Because we still have to keep service on the street! This is a question I hear a lot – and it is best answered in two parts: 1) our day to day operations; and 2) our administrative staff.

BOY DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR

The biggest problems with the service for riders (well, at least 20 of those surveyed) seems to be inconsistent enforcement—something that has been an issue since day one—with passengers complaining of being issued summonses after being unable to buy a ticket from a broken street machine. For example:

The headline is right: TriMet does need new, strong leadership (TriMet needs strong leadership, new vigor, March 1). The problem is the governor will never, ever make it happen.
We need a board of directors that isn't a lapdog to the general manager, who supposedly works for the board. We need a board that actually represents the public, that works for the public and most importantly, acts in the public's interest.

SAM FRASER

Mass transit exists as much for providing transportation as it does for making a city more green or promoting business growth.
I found it disturbing that your Feb. 16 cover story, "Rail fight hits the gas," failed to mention a significant reason for opposition to new light rails: In the face of yearly cuts in service and fare increases, TriMet cannot afford to build light rails AND offer the same level of service to its riders.

I've had quite a few people attempt to convince me not to leave Trimet.

I want to thank those folks for those kind thoughts, but I can't provide my energy to this organization any longer.

I'm in a position that allows me freedom of choice and I want to take advantage of that and move my energy to more enlightening endeavors.

It's no longer any fun being a bus driver at TriMet.

WHO IS THE ENEMY?

Who Is the Enemy? Unions or Executives? – this ain't livin'

Unionbusting was a major theme in 2011; numerous companies moaned to the media about how they were having trouble meeting their costs because of those pesky unions. Some went as far as threatening (and declaring) bankruptcy over union negotiations, positioning labour as the enemy; they’d have to shut down and kill hundreds or thousands of jobs all because of the greedy union representatives. Meanwhile, executives continued to pocket significant salaries and authorize large payouts of money for those unionbusting lawyers they used at the negotiating table, those public relations officials charged with making the union look bad.

They must really be in trouble

I clearly indicated on the little box on the signup sheet they I do NOT want to be called for extra work.
Sorry Trimet, greed works for most people but not on me.

HUMANITY ON WHEELS

I gotta tell ya it was one of the weirdest events I have ever attended.
More like theater, or poetry reading, or story telling.
The subject matter was Trimet, and some of the things that happen on the system.
I just observed, as did Jessica Buccereli from Trimet.
A couple of people asked me to go up and make some sort of presentation, but this venue is definitely not me.

I don't 'rehearse' any of my scripts and every single one of my movies is just showing "real life", completely opposite from this event.

Didn't get to say Hi to Dr Jeff, a quick hello to Michael Anderson (who had nothing to say to me), a drink with Michael Levine, my favorite activist, and then just hung out with my little group of "pals" which included Max, Jason, --- and her husband Michael.

I will work on the footage when I get time, will put up some raw footage soon.

HUGE VICTORY FOR LIFT DRIVERS IN FLORIDA

Is TriMet also breaking the law regarding our LIFT drivers?

under an appellate ruling that a company that employs them violated federal labor laws when it reduced workers' hours without negotiating with a transit union.
Officials of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1577 said the ruling, issued by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals on March 2, could result in back pay of more than $2 million for paratransit drivers who work for Palm Beach Metro Transportation. The company is one of several contracted by Palm Tran to provide paratransit service through Palm Tran Connection.

 Court ruling says company wrongly cut paratransit bus drivers' hours

TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT WHERE TRIMET IS HEADED

The fact is, despite this successful record, social dissatisfaction with TransMilenio is nothing new. Public approval of the system began to drop in 2004, with people complaining about crowding and fares. In March of that year passengers protested poor service that resulted largely from ongoing repairs to three of the busways [PDF, p. 18]. In April 2008 passengers again went on strike over the system's service, this time citing overcrowded buses, low frequencies, and a lack of alternatives [PDF, p. 25-26]. Traffic models from this time suggested that without steps to increase the city's public transportation coverage, congestion would reach a standstill by - you guessed it - 2012 [PDF, p. 17].
The problem is a complicated one, writes Hutchinson, but it boils down to several core sources. The first is the city's decades-long, unrequited obsession with building a metro system that would cost much more than bus-rapid transit and cover far less of the city. Another is a lack of government subsidies that hampers the system's ability to expand and address its problems.

Tri-Met's money, five years later

Here's a flashback to 2007 that makes pretty interesting reading today.
"There is a finite supply of operational funding, and anyone who says otherwise is not telling the truth," Newman said.
Also, TriMet is under pressure to invest in bus service to reverse a decline in spending, frequency and ridership in recent years. Some transit advocates fear that devoting all the increase in payroll taxes to rail projects will leave bus service out in the cold.

