(Even the arbitrator is skeptical of Trimet funding projections. We all know they lie, which is why McFührer is so intent on using propaganda in order to distort the public's view on the matter)

HERO BUS DRIVER ED RAY DIES!

Opticom!

To take advantage of Opticom traffic signal priority treatments at 39th & Hawthorne, the westbound stop for Line 14-Hawthorne was recently moved from NS (adjacent to Jiffy Lube) to FS (adjacent to Fred Meyer). This move is expected to greatly help reduce delays at this intersection.

Real Trimet public relations planning

I just got a call from the General Manager's office. They will be announcing to the public/media the early opening of Interstate MAX next Tuesday, September 16th at 1pm in the afternoon.

Real Trimet incident reports

Three conditions in the external restrooms at St. Johns Racquet Club, 7519 N. Burlington Ave, are unacceptable in my opinion and the opinion of many operators who use them.

First of all, while I can't confirm that it is a TriMet employee(s) doing this there is ball-point pen graffiti repeatedly showing up on the walls in both restrooms. These restrooms are accessible with our key and to the best of my knowledge we are the main users of this facility. I have observed graffiti referencing internal TriMet matters in the past so I am suspicious that a/some employees may be writing on the walls.

Real Trimet incident reports

->Comment=Two weeks ago I took one of your supervisors that was working on 6th and Taylor and showed him the bus stop on Main St. in between 4th and 5th heading west, next to the Multnomah County Court House. I showed him the tree that is just to the east of the covered bench. What he saw was how worn away the roots of this tree are because your bus driver insist on stopping their bus so that the front door is just to the west edge of the covered bench, which puts the back door directly in line with this tree and its roots.

Talk about rude?

Trimet adventures-episode 1

Today I hit the Trimet system as a private citizen, finally having the right to do what ordinary citizens can do but Trimet bus drivers cannot. These will be a new series of on scene films, this time out of uniform and as a rider.

Rather than the one really long episode they are broken down into segments. As with all my material most of it is boring, but there are some real gems within the body of these movies.

TRIMET MANAGEMENT-be advised that this is PROPRIETARY MATERIAL WHICH I HOLD COPYRIGHT TOO! You do not have permission to use it in any sort of disciplinary procedure. If I want to make a complaint with MY MATERIAL I will. You do not have my permission to use it against anyone, ever!

TriMet transparency

Regarding Joseph Rose's informative May 13 article about TriMet employee health care ("Is TriMet about to drive over a cliff?"): Though a minority of TriMet employees (management) and The Oregonian have enormous access to the public, the majority of TriMet employees, the union members, have hardly any access.

I'm a bus rider. I've talked to some of the drivers, and there is more to this issue than has been reported by TriMet management or The Oregonian. As a public organization in a democratic society, TriMet should feature the union side of the story on its website, next to the management's story. TriMet has done a great job of organizing hearings where the public can comment on fare increases and schedule changes. We need forums where management, union members and the public can express their opinions and listen to each other. Maybe that will help resolve the issue.

How about it, TriMet management?

Confessions of an ex Trimet bus driver-checking fares

I never checked fares.
Why you may ask?
Because I was witness to too many incorrect transfers being given out to riders.
Incorrect day codes, incorrect times, incorrect zones.
The amount of operator errors is much larger than people think.
As far as the MAX tickets, I could not read them.
It would require me having each passenger stop, hold it close, and have me read it.
I also  did not see the difference between the passes and the tickets.
They all looked the same.

I really felt that riders get a bad deal from Trimet.
They deal with broken fare machines, incorrect transfers given by operators, and fare boxes that don't count correctly.

Because of all this mess with the Trimet fare system, I only pretended to check the fares.
I was happy to give Trimet riders a break.

Only in the very beginning of my employment with Trimet did I take the fare system seriously. After a couple of years I learned it was a joke and a rip off for Trimet riders.

CLASSIC DISPATCH

Am I going to get yelled at again?

Confessions of a ex Trimet bus driver-giving transfers

I always gave all zone transfers with at least 2 hours from the end of the line.
It's not laziness that prompted me to do that.
I gave out the ALL ZONES for a couple of reasons, first of all, and most importantly, the fare boxes were wrong.
Somebody would put in 2 one dollar bills and several coins.
The counter would show $2.25, I would give them a 2 zone transfer.
2 minutes after they sat down another quarter would drop through the fare box.
I had one too many incidents of this probably 3 years into my working at Trimet.
The benefit of the doubt always goes to the riders.

In regards to the 2 hour transfer.
How could Trimet management justify (of course I know they don't justify anything because they don't have too) giving a rider who lives on a route that gets once an hour service a one hour transfer when other riders live in areas that have 3-4 buses an hour get the same deal?
How is that transit equity?
I implemented OPAL's campaign for a fair transfer before OPAL suggested it.

