Gimme Questions

Alright, if I am going to ask questions of Beth DeHamel, give them to me now. I'm not going to have time to give her, like, a hundred questions on her way out of the door, but I'll pick the best/most relevant, I promise. I'm guessing I'll have three to five questions, that's what I'm counting on. You guys are better at the mad deets and specifics, so I'll take ideas from you. Do tell me, what do I ask our CFO?

The Eastside Streetcar opens on the 22nd of September and the city is going all-out. They're having essentially a giant worship ceremony with vendors and free streetcar and speeches and effing museums. It's crazy how many tax-payer dollars are not going to good use to go to this. DESPICABLE...

...I say as if I'm not going to be there at ten sharp.

Got An Email From DeHamel

I'll summarize it since I'm not sure what the proper credo is on relaying other people's emails (even if they are to me).

In essence, she said she could not meet with me personally, but she 'encouraged' me to attend the board meeting tomorrow where she was making a presentation for "Fund Balance and Contingency" and offered to talk to me about it after the meeting.

I just gave her an honest reply; I told her that I was not sure if I could make it to the board meeting because I was transporting my sister to a day camp and I doubted that TriMet would be able to get me there in time. Isn't that sort of ironic, TriMet?

I'll make it towards the end of the meeting, because hell I'm going to give testimony since Public Forum is open.

Speaking of little white TriMet lies

Line 15-Belmont does not have frequent service east of 92nd and Stark, going by technicalities. As it is, on Sunday service between 92nd and Stark and Gateway TC runs every 36-40 minutes. That section has the same frequency as non-frequent line 20.

If you look at the tippy top right of this picture, you will see that TriMet already has its new route map. As you can see, line 87 is right below line 22 on NE 102nd Avenue, which is one of the service changes of Fall 2012. Obviously TriMet has its new system map out; they just don't want to show us. lots of drivers suffered heat stroke this weekend i hope all is doing better but im a little outraged why trimet and our union weren't out handing water out to drivers. i did in the past for our union when it would get above 90 i asked jon to do a water patrol driving our union van handing out water to members.what wasn't it done this weekend?this is unacceptable in my book.

How to fix the Washington Park Shuttle

It strikes me as weird that the 63 and Washington Park Shuttle (also known as the 83) still co-exist. Now that the Washington Park Loop has a number and is officially a bus line (an official sign that TriMet has clearly stopped giving a shit about it) the stupidity of it all is just obvious. Almost every sign is served by both buses with some different routing in the middle. Just compare the two on the system map. It's suffocatingly useless.

I guess you could argue that having the two together provides frequency, and I suppose that could be true, except for a few things. 1) Line 63 runs every 40 minutes midday while line 83 runs every 20 minutes, and most of the time the 63 leaves the Oregon Zoo anywhere between two and five minutes after the 83.  Not useful, now is it?

Great. We’re stuck at the Sunset Transit Center with seven miles of Max cars stopped ahead of us. As the driver suggests over the P.A., “You may want to take the 20 bus into downtown,” I’m already trotting down the platform.
About half the trainload is right with me. The 20 Burnside to Gresham arrives like a prompt ambulance and we cram into it.

MY CASE TO THE COURT WILL BE SIMPLE

Mr Mcfarlane tells us that the ARBITRATOR RULING supersedes the ELRB ruling. In other words the arbitrator has the power to IMPLEMENT CONTRACTS THAT HAVE BEEN BARGAINED IN BAD FAITH. I personally AM NOT a lawyer, but I don't see how an illegal provision in a contract is legally binding arbitrators ruling or not.

Heat Wave

Summer has finally arrived in the Northwest (at least for a day or two), with temperatures expected in the mid-90's + here in Portland. Therefore, Tri-Met has put out the word that its vaunted light rail lines will be...um...delayed. You see, the fixed-rail systems that they've spent billions of dollars on don't work all that well in the heat.
Heat causes the rails to expand, and it also causes the aerial power lines that feed the trains' pantagraphs to sag. This means that they have to go vewy, vewy slowly in order to avoid derailments or other damage to "infrastructure".
Buses don't have such issues, but there are two big problems with them: they aren't cool, and they're inexpensive. Tri-Met, which has morphed from a transit agency into a development agency, hates buses.

