MAX train gets stuck (dispatch)

TRIMET EXECS TRYING TO INTENTIONALLY BANKRUPT TRIMET?

Trimet lies and distortions

This year’s Pride NW parade and festival are sponsored in part by TriMet.  When TriMet claims to be experiencing a historic “budget-shortfall” somehow it has money to throw away on sponsorship.

WOULD THEY INTENTIONALLY EVADE PUBLIC TESTIMONY?

The Trimet executives changed both the time and the place of its board meeting without proper public notice.
Have you noticed as I have that every-time something important is planned they move the meeting location and/or times?
Personally, I think its intentional.
Why did they change the time of this board meeting?
And what prompted them to change its location into a more obscure spot away from the beloved light rail lines.

“Some have learnt many Tricks of sly Evasion, Instead of Truth they use Equivocation, And eke it out with mental Reservation, Which is to good Men an Abomination.” (B Franklin)

TRIMET EXECUTIVES DECIDE TO DOUBLE THE "CONTIGENCY FUND"

One of the best arguments that OPAL has to make its point is the fact that our beloved executives have decided to DOUBLE the 'contingency fund' from $10 million to $20 million.
They want to cut the hell out of bus service, increase the fares for passengers at the same time they are hoarding cash!
This place operates on the corporate model and we as the public are in serious danger of losing our transit system completely.
The OPAL fight is the most important fight in the history of TRIMET.
Be there tomorrow and support them!

SUPERVISORY REPORTS

Rail supervisor prevents suicide

Rail operator Mike Beiser was crossing the Steel Bridge at about 9:30 this morning when he spotted a woman standing on the railing on the west end of the bridge. He immediately called into TriMet’s Operations Control Center. Rail Supervisor Bob Shaffer was three blocks away and responded. He said the woman had gone over the railing and he could tell she was intent on jumping. He immediately contacted the control center and asked for police.
Supervisor Shaffer approached the woman and attempted to talk her into coming back over the railing, but she said she wanted to jump. When she moved closer to the edge, Supervisor Shaffer grabbed onto her wrist and she jumped. He said his adrenaline kicked in and he was able to hold onto her. A passerby helped Supervisor Shaffer keep the woman from falling until police and fire crews arrived and pulled her to safety.

EPIC TRIMET FAIL

Epic fail Trimet Maintenance of Way Management and Supervisors. Yesterday a failure of the Steel Bridge at Portland's premier event the Rose Festival fleets arrival. This failure made the news. Trimet couldn't even muster the staff to come and repair it and relied on the luck of getting an ODOT crew that was in the area to inspect it so as the bridge tender could overide the Trimet signal locks and lift the bridge for the ships

Supervisory reports

Trinet internal web site changed

One of our agency’s most used and trusted communications tools has gotten a much needed facelift. And here it is – a new TriNET. Easier to use, faster performance, and a freshened look – what’s not to like? It’s been 7 months in the making as a small team of Public Affairs and IT folks worked to improve the agency’s intranet portal for employees. In addition to their regular duties – they’ve been able to thoughtfully rebuild the one place employees turn to for information. And it’s taken collaboration from most every unit of this organization. My thanks to all of you for helping to make this happen. Remember – TriNET is for you. The makeover is just the start as our communications staff works to renew all of our communications with you – the most valuable asset we have here at TriMet – our employees.

IF THE TRIMET WEST SIDE BUS FLEET WERE PASSENGER VEHICLES IT WOULD LOOK LIKE THIS

OPAL CONTINUES FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT

A lot of advocacy groups are good at complaining but not so good at coming up with workable solutions. OPAL Environmental Justice Oregon has spent many hours tweaking TriMet's proposed budget to reduce fare increases and maintain bus service during the past few weeks, however.

Members of the group met with TriMet board members and staff to make sure everyone agrees on their numbers.