Chasing people down the MAX light rail tracks

Actually its the FED's that are partially to blame for TRIMET'S problems

Whereas the federal government was willing to cover more than half of the costs of a $523 million light rail expansion to Pittsburgh’s North Shore — opened in March — it can do nothing to cover the agency’s $64 million operating deficit expected for next year because of Congressionally imposed rules about what Washington can and cannot pay for.
The counterintuitive result is that cities that are doing well economically are able to pay for improved transit services whereas those with many economic problems — the ones where transit is often needed most — are left to cut operations dramatically. Thus regional inequities are reinforced.

TriMet Bus drivers that walk the walk

Some driver's have more feeling than other drivers regarding passengers. Then some go the extra mile for passengers.

When A rider put his monthly pass into the fare box (because most UP TO DATE transit systems have passengers SWIPE passes into a reader) the rider accidentally put his pass into the cash side of the fare box.

Most drivers would have explained the procedure for dealing with the bureaucracy and let the riders deal with it themselves, THIS DRIVER got out of his bus, went over to the MAX vending machine, and bought the rider a new pass.

The driver had to deal with the bureaucracy to get the money back, and it was quite an ordeal I understand.

That is remarkable, and I know of very few drivers would would do such an act of kindness for a stranger.

TriMet: Ridership continues to grow
TriMet ridership continues to rise | TriMet Media

WES- 1700 weekday riders...divided by 32 trains (8 trains in each direction morning and afternoon, 16 morning and 16 evening trains)...

Average of 53 riders per train. That's impressive - FOR A BUS.

Lately TriMet/P&W has been running all trains as two-car trains. So...each "train" (car) has 80 seats, so 160 seats for a two car train. That's an average of...33% load factor per train!

What's worse...each Colorado Railcar DMU has three engines - two just to move the train, one for onboard electric (HVAC). Each bus has...well, one engine. The engines on the WES train I believe are 600 horsepower; on a bus it's closer to 300.

So TriMet is burning fuel for up to six engines to run at one time...for 53 riders? (And it takes two employees versus the one bus driver...)

I forgot, rail is ALWAYS more efficient...ALWAYS.(via Erik H)

RUSSIA TAKES OVER #2 SPOT

Here is an actual supervisory report about ME! (they had the wrong driver btw)

Someone had called 911 to report an operator that they believed was driving while under the influence.  The person said it was a line 58 heading to Beaverton TC.  However, the only 58 still out at the time had just left BTC heading to Portland.  Police did not feel the complaint was credible, but myself and unit 9115 still met with the operator.

THE ADVENTURE TRULY BEGINS

Starting next week I will be out exploring the parts of the transit system that I never experienced during my career at Trimet.
I will also be re-discovering some of the early days of my career, back when I was doing crush loads and running extremely late.
Of course I will be taking along my trustee video camera to capture all the excitement.

And now I do it as a CITIZEN, no more disciplinary letters will be forthcoming.

This will be an interesting chapter in my life in Portland. I'm here for quite awhile it seems.
As long as I'm around, I might as well continue my hobby, TRANSIT BLOGGING.
Now I can do it from the other point of view.
Since there are so many new drivers, I'm hoping I won't be recognized.
Most drivers may have heard of me somewhere, but they do not recognize me when they see me if they don't know me.
That has been my experience as an employee anyway, I surely do not want to be recognized as I prowl the transit system.

WHY DID I REALLY LEAVE?

What you see in this post is the letter that disciplined me for doing things that are totally legal for average citizens and furthermore I was actually told by a former executive that I could do this activity. This was the actual beginning of the end of my career at Trimet. As you can see from the date of this letter, it took less than a year and a half to actually see me leave. I'm sure the managers are quite happy to be rid of me.
That was probably the intent all along, hence I really wanted to avoid them on my way out of here.

HERE!

Michael Anderson responds to Trimet budget presentation

WHO'S GONNA PAY?

I had an interesting talk with Jeff Ackerson this afternoon who informed me of the sad state of affairs surrounding our grievance/arbitration process.
From what I was hearing it appears that each one of these arbitrations between management and employees gets very costly, so costly that the union may be in the red up to $1,000,000 when its all accounted for. So the next question is who's gonna pony up for that?
I bet ya its the members that will have to pay for it.
In any event  the candidates for ATU president need to start addressing this issue!

Mchuff knows everything

For example today he informed me that I had not followed the HR policy regarding retirement procedure. (since when do i follow hr stuff?)
Of course I had no idea what he was talking about so he proceeded to show me the HR section which specified that I was to give the station manager 60 days notice of retirement.
I didn't have a clue about that, I just went straight to the woman who does the retirements Windy Graham, who proceeded to basically handle the entire thing for me.
He also informed me that by not going through the procedure I had forfeited a $200 gift certificate from Freddies.
They should donate that to the rescue mission for me if that is indeed true.
I also could have gotten a clock, oh well, I got 1,000+ live video to which I can remember my times at trimet.

