Houston METRO targets worker safety during summer’s extreme heat
Rail operators, and riders had better brace themselves for signal failures with no defect call in response. A recent decision by Rick Kindig MOW Manager in regards to call in policy is going to put the final nail in Trimets coffin for getting any signal maintainer response to after hour callins. I expect that we will see full participation in the overtime boycot by the maintainers. 100 degree days are notorious for causing signal failures and I fully intend to let the phone keep right on ringing as the temperature rises. Suck it Trimet management.
- More organizing. After about two years of organizing bus riders with a limited team of organizers and volunteers, we were able to turn out about 100 bus riders and allies to the TriMet board meeting for the budget decision. It was a mix of community leaders, first-time civic participants and progressive allies from a host of various sectors, including public health, housing, youth services and workforce development. And yet it wasn’t enough to move an embattled and shell-shocked TriMet board that was being led by the hand of agency staff. Fare hikes and service cuts will always be the de facto response to a budget gap until bus riders organize and mobilize in numbers to keep them from being the path of least resistance.

Get a load of this. The AC failed at Center for a couple of hours yesterday, and almost immediately a memo via email went out advising all office staff that if they must leave work because of no AC to let their supervisor know before they leave. Yet as far as they're concerned it could be 105 degrees and the maintenance staff, and operators who get stuck with a bus with no AC just have to deal with it. You either have to mark off or worse. What a crock of shit!
Just think… it will cost TriMet $1.49 billion to build the Portland to Milwaukie max line at $204,110,099 per mile . And it will only take 620,833,333 full fare passengers for to pay for it.
According to TriMet's statistics they had 41.2
And lets not forget that the 15 year payoff is only if the ticket machines are working and we know that will never happen with the poor leadership of fare machine supervisor Robert "Golden Lips" Wagner. (He got his job by kissing ass and not being a good leader or technician.)
TriMet stupidity… PRICELESS!

EDIT: EVEN MORE ADDENDUM
+Weekend service on the Broadway/Concordia corridor along line 17 will be bumped up from every 40 minutes to every 32-35.
-However, TriMet will be cutting off a section from frequent service. Service between Tigard and King City, formerly 17-20 minutes with TriMet, will now be every 33 minutes, 7 days a week (although rush hour service will still be at the same levels of line 94 and then some, but the 12 will not serve that area any longer). It also, as stated, loses off-peak service to Portland without a transfer.
I think that it can somewhat officially be said that line 76/78 Hall Blvd will have frequent service between Beaverton and Tigard. As of September trips will be added to line 76 to complete that last step to the corridor being frequent.
As it stands, the corridor operates on 54/56 rules- they run synchronized schedules so one comes every 15-17 minutes throughout weekdays, with individual trips South and West of Tigard running every 35 minutes.
It mostly operates on the same rules on Saturday and Sunday (to run 17 minutes all day) but the span is incredibly clipped (10am-5pm). The new trips on line 76 will increase the span to 8am-7pm, which is about the same as most 'frequent service' routes. So, it can officially be considered frequent, even if frequent is nothing like it was and nothing like it should be.
In another frequent service surprise, line 9-Powell will now run frequent service all the way to Gresham, 7 days a week. However, this does come with a decrease of weekend service, which will drop to every 22-23 minutes instead of 20. Still, the segment of Powell past 98th has been neglected service-wise for a long time, and it's about time it's been filled in. It's nice to see TriMet can do something to improve.
Finally, if we want to be technical, line 70 will also be up to the level of common frequent service on its entire route save for the span- service will stop completely on 33rd Avenue at 5pm Sundays and on the 12th Avenue section at 7pm Sundays
Other unspoken surprises
-Line 16 will still end at SW 6th and Oak for its downtown terminus, restricting riders who formerly took line 17 through the entirety of downtown. Also, despite what it seems, trips to St. Johns from downtown will not be much faster; the turnaround at 44th and Yeon will ensure that trips still take 30 minutes as opposed to line 17's 30-35.
-Eastbound service on Line 36 will end at only 4pm, missing the entire rush hour. In addition, line 37, despite running through a heavy industrial area and residential area, only run one morning and evening rush hour trip. These two routes have the distinction of earliest ending time for a route, surpassing even lines 55 and 84.
+Improved headways on weekdays along NE 102nd Avenue with line 87 being added. Line 87 will also complete most of the former line 15's routing, serving 102nd to Prescott and then Sandy. This restores service from Gateway to the MHCC branch in Maywood Park.
+Line 4 Headways on weekdays will increase back up to every 15 minutes instead of every 17-20. (although whether or not that will settle all those late trips on it has yet to be seen)
-The line 15 schedules are even MORE confusing than before if you can believe that.
-Headways on the new line 11 will reduce from the 16's 35 minute span to a new hourly span.
Otherwise, things are just as they read on the page. Just thought I'd keep you all informed.
Providence Bridge Pedal is this Sunday, August 12, from 5 a.m. to approximately noon. Be prepared for crowded MAX trains, as there will likely be more bikes on board than usual. Nineteen bus lines are rerouted due to bridge closures and trains cross the Bridge Pedal route, so add extra time to get to your destination and expect delays.
The one thing missing from this whole discussion are the drivers and the giant turd sandwich they eat on a daily basis. Whenever I witness an "episode of terror" on one of my rides, I can't help wonder how the hell the drivers deal with this stuff day over day. Then you get the right-wingers bitching about how overpaid they are and the grotesque benefits they enjoy. Hell, in my opinion, they deserve to make more than doctors do for what they put up with. They surely have more lives entrusted in their hands