OPAL, which believes public transit is a civil right, accepts the creation of a single fare, the elimination of the Free Rail Zone and the reconfiguration of 15 bus routes to improve efficiency, as TriMet proposes. But OPAL argues for lower fares, discount ticket books, extended transfer times and maintaining low-ridership lines. The group would balance the budget with a smaller contingency fund, reduced subsidies for Portland Streetcar and parking fees at park-and-ride lots.
OPAL says its budget would generate more than 300,000 additional rides a year while TriMet's proposed budget would reduce them by 1.1 million. Dozens of people are preparing to testify in support of OPAL's proposal at the board's June 13 meeting. The group also is organizing a rally before the meeting, when the final budget could be adopted.

OPAL's alternative budget can be found at opalpdx.org.

county officials days are numbered if they do not allow voters voice

The Clackamas County Commission is facing a difficult decision after the county counsel's office issued an opinion this week saying that the public rail funding measure on the Sept. 18 special election ballot doesn't apply to the $1.49 billion Portland-to-Milwaukie light-rail project.

Activists who gathered enough voter signatures to place the measure on the ballot certainly intended for it to require a public vote on the county's $25 million commitment to project. Virtually all of the news coverage said it did, too.

But now the commission has to decide whether to risk angering even more voters by saying they don't have the right to vote on the funding even before the measure passes or fails.

The decision is especially tricky for Chair Charolette Lehan and Commissioner Jamie Damon. They are already facing funding opponents at the November general election. Appearing to be against the right to vote is probably not the best way to win re-election, even if there's a legal opinion to justify such a decision.

Does Trimet really pay out more in benefits than wages?

But she also pointed out that "fringe benefits" includes a number of different categories: medical coverage, disability payments, workers comp and unemployment, time off and some others.
It’s unlikely the average person would consider payouts to workers comp and unemployment coverage to be benefits in the traditional sense. They’re not the sort of thing you negotiate before taking a job -- they’re the cost of being an employer.
Mary King, a professor of economics at Portland State University, said lumping those sorts of costs in with this discussion may be misleading. "I think it's really a huge red herring to start talking about what TriMet might be paying for past employees," she said. "That's an attempt to make it look like they're paying a lot."

Portland's 2012 STARLIGHT PARADE!

Watch a float break down right on the MAX tracks

Trimet after action report-starlight

Trains being held for what was to be just a fun run and not timed event.  Officer’s stating it was not in their orders to bump trains; my understanding was they were going to be informed they would bump through the run. This caused issues on trains away from platforms.

Sunday morning incident

A man fell asleep/passed out at the 60th MAX station who had a dog. The dog was roaming around the platform.
Control/operator was concerned that the dog was going to get hit so they sent a supervisor check on the man.
The dog got on the train and traveled to 82nd avenue where the supervisor attempted to get it off.
However the dog was uncooperative being away from its owner.
They got the dog on another train going back to 60th ave.
By that time the man had woken up and had taken off down the tracks looking for the dog,
The supervisor went down the tracks and found the man, dog in tow.
Police came on another train and got off where the man was and arrested him.
The supervisor returned to the vehicle at 82nd avenue and found the windows shattered, glass all over the street.
Items were stolen from the vehicle.

JUST WAIT TILL THE DEMISE OF FARE LESS SQUARE

Ending fare less square for buses has propelled MAX's ridership figures, which are now  flattened out.
The 'reconfiguration' of the bus service will 'force' some people onto the MAX, for example after September there will no now way down the length of the transit mall except by MAX from NW Portland., which is absurd in my opinion.