"Passenger answers the radio"

Real incident reports from Trimet supervisors
I received a call from Dispatch to go and see 1434 which was stopped at the first stop on the Hawthorne bridge west bound. They were concerned that a passenger had answered the radio and told them the operator was helping the passengers exit through one of the emergency windows.    I arrived at 5:53pm and talked with the operator.  What had happened was the doors wouldn't open to let a passenger exit.  She tried pushing on the doors to no avail.  She then left the bus to do a battery reset which didn't help plus now she finds herself locked outside of the bus with all of her passengers inside. One of the passengers opened the emergency window and they all started climbing out the window.  The operator was holding the window and helping people out making sure no one got hurt.  That is when one of the passengers answered the radio.  With everyone off the bus the driver climbed into the bus and called Dispatch.  Dispatch told her to try the butterfly button which she did and it fixed the problem.
The operator finished her shift and was told to see her station manager before  her next shift.

"Get out of my face"

Real incident reports from Trimet drivers
The incident was reported as an antifreeze spill blocking the intersection of SW Greenburg Rd and SW Main ST in Tigard @ Pacific Hwy, a 6-lane arterial. When I arrived at 1:35, I found the bus on Main St blocking 1 lane of travel at a bus stop not an intersection; no 4-way flashers, no triangles, no garbage can to contain the spill. He was sitting in the shelter eating. I instructed the driver that it is his responsibility to relay accurate information to dispatch and to implement proper/appropriate safety protocol which he failed to do.  He responded with "Get out of my face.  I don't want to talk to you"

First Transit
First Transit Strike Press Conference Speech
By Jonathan Hunt, President
Thank you for coming out today and showing your support. My name is Jonathan Hunt and I am the president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 757. We represent the dedicated workers who transport the elderly and disabled in Multnomah and Washington counties.

Mcfarlanes gambit

Ignorance and greed, Mcfarlane's greatest ally.
Most TriMet driver's know very little about LIFT drivers and virtually nothing about the issues affecting them that will ultimately affect themselves.
Trimet has all of its workforce working like dogs but making pretty good money in the process.
My personal opinion is that Mcfarlane is playing a gambit that he thinks he will win if he sees it through.
The lack of solidarity at TriMet is pretty obvious, there are even anti union employees who belong to the union.
I've said it a thousand times, don't ever underestimate the executive management, these are highly intelligent very skilled people.
I am sure they have investigated all the potential outcomes.
Mcfarlane has the support of his board and the governor, those are the people he answers too, nobody else.
He suspects that most operators don't really care about any of it.
He's probably right, I hate to admit that, but that is what I see after years of watching Trimet employees and managers.

STRIKE IS OVER?

WHAT DO FIRST TRANSIT DRIVERS FACE?

First Transit underbid MV 2 MILLION dollars to get Reg 1's contract away from them (MV). When MV had Reg 1, they didn't have the problems that have arisen since First transit took over for them. The driver's had decent health coverage w/out paying out the ass for it like they do now.
My wife's CO-PAY for a dr visit is $277.00!! That is the co-pay with First Transit's insurance that they offer. While fixed route driver's have one of the best health care packages in the country, para-transit drivers do not get the benefits of the same union, let alone their employer. So, I do blame first transit for some of this. The union doesn't have to take care of the drivers like they do their own because it is SUB-CONTRACTED out to another company. Sorry, but no one should be paying $277 for a damn co-pay for a dr. visit. We sure cannot afford it, could you?

TriMet elderly and disabled transit operators on strike
Bus operators who operate the elderly and disabled transportation service for TriMet in Multnomah and Washington Counties went on strike this morning after negotiations and mediation that began in February 2010 failed to produce a new agreement. The operators, who are employed by the foreign company First Transit, Inc. under contract with TriMet, are represented by the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 757. Pickets start going up this morning at the TriMet administration building located at 4012 SE 17th Avenue, Portland.

Michael Levine on the lift problems

TriMet once again discriminates by actions against people with disabilities...
TriMet is in violation of the ADA on several fronts. First, the ADA is clear that paratransit rides cannot be prioritized; fact the ADA is clear that TriMet cannot even ask the purpose of a ride, thus the prioritizing TriMet is doing is in conflict with two guidelines not meeting the minimum standard of the ADA.

TRIMET LIFT ON STRIKE! MCFARLANE GETS WHAT HE WANTS FOR ALL OF TRIMET

“The general manager of TriMet can stop all of this,” Hunt said in a phone interview from a picket line in front of the agency's Southeast Portland headquarters. “But he has decided to withhold service from the most vulnerable rather than going to arbitration to deal with these issues.”