DRIVING A BUS SHOULD NOT BE A SURVIVAL EXERCISE

TriMet was not the only one delayed today

Or, there were problems with the lower deck of the Steel Bridge, too (among other things)

Amtrak Train 14 (northbound Coast Starlight) was recorded as leaving Salem at 4:22PM and didn't get into Portland Union Station until 9 o'clock. Over 4 1/2 hours to get from Salem to Portland.

A rider's companion notes that 1/2 hour or more was spent sitting on the other side of the Steel Bridge waiting for heat-related issues to be taken care of. It was also heard that a woman rider with a walker did not make it off the train in Salem.

In addition, southbound Amtrak Cascades train 507 arrived in Portland late due to heat/weather issues where it was held for the Steel Bridge issues until almost an hour after the next southbound train, 509 had arrived.

GODDAMN PORTLAND TRANSPORT CAN BE SUCH A PAIN IN THE ASS

 It appears that I have given Bob R a bad rap. The post wasn't moderated on purpose it seems but by a spam filter due to word I used in the post. (another p-transport pain in the ass). But back in the day things got pretty wild over there at P-Transport, and Bob would regularly moderate my posts.

Its never been particularly easy blogging over there, and I've been part of their crowd for years now. But those moderators over there, especially Bob R, can just get ridiculous sometimes in their tyrannical moods. And Bob R does have that streak of tyrant in him that comes out occasionally.

I'm probably going to take on DeHamel's request.

With a few conditions, of course. They'll be phrased more politely than they are here. :P

1) I reserve the right to blog about anything that is said, otherwise I'm out.
2) Dialogue, not monologue.
3) I reserve the right to bring someone with me.
3.5) Please don't bring a group of people with you. I'll limit my company to one. 
4) I really don't want recycled answers and whatnot. Give me honesty.

Another attempt of the Tri-Met management team strong arming a Union employee. The day shift supervisor at Center St. told an employee they need to remove their "The Tri-Met Way" sticker from their personally owned toolbox. I was also informed that the employee was asked for the names of others who are also displaying the sticker on their toolbox. What a great way for a newly appointed day shift supervisor to say "Hey Bob, look what I did. Praise me, love me, accept me."

I have been wondering what “is” going on in the battle that “we” are in???  A battle, which should have started in 09”, with the end of the old contract???  Since then, this union has been silent on “all” issues of important to “all” its members.  The communications between “us” and you have been non-existent at best.  This “is” unacceptable, then and now!  I and others have said this time and again, “WHAT IS THE PLAN GOING FORWARD!!!!!”  Since the elections, “we” have not heard a single thing, from “all leadership” on any issues, other than, “MERCER (file or not to file), and ULP’s.  This really means very little (but necessary) in the bigger theme of things going forward.  Some of “us” know that these are “not” the big picture and the next CONTRACT, “is”.  This is the battle that will determine the future relationship with the company.  “What is the plan”????  Leadership “is” not mobile, leadership is quiet, leadership has no new ideas, and leadership is not willing to speak to the media and use it to “our” advantage (although I heard “your” vice president come out and say, “its total war”.  This “is” an empty attempt at best.).  What are “you” going to do??
I know that some of “you” are going to ask me “what have you done?”  I and others have taken the last pieces of information that came from “you” and posted in some of the transit center that operators frequent, so that they can read the most recent information that “you” have put out.   Some of “us” know that operators don’t always go up to the union board in their individual garages (due to long schedules of straits, split shifts and extra board work) and read the information in real time, this “is” one of the biggest negatives “we” have as a union.  So to do something different than “you”, “we” decided that everyone needs to understand, this is a different union, than the, DO NOTHING, of the past.
For the leaders that I have talked to in the past, I AM CALLING “YOU” ALL OUT!!  “We” need to rebuild this union so that “ALL MEMBERS” can be involved in, NOW and NOT LATER, when it’s too late.  No more hoping waiting, it’s July 31, 2012, August is next, “WE” ARE RUNNING OUT OF TIME!

