.
  9. You get paid for filling out work cards.
  10. There is no fee for drivers for health insurance, granted the benefits are not exactly the same as ours.
  11. There are multiple uniform options, not just the heavy industrial outfits we are required to wear.
How does this transit district get to be called "a model for the country".
It's all propaganda that has no bearing in reality.
Why the MTA has a budget problem: The Central Subway-TRIMET
...The Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet), the regional transit agency that runs buses, commuter rail and light rail, faces a budget shortfall of up to $17 million next fiscal year. The Portland Bureau of Transportation, which manages the streetcar, faces a $16 million gap. Local officials are still crafting those budgets, but it’s virtually certain that leaders of a region long known for a commitment to multimodal transportation will have to increase fares and reduce service to balance budgets in 2013...
At the same time it works its way through seemingly intractable budget problems, TriMet is pursuing a massive expansion: A seven-mile, $1.5 billion light rail line to the suburb Milwaukie is scheduled to come online in 2015. That’s caused some observers to scratch their heads, wondering how the agency can have enough money for new projects but not enough to keep up existing operations. “They’re closing their eyes and jumping,” says Andersen. “They’re running on faith. And hopefully their faith is justified---it always has been in the past. I hope they’re right. I fear they’re wrong.”
Interesting how much money they will put into these obnoxious sports fans who shove their way onto the MAX without having the basic courtesy or the common sense to let others off first. They come on drunk and obnoxious and think they own it even though they rarely ride it. As I got off my bus this morning at 6th and Market, the rear door of the bus was lined up with this little patch of mud.  As the bus was standing room only, a few riders had to step off of the bus to let others off, so our only choice was to walk through the mud.
Next to the mud patch was a little sign that says to help protect the landscaping and not to walk on it.
What were we supposed to do?  All file out through the front door?  This is a brand new bus stop on the Transit Mall!  Shouldn't the size of a bus and the placement of the doors have been a consideration towards the design of the bus stop?  Would a MAX stop be built with this where the door would be located?
They say they have the 9,378 signatures needed with nearly another 2,500 to spare, and so it appears that there will be a public vote in September on Clackamas County's participation in Tri-Met's badly misguided Mystery Train to Milwaukie project. Tri-Met continues to say that it will sue to force the county to pay $25 million toward the rail construction, even if the ballot measure passes and the county is barred by its voters from playing along. That ought to be tied up in the courts for many years.
But first, of course, the pushers of the train will do what they can to invalidate the signatures that the opponents have worked so hard to gather. The vote against the MAX will be another in a long string of embarrassments for the Portland transit agency, and it would like to avoid it if it can.
JUPITER AND VENUS FROM HILLSBORO TRANSIT CENTER
THE BASIS OF THE CHARGES IN CASE AGAINST TRIMET
(a) Defendants and each of them established and approved systematic bus route schedules that were too tight, which they knew or should have known would cause driver safety lapses.
(b) Defendants and each of them established, approved and refused to change unsafe
left-side outer rear view mirrors throughout Tri Met bus system, including bus No. 2514. Defendants and each of them knew or should have known these mirrors created a hazardous driver blind spot during left turns.
GITTINGS/SALE VS TRIMET
Civil case to begin October 1, 2012
KTP sues Trimet et al. for Sale and Gittings wrongful deaths
Problem: On April 24, 2010, Trimet set in motion what it has called the worst accident in its history. Driver Sandi L. Day made an illegal sweeping left turn in downtown Portland from the far right of two-lane, one-way Glisan Street. As she turned south onto Broadway, she drove her bus through a group of five unsuspecting young adults who were crossing Broadway in a signaled, protected crosswalk with the walk light. Two newlyweds were thrown clear; two young women died at the scene after the bus ran over them; and one young man survived with critical injuries after he was pinned behind the right front wheel of the bus.
I PAID $91 DOLLARS FOR THIS?
This is a somewhat surprising list!
There are actually two bus operators on this list?
How is that possible?
$75 for each year after 10, so 30 years would be $2,250, so 40 years would be $3000, so how the hell does a bus operator get $4,000 a month?
Why does a lists of 11 names qualify for a fee of  $91.00?
What a freaking rip off!
