THE IRONY OF IT ALL!

Maybe I am a little weird, but I do enjoy listening in to the dispatch control center when I can.
To me its entertainment beyond any book, any movie, any lecture.
I myself can't believe how much I enjoy it.
Maybe its because I know exactly how it feels to be in the shoes of these operators and know many of the people that I hear.
I'm completely fascinated by it, its strange.
And the irony is they tried so hard to stop me from doing it.
If they had just let me continue seeing the acid reports none of this dispatch stuff would have even happened. But they shut down my access to the incident reports, hence I started looking for new ways to see what was going on out here.
I knew things were a mess out there.
I gotta tell ya though, its a bigger mess out there than I imagined.

Mr. Hunt,
I want to congratulate you on single handedly destroying what little faith “we” have in your leadership. You’ve had done something that management “expected” you to do, “sell “us” out. In your latest “lay-down” tactic, you’ve compromised “our” position, now, and for “our” future. In your time since the contract expired, here is what “you’ve” accomplished:
· A lawsuit for unfair labor practice, success, ultimately what will this mean? Who knows?
· Informationals, failed, many times over.
· Challenge Trimet, in board meetings, failure, many times over.
· NOTHING ELSE, of any consequence.
Trimet doesn’t need to do a thing. They already know that you will implode. While you are using the same old augments, they laugh at every attempt you make to disrupt their process. As a leader, you have totally failed all those that put any type of faith in your administration. All the tough talk that I had heard from you and the other paid employee was nice to hear, but ultimately when the going got tough, your administration laid down, sad.

 TriMet actually has a slightly larger annual budget than the city of Portland.  That means that McFarland and his merry band of sock puppets control more public funds than Mayor Sam and the commissioners.  And guess who is elected, and who is not?

CONFESSIONS OF A SOON TO BE RETIRED BUS DRIVER

I never made any mom fold up her stroller! Once in a while I would mention it or ask that they go as far back as possible with it but I never made an issue about it. And I always felt guilty if the mom started messing with it.These poor moms are trying to survive on our crappy bus system as it is, I had no intention of making their lives more miserable.
The idea that the stroller is going to go flying through the windshield would require a moron behind the wheel of the bus. I never had one incident with a baby stroller going anywhere while the bus was in operation.

I always let bicycles come inside the bus if there was room.
If the bus was once an hour I made room for bicycles to come inside the bus.
The idea that a bicycle can turn into a flying projectile is absurd and you'd have to be a idiot bus driver to make that happen!

When you finally get to retirement

You'll find the people that are working in the office dealing with all the retirement issues are extremely nice and helpful.

Most everybody I met working in the offices of Trimet were very nice people, at least to my face.

I never had a problem with any particular manager, on a personal level that is.
The station managers and the assistant station managers were basically following orders from above, that means Shelly or Hayden.

Local 1505 bus operators are experiencing an irritant that affects their ability to drive. This symptom bothers the sinuses to the point where it is hard to breath and causes nausea.
If your local has experienced these or other problems with the New Flyer buses, please contact Local 1505. They are particularly interested to know if anyone was able to find the source of the problem and what, if anything, can be done about it.

Just finished your latest "rant' on your blog.  Great Post!

Have you noticed that being a bus driver is a form of punishment at TriMet?  I don't know what the situation was with Gail in which she was no longer the drug test lady, but she wasn't terminated, she became a bus operator.

Steve Gxxxxxxxx wasn't fired for his alleged sexual harassment, he became a bus operator.


And let's not forget about our friends at light rail, if you screw up there, guess what happens?  You go back to driving a bus.

And for further punishment, if you are full time, they force you to work overtime since there are few 8 hour runs available.


Management sure has high regards for what we do.  (or in your case, what you used to do)

I have just  been informed by one of my more reliable pals that it is not necessary to work my "one day full time". I still have my birthday and floaters even though Trimet rips off its part time employees by taking away their time off in order to take the "promotion" (from my point of view its a promotion to the end of a reasonable life style) My new plan is to use my birthday (alternate) and not work the one day of hell.


The truth is I never really fit into the Trimet culture, I was definitely Trimet counter culture.
Being treated as chattel as a number and not a human being is not something that I take well to. I knew immediately after undergoing the brutal 'line training' that full time here was not something I would ever be,  the brutality of driving a bus for 12 hours is not something I imagined even existed!


I maintained my sanity and my individuality through my blogging and writing.

Operator runs light/MAX -supervisor report


I had received a page earlier about this incident. I received a call from dispatch at approximately 18:00 to make contact with this Operator, do a "Fit Test", submit a report to 9906 and to get information on the incident.