"First and foremost, bus service should be improved," said Jim Howell, a former TriMet planner and member of the Association of Oregon Rail and Transit Advocates.
Now, isn't that a cruel joke.

NO TRANSPARENCY AT TRIMET UNLESS YOU GOT PLENTY OF $$$$

Macfarlane issued a PROCLAMATION expressing his sadness over the "termination" of some non union employees.

I found it quite interesting and sent an email over to the person who sent the news release asking for a list of the positions that were eliminated.

She referred me to Trimet Legal (uh huh) who wanted me to do a REQUEST FOR PUBLIC RECORDS in order to get that information.

We already know that Trimet Legal Department is operated by THIEVES who take great pleasure in charging exorbitant fees to provide public information.

So here we have the career bureaucrat Macfarlane, a man who has been bald faced lying to the public about our benefits, (we have been paying for our benefits for over a year, this fact has not been told to the public)making a proclamation about some non union employees that have been laid off.

BUT WE HAVE NO WAY TO VERIFY THAT ANY OF THAT EVEN ACTUALLY HAPPENED.

LISTEN UP MACFARLANE+ BIG SHOT KNOWLES

Now that the transit union and management have kissed and made up, it’s time for Halifax Regional Municipality to grow up and start taking public transit seriously.

That a union and a municipality would allow buses and ferries to be off the road for more than the biblical 40 days and 40 nights indicates some pretty wrong-headed ideas about public transit.

In HRM, the assumption seems to be that public transit is provided to a certain group of people who, for whatever reason, don’t or can’t drive. Broadly speaking, this group includes the poor, the infirm, students, minimum-wage workers and the elderly.

Because they are not the mainstream middle class paying the bulk of the property and commercial taxes, transit users are marginali

What walkout taught us all

Phoenix's largest bus contractor, Veolia Transportation, and its drivers union have settled their differences. Barring new developments, Phoenix drivers (and those in Tempe) will return to work on Friday after six tumultuous days for residents who rely on public transit.

What have we learned?

That the interests of Valley residents were weighed during this strike only in terms of how their inconvenience could be leveraged to the advantage of one side or the other.

TRANSIT CZAR LAYS OFF SOME NON UNION EMPLOYEES?