ISSUE-PEOPLE WALKING INTO LIFTS
Discussion and Updates: Until mechanical/electronic warnings can be devised or improved, the first step should involve training for Operators regarding awareness and where their efforts should be focused while operating the lift device. Tommye Gilbreath would like to meet with stakeholders about this issue.
Take That, Portland: Seattle Uses Transit More......
A new set of reports by the Sightline Institute concludes that despite Portland’s reputation as a “transit powerhouse,” Seattle commuters actually use transit significantly more often than Portland commuters, including not just people who live and work inside city limits but people who live outside the city and commute here.
Overall, 21 percent of commuters who work in Seattle (regardless of where they live) commute by transit, compared to 12 percent in Portland.
DEBT SERVICE SINKING MBTA-TRIMET NEXT?
In an interview before the hearing, MBTA General Manager Jonathan Davis said he doesn’t have the authority to ask the state for more money, and later he explained to the crowd that 30 cents of every dollar spent goes to debt payment.
“We’re probably the most highly leveraged transit currently in the U.S.,” Davis said. The majority of the $5.2 billion in debt owed was borrowed to pay for public transit improvements mandated by the Big Dig, according to Davis – such as the Silver Line. Now that debt threatens to crumble the public transit system in place today. At another point in the hearing, Davis said, “Right now we can’t afford the transit system we have.”
Hello Mary;
This is Al M, the guy with the blog.
I have a question for you please.
Recently, I have been filing requests for public information regarding certain financial issues over at Trimet Legal.
I have been charged for this information.
Then it came to my attention that the following group:
http://oregoncapitolnews.com/govdocs/metro/trimet-salaries/
received similar information AND WAS NOT CHARGED.
I would like to know Mary why am I being charged and not them?
Thank you for your time, hopefully it won't cost me anything.
ECONOMISTS SAY TRANSPORTATION BILLS DO NOT CREATE JOBS
WASHINGTON — The lure of roads, bridges, buses and trains isn’t enough anymore to drive an expensive transportation bill through Congress. So to round up votes, congressional leaders are pitching the bills as the hottest thing around these days: job generators.
But do they really create more jobs? Not really, is the answer from many economists. The bills would simply shift investment that was creating jobs elsewhere in the economy to transportation industries. That means different jobs, but not necessarily additional ones.
 Highway bills pitched by lawmakers as job generators, but are they really? Economists say no. - The Washington Post
SOMETHING IS SERIOUSLY WRONG OUT HERE
I've been listening to dispatch lately and the number of threats coming at drivers lately is unreal! I've had another three in less than two hours!
Lots of people messing up buses lately
Trimet should consider having these signs placed on buses:
ANOTHER CLASSIC PIECE FROM DR JEFF
As a 21st-Century commuter, you’ve already downloaded all the available transit apps to your handset or personal computing device. You’ve got apps that tell you what time your bus is going to be there, and, well, another app that tells you when your bus is going to be there. What you’re really anxiously awaiting is – you guessed it – the update to the app that tells you when your bus is going to be there, with fancy new graphics and a button that lets you tweet when your bus is going to be there.
FREE AT LAST
Although technically not retired, I will not have to drive any bus until the end of the month, and that will be only 1 day. Then another month until I have to drive again! And even after that it will only be one day a week till the end of May. Come June it will be over for me, if everything goes as planned in my life.
God what a relief to have my life back. I stayed part time because during the line training it became obvious to me that I would never last as full time driver here.
The shifts are too long, the work hours are too crazy, and the management of questionable ethics, even back then.
MOVE TO FLOOD TRIMET WITH WORK CARDS
I wanted to know if I was the only one that saw that.  Did you also notice "our" leader seemed unsure about talking about "our" issues?  Not really knowing what to say about "our" increasing need for health care.  Unacceptable.  Anyway, there is something I need to say, did anyone notice the new work cards?  I think Trimet heard "us" and is trying to get ahead of "us" on this issue, so they can say, "no one reported anything"  So if everyone can fill the card out (ask your station agent or check your pouch) on "every" single bus you get on, "we" can finally put the pressure back on them, to get those dirty busses cleaned, it's been a year plus.  Since "our" so-called leadership refuses to take up this issue, it is up to "us" to take care of "our" own health and safety.  PASS THE WORD AROUND!!!!  LETS HIT THEM WITH HUNDREDS OF THESE A DAY, EVERYDAY!!!!
