WHY PEOPLE DONT USE TRANSIT TO GET TO WORK

The problem? Most people don’t live within easy reach of those lines. “The typical job,” author Adie Tomer writes, “is accessible to only about 27 percent of its metropolitan workforce by transit in 90 minutes or less.” Even though millions of people live near transit stops, and even though millions of jobs are near transit stops, those systems don’t line up in a way that allows most people to commute by mass transit in less than 90 minutes.

Race, Class, and the Stigma of Riding the Bus in America

 The ramifications of this stigma stretch far beyond NIMBY name-calling. Localities have responded by pouring funds into more gentrifiable transit systems at the expense of the city bus—even if ridership on subways and light rails represents a relatively boutique market.

TRIMET EMPLOYEE AND ACTIVIST 'HB' CONNECTS THE DOTS

I know by now that all of “us” have gotten the Mercer mailer.  Which President Bruce sent out a response of “cease and desist”?  It entailed the following:  “You are demanding that bargaining unit members produce documentation regarding their relationship to dependents listed on their health care coverage.  You threaten to terminate their health insurance and employment it they do not comply within 30 days.”  Most of “us” know that each year “we” receive an “update” form asking “us” if there are any changes in “our” dependents.  If “we” don’t return the form, they automatically use “our” old form, as correct information, and they move on, but “why” now?  Some of “us” have a theory concerning this issue. 

I FILE MY OWN COMPLAINT-AGAINST TRIMET CUSTOMER SERVICE

My friend Jason Mchuff was riding the 73 train 2. When the bus reached the end of the line he asked to be provided a ride to the garage. The operator refused and made Jason get off. He had to walk over a mile to the next stop. Jenny J said it is the operators discretion weather to give a rider transport on the dead head.
THIS IS IN DIRECT VIOLATION OF TRIMET RULES.

Customer service and Jenny J need a complete retraining because they are dismissing customer complaints using logic that is not supported by Trimet regulations.

I worked at Trimet for 15 years and was told THAT THE BUS IS IN REVENUE SERVICE ON DEAD HEADS AND THAT CUSTOMERS CAN RIDE ON THE DEAD HEAD. There is absolutely not one logical argument to deny a rider a ride along the dead head or to the garage. The driver is making the usual $25/hr for driving empty, it should not be a choice.

In the POST BELOW this we see how the fat heads that run Trimet customer service (term used loosely) and training DO NOT EVEN KNOW THEIR OWN RULES! And for this type of incompetence the tax payers are funding $30+ dollars an hour plus the usual GOLDEN benefits! How can we as union members possibly defend ourselves to the public when we see example after example of incompetence and misuse of tax payer funds?

TRIMET CONTINUES IT'S ATTACKS ON BUS RIDERS

This company has fallen so far from its original purpose it almost makes me feel like crying. I only retired a month ago and for 15 years it was policy to that all TRIMET buses WERE IN SERVICE until they get back to the garage. Riders were permitted to use dead heading buses and get off at any stop along the route or at the garage. Well apparently that has changed. Once of the bus is at the end of the line THE TAX PAYER FUNDS THE ENTIRE TRIP BACK TO THE GARAGE AND NO RIDERS ARE ALLOWED ALONG THE WAY, unless of course the driver has some ethics, which apparently is the exception now at TRIMESS.

Jason Mchuff denied boarding on dead head (corrected)

Whoever was driving 73/02 today you can expect a SIP for denying a ride to our buddy Jason who requested a ride from the jail back to the center street garage today. Jason was on the 73 bus when it got to the jail and the operator kicked him off even though Jason asked for a ride back to center street. Jason had to walk over a mile to find another bus stop. This is the kind of behavior that justifies the destruction of employee pay and benefits.
Last I heard operators are in service including dead heads where customers request a ride back to the garage.

At Trimet its all about who you know

From a reliable source:

A rail supervisor used "excessive force" (police ruling) against a juvenile in an incident at a transit center.
As most people that work at Trimet know, most everybody would be terminated immediately.
But because this particular supervisor was a personal friend of one of the top executives, they were able to keep their job at Trimet, as a rail operator.
Trimet did its usual job of covering the whole incident up.

I think that having Jon as vice president can be a good thing, he is up to date on all the issues and could be a valuable resource to Bruce. There is no reason to believe that there is any animosity between the two. It might be a good idea to keep Ron Heintzman on the payroll as a consultant, as Jon did when he was president.

Read what he says:
How TriMet closes the potential new $5 million budget gap is already in dispute. One rider advocacy group, OPAL Environmental Justice Oregon, says TriMet's board has promised to take the money out of its $20 million contingency fund.
"That's the reason they gave for keeping the $5 million in the contingency fund, in case the union wins the arbitration," says Jonathan Ostar, OPAL's executive director.
Stedman says that is a misunderstanding. He insists that contingency funds can only be spent on one-time shortfalls, not ongoing expenses.