As, you know you have been ordered on more than one occasion by the Employment relations Board to make me whole for any losses incurred due to your unlawful conduct, including reimbursement for salary increases I did not receive and contributions toward insurance premium costs I paid. According to my calculations, I should have been paid a total of $3,900.00 in wages and insurance premiums.
I am willing to resolve this matter informally through immediate payment of $3,900.00. If I do not receive these wages and insurance premiums within two weeks of the date of this letter, I will file a claim with the Oregon Labor Commissioner or in state court seeking all the damages allowed by law.
I am also requesting that you cease and desist from communicating to me in regards to or attempting to implement any action to collect money you think I owe for this highly illegal retroactive health care policy. It's January 31, and I want to go to the zoo. The bus pulls up to the stop and I flash the February monthly pass I just bought. The bus driver explains to me that it's January. I go home and get 40 cents and return to the bus stop. The bus is 20 minutes late.
I take an empty seat in the back. Two stops later, a filthy, boisterous man boards. He chooses the seat next to me. He smells like cigarettes, booze, and urine. He's in the mood for conversation. He begins to tell me a story about his old landlord, the government, maybe the CIA. It's not very cohesive. Spittle is raining down on me, and the other people on the bus think that we are friends. The MAX station is a few stops away so I bid my new acquaintance adieu and get on the train.
The MAX stops on the middle of the Steel Bridge and I realize I need to take a shit. Badly. Fifteen minutes, and nothing. People are becoming restless. My bowels are becoming restless. I am a grown man. I believe I can hold it until the zoo. Another 20 minutes pass and I am not so sure.
I begin to pray. The train starts moving, thank god. I clench until the Washington Park station. As I'm about to disembark, a plainclothes TriMet officer stops me and asks for my ticket. I show him my February pass. "It's January," he explains as he writes me a ticket. There are no functioning bathrooms in sight.
I get to the zoo and realize I left my debit card at home. I have no money on me. Defeated and humiliated, I walk to Washington Park and take a shame shit in the bushes. On the ride home I smell like poop and no one sits by me.

In essence, she said she could not meet with me personally, but she 'encouraged' me to attend the board meeting tomorrow where she was making a presentation for "Fund Balance and Contingency" and offered to talk to me about it after the meeting.
I just gave her an honest reply; I told her that I was not sure if I could make it to the board meeting because I was transporting my sister to a day camp and I doubted that TriMet would be able to get me there in time. Isn't that sort of ironic, TriMet?
I'll make it towards the end of the meeting, because hell I'm going to give testimony since Public Forum is open.

I guess you could argue that having the two together provides frequency, and I suppose that could be true, except for a few things. 1) Line 63 runs every 40 minutes midday while line 83 runs every 20 minutes, and most of the time the 63 leaves the Oregon Zoo anywhere between two and five minutes after the 83. Not useful, now is it?
Great. We’re stuck at the Sunset Transit Center with seven miles of Max cars stopped ahead of us. As the driver suggests over the P.A., “You may want to take the 20 bus into downtown,” I’m already trotting down the platform.
About half the trainload is right with me. The 20 Burnside to Gresham arrives like a prompt ambulance and we cram into it.

Heat causes the rails to expand, and it also causes the aerial power lines that feed the trains' pantagraphs to sag. This means that they have to go vewy, vewy slowly in order to avoid derailments or other damage to "infrastructure".
Buses don't have such issues, but there are two big problems with them: they aren't cool, and they're inexpensive. Tri-Met, which has morphed from a transit agency into a development agency, hates buses.

Or, there were problems with the lower deck of the Steel Bridge, too (among other things)
Amtrak Train 14 (northbound Coast Starlight) was recorded as leaving Salem at 4:22PM and didn't get into Portland Union Station until 9 o'clock. Over 4 1/2 hours to get from Salem to Portland.
A rider's companion notes that 1/2 hour or more was spent sitting on the other side of the Steel Bridge waiting for heat-related issues to be taken care of. It was also heard that a woman rider with a walker did not make it off the train in Salem.
In addition, southbound Amtrak Cascades train 507 arrived in Portland late due to heat/weather issues where it was held for the Steel Bridge issues until almost an hour after the next southbound train, 509 had arrived.
They are the most annoying people in Portland Metro, they need these cards to educate themselves, I got nothing but rage for them sometimes, but we must coexist......to a point, LOL