It would have been helpful to see WHAT POSITIONS are being whacked.
`````````````````````
What I’m about to say-- isn’t easy.  Yesterday, we completed a round of layoffs as we eliminated eight positions.  With a large budget shortfall, we needed to look at cost reductions and do all we can to maintain service on the street.  When I say “position” – it is really the people in those positions – our co-workers to whom we’re saying good bye.  This is a sad moment for many of us.  Personally, I know each and every one of the people we laid off and it is one of the hardest things I’ve done.  But for our agency to move forward, we must continue to focus on its financial health by realigning our resources.  The layoffs can be unsettling and I want to remind you that there is help available should you need it.  I appreciate everyone taking a moment to reflect on all of this and wish our co-workers well.
Interesting article from Canada concerning the CHURCH OF LIGHT RAIL
I'm all in favour of public transportation but it has to make sense. I can drive to work in 20 minutes but using the bus would require two transfers plus untold waiting time between connections.
I tried it once. After an hour I called a colleague to come pick me up at the Newton exchange because I wasn't prepared to wait another 15 minutes in the rain for the bus that would bring me to within a block of the parking lot in front of the Now office.
THE BUDGET MESS
This post was originally on Portland A-Foot and it spells out  CLEARLY why we are in a budget mess at Trimet and should be read by people that are interested in facts not rhetoric as our general manager is so fond of spewing:
The financial problem has been a long time in the making. Ask any employee of TriMet’s Training Department, and you can discover that this is a hole dug by TriMet management a long time ago. Three decades ago, full retirement was at age 62, with a 20 year vesting for Union employees. The pension was tiny. But there was the promise of improving seniority over time, and health care in retirement. Employees could retire early at age 55, but with a much-reduced pension — out of compassion for drivers who developed health problems and could no longer drive. It was hard to survive retirement at 55 with no social security until 62, and a tiny pension. TriMet is not part of PERS.
IN YOUR FACE
I got this letter from Trimet legal. At first I had no idea what this was supposed to mean.
After a couple minutes it came to me.
This is the response to the e-mail I sent Mary Festch wanting to know why I got charged $91 for a list of 11 retirements when the Cascade Policy Group got over a thousand employees facts for NOTHING!
She passed the buck (in pure bureaucratic style) to another bureaucrat in legal.
This is there response:
Excuse my language but there is no better way to illustrate my feelings on the topic.
UNFUCKING BELIEVABLE!
TriMet: Budget Public Hearings
TRIMET WANTS $6000 FROM EACH UNION EMPLOYEE
Reader observes:
Al, are there about 2000 ATU members at TriMet?  If so, then if management wants to save 12 million from employee wages and benefits to balance the budget, my math says that they would have to take $6000 per employee to do so.  Fewer members, or a higher cost savings would result in a higher take away from each ATU member.
ATU GIVES GREEN LIGHT TO LATEST FEDERAL TRANSIT BILL
Washington, DC – The Senate transportation bill sets the right course for transportation policy, giving states more flexibility in how they spend federal money and rejecting privatization provisions says the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) in applauding the Senate passage of Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21).
Michael Levine comments on the 'new' budget proposal
The continued disrespect from TriMet Management!
Last month TriMet increased fares for TriMet’s own “Honored Citizens”, TriMet’s most vulnerable LIFT paratransit customers and now on the table cuts to LIFT service – pay more and get less seemingly TriMet management’s goal…
Next month are we going to be asked to: on top of less service, having to pay more, are we going to be asked to drive the buses?
I for one am tire of supporting Neil McFarlane’s $220,000.00 Salary while receiving less and paying more. In addition, Neil has proven he does not always tell the truth thus is the service cuts and fare increases truly needed or are they so he and the other overpaid management at TriMet can continue receiving their enormous salaries
Alan Eisenberg comments on the new budget proposal
  • And now for Macfarclungs own words---Since then, the ATU delayed the scheduled arbitration date by four more months. No Neil, you violated the contract causing unfair labor practices(you cheated, you lied)and are looking to scapegoat the union for your management team's inabilities to negotiate by the rules and laws of the state and feds.
Trimet ministry of propaganda playing the media and public opinion like a Stradivarius
My comments:
""""In June of 2009 TriMet won Common Sense for Oregon's GOLDEN FLEECE AWARD for having the most expensive employee benefit package in the United States.""""
---->There has never been any evidence presented to back up any of those claims. Even if it WERE TRUE, we make $5.00 an hour LESS than other comparable transit districts. On a 40 hour week that saves Trimet $200 week/$800 a month REDUCING the cost for the 'golden fleece' health care from $1600 (which is what my blue cross through Trimet costs, I've seen the accounting) too $800/month.
It's no surprise that ALL THE MAJOR MEDIA (Including my pal Joe Rose) has chosen to ignore that IMPORTANT FACT.
Politicians keep playing games with our tax money
 The bill would increase the flow of highway aid to states by adjusting current spending levels to take into account inflation over the past several years. States would have greater discretion over how to spend the money, but the bill also would create a new set of performance and project eligibility requirements aimed at preventing waste and making sure national goals are met.
A credit assistance program that helps leverage private investment for transportation projects of national and regional significance would be increased tenfold to $1 billion. In the past, the program has been able to generate as much as $30 in private capital for every $1 in aid, Boxer has said.
The measure also would reduce the number of federal transportation programs by roughly two-thirds in an effort to eliminate duplication. Bicycle, pedestrian, safe routes to schools and rails-to-trails programs — which were targeted by Republicans — were preserved by moving them into a larger congestion mitigation program where they would have to compete with other programs for moneyFULL STORY HERE
TRIMET IS THE "MOST EXPENSIVE RAIL PROJECT IN THE USA"
The most expensive surface-running rail line now under construction is Portland’s Portland-Milwaukie light rail, which will cost $204 million per mile to construct as of the most recent estimates. That’s expensive, but it includes a significant bridge over the Willamette River and a series of elevated sections.
TAKE A GOOD LOOK WHAT MACFARLANE+HIS BUSINESS CRONIES WANTS FOR THE GREATER PORTLAND AREA
PHOENIX — The full impact of a strike by about 900 bus drivers in Phoenix and nearby Tempe was felt for the first time Monday as the workweek began.
The drivers went on strike Saturday against Veolia Transportation over wages and benefit disputes. The two sides had been negotiating for nearly two years but couldn't reach a deal.
Veolia said a federal mediator has contacted Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1433, and both sides were scheduled to meet Tuesday.
Veolia is required to provide 60 percent service levels in the event of the strike and the company has been training and flying in drivers from out of state, according to The Arizona Republic. Service hovered around 15 percent of normal for bus routes Veolia operates in Phoenix as evening commutes began.
Good Luck saving what was to be ALL OF OUR FUTURES. I only wish this group would FOCUS ON THE REAL ISSUES as much as you do the deceptive love hate relationship between members, EBoard & Management. Once the contract is settled, those relationships will mellow.