AFTER ALL THE 'SAFETY' NONSENSE ACCIDENT RATE STAYS THE SAME

MONTH AFTER MONTH WE SEE TRIMET DOING BETTER THAN THEY PROJECTED

Yet they continue telling the public there is a problem?

coming to Trimet

At Sunday's Charter meeting we got to hear about the new buses, interesting to learn there are 2 Hidden Camera's... full audio, both can be Live Streamed. Glad Bruce Hansen mentioned how we must revisit the policy... I know C-Tran has this system and allot of the drivers like the security it provides. what do you think?
My comment~~> live streamed? what's wrong with that? there are many more instances of passengers abusing bus drivers than bus drivers screwing up...i personally think this sort of thing is to the benefit of drivers.... and i've was pushing for audio for a long time because video without audio only tells one side of the story-take a look at the baby bus driver incident-if the public could have heard that baby screaming it might have had a different outcome-and then there is the bogus 'you didnt call your stops' baloney-those of us that were calling our stops still got accused of not calling stops-with audio that can no longer happen

Obviously its the price of gas that is increasing ridership on transit

Doesn't take a genius to figure that out. Nobody really wants to take public transit, its slow, not always reliable, and has some very unpleasant citizens to deal with. But as everything in our lives, its all about the money. Trimet fares are among the highest in the USA but an all day pass is just a little more than a gallon of gas. Trimet is competitive where it counts, cost! Ironically, just when American's need it the most-public transit is being dismantled by years of failed Federal policies, such as allowing a 1 1/2 billion dollar transfer from bus service to rail service right here at Trimet for the mystery train at the same time Trimet is pleading poverty. Insanity is the rule when it comes to our government.

TRIMET BUDGET CRISIS UPDATE

The headache is about to start

Due to PMLR construction, all modes of northbound traffic will be detoured away from Powell overpass for about a year, starting 6/15/12.

MY PICKS FOR ATU LEADERSHIP

I am no where near as critical as some of our members are of our current president, Jonathan Hunt.
From my point of view Jon has done a pretty decent job leading in the midst  of the world wide attack against union labor. When you watch Jonathan conduct a union meeting you have to respect the man and his abilities. He is a brilliant man no doubt.
The current contract we are working with is a good one, with decent pay and benefits.
Mr Hunt and Mr Heintzman have done an excellent job of negotiating our contracts. I congratulate both of them for the excellent work.
But I cannot wrap my mind around voting for Heitzman/Hunt ticket for one reason, they have been in charge too long.
Mr Heintzman, after his tumultuous tenure at the international, thinks he can just walk in and take over at 757 again?
How can I possibly support that at this point in our history.
We do need a change, and this would be a good time to move in that direction.

BRUCE HANSEN PRESIDENT
With that in mind I support BRUCE HANSEN FOR PRESIDENT. I think that Tom Horton has some excellent ideas and the intelligence to pull off the presidency, but he has no real exposure to current union affairs and I feel that there needs to be some current experience with union affairs.

Mr Hansen has been involved with union affairs and vociferously defended me personally while I was working at Trimet so I know the man well. He is a man that can be trusted.

MICHAEL CONNER VICE PRESIDENT
The choices for VP are a little more muddled, both Jay Frye and Mike Connor seem well qualified to be Vice President.  But Mr Connor has been part of the union and I remember reading his articles in the labor press and was very impressed by this man. Therefore he is my pick for Vice President.

Now the treasurer was somewhat of a quandary.  I was not very happy with the work of our current treasurer. But as time went on I think she started growing into the job. And I was very impressed how she handled being sidelined by Jon. She has been through the school of hard knocks and deserves another term in my opinion. I will be voting for Evette Farra for treasurer.

Some info

1.The Unfair Labor Practice for TriMet Employees concerning COLA’s (cost of living adjustment) was settled and the Union won.
2.The COLA adjustments will be received retroactive calculating from 6/1/2011, 12/1/2011 & 6/1/2012. These are the scheduled dates that you should have received your COLA increases but did not, these are guaranteed wages that you will receive in your pay check.
3.TriMet’s current Arbitration is complete; Ron Heintzman was the expert witness for the union. Since Ron was one of the people who wrote the contract he was able to bring information to the proceeding and make it clear as to the intention of the Labor Contract Language. The decision for TriMet arbitration is expected on or before July 31, 2012.
4.The new contract negotiations for TriMet will begin in August, as the current contract (decided by the arbitrator), will expire in November