OPAL Releases Alternative Proposal for TriMet Budget (Updated)

The MCFUHER speaks to his troops

I need to ask 1743 of you to do something fairly simple and very important over the next few months. Look in your mail at home for an envelope from TriMet. We’ve hired an outside company called Mercer to conduct a “dependent eligibility audit”—which means documenting that everybody who gets health insurance through TriMet is eligible to do so. In the envelope you’ll find a letter from me, a list of dependent eligibility requirements, and a short form that lists who’s on your medical/dental plan. It’s simple – if you have someone on your health insurance plan that shouldn’t be there – take them off.

What I really object too

An accident just occurred on the east side where a car blew right through a stop sign and smashed into the side of a bus.
There were two witnesses to this event in two separate vehicles, one of which was a police officer.
The accident has nothing to do with the Trimet operator, completely non avoidable, yet this operator is going in for a drug test!
WHY?

A TALE OF TWO TRIMET'S (based on Mr Mcfarlanes tale)

A tale of two TriMets
One of the Trimet’s is staffed by people who get up and go to sleep at all hours of the day and night.

They work outside in all sorts of conditions, the wet, the cold, the  hot and even the icy.

What's It Like to Be a City Bus Driver?

And its not much different right here in Portland:
It never occurred to me that a job as simple as driving a bus would require so much abuse, leadership and complexity. Incidents like these are one of the reasons why I avoid taking the bus whenever possible. The first time I boarded a public bus in Los Angeles, I found myself trapped next to a homeless man who carried four bags of decaying trash along for the ride. He had snuck on the bus through the back exit and had refused to leave, despite multiple requests from the driver to "please pay your fare or exit the bus." The stench was so unbearable that I found myself heaving over a trashcan after getting off. When this driver threatened to call the police, the man shrugged off the threat. He intuitively knew that the bus driver would not congest the entire bus line to wait for "the po po" to arrive.

Transit executives gone wild

Taxpayer money intended for Roanoke's bus system was spent by its general manager on cigars, golf fees, restaurant meals, beer and wine, federal prosecutors allege.
Dave Morgan, who no longer heads Valley Metro, was charged in documents unsealed Monday with stealing or converting government money.

I really don't get it

When something happens on the train or a road, the 'authorities' always choose to shut down everything to 'investigate'.
Why the hell don't they just remove the body, let the trains run or keep the road open, then do their silly investigation?
Why does the general public have to pay every time there is some sort of incident?
It's not like the 'authorities' actually care about the dead guy in the street or MAX tracks.

WE LOVE IT!

Green line hits pedestrian

A 19-year old man was struck by a MAX Green Line train in Southeast Portland early Monday afternoon when he ignored a warning horn.

"He was trying to beat the train," said Paul Corah, Portland Fire & Rescue public information officer. "The train won."

The operator was pulling to the end of the Southeast Divison Street platform just after 1 p.m. and sounded a warning horn, said Mary Fetsch, the agency's public information officer. The train was moving at a "slow speed," she said, but the man continued on his way.

Corah said the man, who was dragged about 90 feet down the track, was taken to the hospital. His name and condition have not been released.

THE IRONY OF IT ALL!

Maybe I am a little weird, but I do enjoy listening in to the dispatch control center when I can.
To me its entertainment beyond any book, any movie, any lecture.
I myself can't believe how much I enjoy it.
Maybe its because I know exactly how it feels to be in the shoes of these operators and know many of the people that I hear.
I'm completely fascinated by it, its strange.
And the irony is they tried so hard to stop me from doing it.
If they had just let me continue seeing the acid reports none of this dispatch stuff would have even happened. But they shut down my access to the incident reports, hence I started looking for new ways to see what was going on out here.
I knew things were a mess out there.
I gotta tell ya though, its a bigger mess out there than I imagined.

Trimet activist HB

Mr. Hunt,
I want to congratulate you on single handedly destroying what little faith “we” have in your leadership. You’ve had done something that management “expected” you to do, “sell “us” out. In your latest “lay-down” tactic, you’ve compromised “our” position, now, and for “our” future. In your time since the contract expired, here is what “you’ve” accomplished:
· A lawsuit for unfair labor practice, success, ultimately what will this mean? Who knows?
· Informationals, failed, many times over.
· Challenge Trimet, in board meetings, failure, many times over.
· NOTHING ELSE, of any consequence.
Trimet doesn’t need to do a thing. They already know that you will implode. While you are using the same old augments, they laugh at every attempt you make to disrupt their process. As a leader, you have totally failed all those that put any type of faith in your administration. All the tough talk that I had heard from you and the other paid employee was nice to hear, but ultimately when the going got tough, your administration laid down, sad.

Trimet's budget is bigger than the City of Portland's budget

TriMet actually has a slightly larger annual budget than the city of Portland.  That means that McFarland and his merry band of sock puppets control more public funds than Mayor Sam and the commissioners.  And guess who is elected, and who is not?