All too many ATU members can identify with a bus driver who is attacked. And some even know what it feels like when a battered driver tries to contact a dispatcher through an on-board call box and… nothing happens.  
That’s what happened on July 19, when a rider assaulted HART bus operator Colin Brown after entering the bus and paying the fare, hitting him 20 times with her fist.  Brown had to use his cell phone to reach the agency’s dispatch center. Emergency responders finally took him to the hospital where he was treated for a concussion and other injuries. Read more here. 
With a deep concern for the safety of its members, Local 1593- Tampa along with the ATU International are demanding that the HART board “immediately intervene and restore our confidence in being able to perform our duties in a safe work environment.” 
ATU and the Transport Workers Union (TWU) continue to address the issue of attacks on transit worker through a joint committee that’s working hard to find ways to protect transit workers.  
“Last month a Los Angeles bus driver was shot to death while on duty. A New Jersey bus operator was stabbed seven times. Lower profile offenses such as spitting and verbal abuse are becoming part of the job,” ATU President Larry Hanley said. “The public is also at-risk. Transit agencies must put the safety and security of their operators and passengers first.” Read full statement.

So I'm Intensely Curious

About making a scheduled 'meeting' with Beth DeHamel as she requested on the ninth. Of course, I'm not going to just go there and bow to her unquestionable logic. What I want to do is turn the tables on her.

My most base idea is to demand a compromise. I'll hear what you have to say about the budget, but by that, you have to give me answers and they better mean something, because I'm going to take those answers as gold and I'm going to make them known. Pretty much this will be an interview so you better make sure you're telling the truth. That kind of thing. It'll make em look good if they're making big promises and telling the truth, it'll show if they give half-answers and whatnot, and if they're straight up lying, smile, because you're on candid camera.

And I'd ask questions, too. I'd want to know what they're truly planning for the service cuts- when they say they're splitting the 12 and 94, will the 94 run all day? At what frequency? And what are the base ideas for next year? Any plans of putting back into the system? If so, what? If not, why? What are the plans for the Saragoza Million?

Odds are, if I traded questions with her, I'd bring an OPALite or two with me. Maybe it'd be Jared, the policy guy. I'd love for it to be Lynne and Terrence, the OITs with attitude and gumption. It'd just be nice to have someone back me up, especially since I'm apparently shaming them and all.

I don't know just how well this would go over, which is why I'm bringing this to the editing room- here. Give me some ideas! What terms do I set? And what do I do if they get accepted? I would love to turn this into my own sort of setup for OPAL to get answers. I'll be going in as a journalist, practically. :P

I'm fed up with TriMet's management and their lack of transparency and accountability, and the fact that they really don't seem to care because they have the power. But what I'm really upset about was exactly what I talked to Ms. DeHamel about when I ended the conversation between us.

Trimet driver Larry Porter makes Best of Portland 2012

TriMet driver Larry Porter was the most talked-about man in the country for one night in May. On a Wednesday afternoon, Porter, 48, was about to begin his route when he saw a man by the side of the road beating a woman. He called 911, but for two minutes, he watched with growing anxiety. He yelled that the police were coming, but that just made the man punch harder. Feeling he had to do something, Porter pulled the bus over. At 5-foot-10 and over 300 pounds, he needed barely any effort to knock the man flat on his back. Then he easily pinned him down for the 20 minutes it took the police to arrive. The story made the night’s news and got syndicated across the country. Porter says friends called from out of town, but the attention became too intense for this accidental hero, and he and his wife had to leave town for a weekend. “It’s like I told my boss,” Porter said: “I’m not looking for a pat on the back.” ALEX TOMCHAK SCOTT.

I was contemplating going to the meeting tomorrow and making quite a scene but after conversations and contemplation I have come to the conclusion that the WORLD WIDE MOVEMENT TO DESTROY LABOR HAS HIT ME PERSONALLY and hereby submit my surrender to the forces of evil. If Trimet operators aren't willing to fight then its hopeless and I am wasting my effort at the sock puppet meetings.I'll consider myself lucky that I am getting anything for retirement, and who knows how long that will last now that KING MCFARLANE rules without any way of stopping him.