I met with the Operator at S.W. 107th and Beaverton-Hillsdale Hwy. at 18:17. I asked the Operator if I could talk to him off the bus and he complied. I asked him if everything was OK, was he feeling OK? I did not smell anything and he didn't slur any words and I felt he was safe to continue. I asked him what happened? The Operator stated that as he was approaching the light it was yellow and he continued through. The Operator stated he did not know how long it had been "Yellow". I explained to him that we "Do not run yellow lights, especially when they are stale. I also emphasized that his actions could of resulted in severe consequences since we interact with the trains in down town. He was sincere in his apology and stated "I will never do that again." My last comment to him was that it is best to error on the side of caution. I instructed the Operator to contact dispatch at the end of his shift and to do a report of the incident.

Here is reason number 5 to fill out work cards and acid numbers for issues dealing with the "DIRTY BUS" issues.
As Brother Fung shows in his continuing struggle to show that Trimet cares for the public's well being, he discovered visible mold on the bus.  In an effort to bring an awareness to the health problems "we" face on a daily basis, he, myself and "others" try in an effort to get either Trimet or the union (in name only) to take steps to protect the general public and operators of bus/train.  Both have failed "us" miserably.  I understand Trimet's position, "if the public doesn't know about it, it doesn't exist.

Something screwy with the Oregonian comments again

I can never tell what's going on with the Oregonian and me, I get banned there from time to time and apparently I am banned again. Not really important to me that they take my comments or not but I do want to respond to a comment made By Michael Anderson about the retirement being possible at 55 years old with 10 years in.

I was told that you could only receive benefits after 10 years in at 58 years of age but according to Anderson I am incorrect and he offers THIS EVIDENCE. (pg 132)

So basically I stayed three more years than I needed to? Damn!

I was watching the 10 pm KPTV news and CTRAN had already released the on board video of the fatal crash between the bus and the the 11 year old.

WTF is the matter with TRIMET TRANSPORTATION DISTRICT?

They seem to be the only transit district in the country that does not release video evidence when something happens!

The Union recently learned that TriMet may not have paid employees the reward payment for testing negative for reasonable suspicion (probable cause) and post accident alcohol and drug tests. Pursuant to the January 17, 1995 Alcohol and Drug Testing Policy Reward Payment Agreement, any employee who tests negative for a reasonable suspicion and/or post accident drug test is eligible to receive $100 or run/days work pay, whichever is greater. If you tested negative for these tests and were not paid the reward, contact your Union Representative. You will need to establish that you were tested, tested negative and did not receive the reward payment. This only applies to reasonable suspicion (probable cause) and post accident tests. It does not apply to random alcohol and drug tests.

The reporting of the SIP ULP outcome at this late date (April 26) is striking in it's lack of transparency.

This particular ULP decision is several months old..reporting on it now is disingenuous..it demonstrates clear   disregard for truth and accountability by TriMet management.

TriMet staff used to sit in the Board audience with members of the public. It appears the "rules" have indeed changed. TriMet staff all line up and sit behind Neil--looks defensive and desperate..sad.

The total failure of our mainstream media

Every single news source in the Portland area, and more than a handful from out of the area covered that story.

But was there any coverage of Occupy Portland's action at the Trimet board meeting? NOPE!
Was there any coverage of OPAL's excellent presentation to the board of directors regarding the Trimet budget? NOPE.

The news is what the media decides is news, the rest you don't get to know.

Once you have become an official nominee, you may also speak about your campaign at the ATU Retiree Chapter meeting which will be on June 6, 2012. To do so, you must contact the Retirees' Financial Secretary, Virginia Carlyle at and request to be placed on the agenda for the Chapter meeting.
Please remember that Retiree members are only allowed to vote on the three top Union positions of President, Vice President and Financial Secretary. Therefore, only candidates for those three positions will be allowed to speak.

Good comment on the budget at Portland Transport

I visited the SMART terminus at the Wilsonville end of WES today and saw posters forthrightly stating that only registered service dogs were allowed on SMART buses; companion animals offering psychological support are not compliant with American with Disabilities Act standards and are forbidden.
Is there a line item in TriMet's budget to enforce stated policy that pets aboard must be in cages? On the 77 out by Edgefield yesterday a couple of old drunks got on with some sort of big mongrel Doberman cross--I felt sorry for the dog!
I have seen dogs with their dirty behinds plastered on seats where people are supposed to sit, and smelled others wafting various stinks and allergies. Further malign influences are easily imagined.
Operators give the impression that they do not like such boarders, but TriMet refuses to back them up. I spoke with TriMet about it a while back, but they intended to do nothing.
Maybe they should just charge the critters a separate fare; that would make it a budget item.