Do you know what he just said? He is arguing that this is not a shortfall.That's the stupidest statement I have ever heard.  Well what would be a shortfall if this isn't it? (Maybe a WES bailout)
I actually can't think of anything more appropriate than using contingency funds to keep service rolling instead of whining about your contract. The next contract is forthcoming, solve your problem then and stop trying to create enemies.

SHIT IS GONNA HIT THE FAN.....any minute

Complaints are pouring in about TriMet's new budget.
Advocates for riders are criticizing fare increases and service reductions. Downtown residents are unhappy about the end of free MAX rides. And Portland Mayor Sam Adams has accused TriMet of breaking a promise to provide free rides to public school students.
The complaints follow TriMet's decisions to close a $12 million gap in the budget that took effect Sunday. But TriMet officials say things could get worse - much worse - in the future.
"We need a massive change of astronomical proportions in our finances for things to get better," says Randy Stedman, TriMet's executive director of labor relations and human resources.
Bruce Hansen, new president of the union that represents most TriMet employees, is not convinced, however. Hansen says he has not yet seen any documents that prove the financial picture is that bleak.
"My understanding is we've repeatedly asked for proof and haven't seen it," says Hansen, who became president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 757 on July 1.

It's a typical part of the manipulation process as well as insulating yourself from accountability by blaming & pointing the fingers at skilled people who have since left the agency.(regarding "it took a long time for this employee 'problem' to get to this")

Walsh correctly focused on dismantling the "us vs them" mindset of TriMet management and, he wanted strong healthcare for employees because he recognized the tenuous and stressful environment TriMet employees were working in. Fred Hansen wanted a diverse workforce and he demanded open, honest and responsive accountability to employees and customers.

Don't be foolish or naive . This current team of management has been around for 25-plus years. They have succeeded in moving backwards by dismantling all the milestones previously built. This includes: safe and reliable transit service; credible ATU relationships focused on communication & resolution; maintaining a vibrant, creative and proud workforce; and prompt response to every customer we served.

But there's no problem scheduling a 10 minute layover for every single WES run at Beaverton TC, and 26 minutes for each WES run at Wilsonville.

For every 90 minutes of service, the trains are in revenue service two 27 minute runs (54 minutes) and on layover 36 minutes. And THAT has to be protected at ALL cost, while bus is nickel and dimed...keep pushing the bus operators further and further, they don't need breaks nor do they have the stressful job that a WES Operator (and Conductor!) have...

THIS MAN IS A MONSTER

I have never worked (or used to work in this case) in any environment where the management purposely creates a hostile work environment for its employees. This man is directly responsible for many of the incidents (about 12+ a day) by preaching how over paid and over compensated Trimet drivers are thereby creating resentment in our riding public. He is also responsible for allowing news items to be publicized that  show 'driver negligence.' Many of the 'leaked' stories are not even the fault of the operator, but does  McFührer care about that? NOPE, anything to destroy his unionized employees

Nor did the two people who were working here (including the fueling guy) seem to care that I was taking pictures. The fueling guy just turned his back to me...that's fine I didn't need him in the picture but he had a job to do so I wasn't about to tell him to move, I just got what I wanted, he's doing what he needed to do, and frankly he seemed a little interested at the wrap too. So if I show up on the Steel Bridge spy cam, yes, I was there.)

Watch for your Dependent Eligibility Audit mailing!

The verification phase of the Dependent Eligibility Audit is beginning. During this phase you will need to verify the eligibility of all the dependents remaining on your TriMet health care plan. This means you will have to supply documentation, like tax returns, marriage and/or birth certificates, for each of your eligible dependents by Aug. 3, 2012. On or around June 30, you will receive a list of acceptable documents and step by step procedures in the mail. Make sure to review the eligibility requirements, provide documentation verifying your dependents and confirm the audit of your dependents is complete. Documents can be mailed, faxed or uploaded through Mercer’s website.

Due to the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail project, the current Operations Command Center at Ruby Junction will no longer be big enough to support the rail addition. Holgate Plaza, currently housing Service Planning and Scheduling, Transportation Training and Safety and Security will need to be demolished for the project. On Wednesday, the Board of Directors approved a lease for two floors of Harrison Square, an office building located at SW 1st Avenue and Harrison Street, where most employees from divisions other than operations will report to work as of February 2013. Eventually, the OCC, Operations, Safety and Security, IT and Customer Service will be consolidated at Center Street. New, smaller cubes will be used in both Harrison Square and Center Street, along with fewer offices to promote a more collaborative work environment and save money by reducing square footage needed for the lease.

You can be taunted, harassed, and bullied. And there is not much you can do about it except have the person removed from the bus.
And if the offender leaves before the 'authorities' arrive there is no further action taken against them, unless of course they actually used some sort of violence against you. They can come back another day and do it all over again.
School bus drivers even have less control over the situation as they are prohibited from removing students from the bus.
