First I really want to say Sunday was a good turn out for the members. I would love to see that many bodies there every union meeting because we are really going to have to lean on each other to get through this. I know a lot of people was surprised that Ron through his hat back in the ring. Folks let me tell you something. I have been here at ATU for a little over 29 years. The managment team that we have at TriMet now are going to eat us alive if we don’t get someone with history who know how to play hard ball. We spend the best years of our life on our job and then the managment want to steal from the back of the front line folks. Neal go out to the press and say we are the cause of the finanical short fall, but look how he go out and hire none union employees and pay them big bucks to try and bust the union. He speaks like a snake. We all made a few mistakes in our lifes. No body walks on water. Pull your head out of the clouds and use the gray marrow in the brain and think this through. You don’t have to like a person but respect what they can do for all of us. I know what kind of contracts Ron has gotten out in the pass and can do now. We need the knowdledge that Ron and Jon have to move us forward. I am sick and tired of seeing our supervisors being forced to do jobs they didn’t sign up for, dispatchers shifts being changed with a whim, overtime dropped because managers are saying don’t fill the shift and our inspectors are almost invisible . Don’t let me get started on my office I could be here all night. I decided to run for Monthly Rated Employee Executive Boaed officer because I want to start writting officer reports again to inform our folks what is going on and not leave it up to the rumor mill. Fight for your folks. At this stage of the game I’m willing to give them hell. Neil McFarlane needs to go and take a few more with you. The tax payers (us) deserve better. What TriMet's rail equipment should be...

This is the interior of a former Long Island Railroad P72 coach, used extensively in commuter rail service from New York east along the diesel lines on Long Island.  These cars entered service in the 1950s and were retired in the late 1990s.

This particular coach is now used on the Mount Hood Railroad as a tourist coach.  Note the 2x3 seating and the facing seats.  There is also very little legroom.  There is however a restroom.

Most awfully, a 22-year-old law student was beaten and raped in Nottingham after finding herself 20p short of the full fare and attempting to walk home at night. Is this some sort of epidemic? Theoretical Musing on the Supersoldier Gillig Phantoms

With the new 3000 buses coming into service gradually, there's already been talk that within a day's worth of service, the new buses are already breaking down or glitching up. It's causing me to think back on the 1400 series and realize that it's a miracle that they're still alive.

I did some guesstimating today to see just how productive they are. These aren't hard truths but they're something to mull over, for sure.

Let's start off with the basics. The 1400 Gillig Phantoms have been active for 22 years, since 1990. They're still pretty commonplace today, primarily on lines 1, 22, 23, 25 and 94 for most blatant example. Their junior forms, the 30-foot 1600 series, are 21 years old, being active since 1991. They're used on several lines that require smaller buses, primarily in the eastside. You can see them on lines 28, 29, 34, 80 and 81, and on the west side, lines 39 and 51. These buses have three or four years on me age-wise, which in and of itself is impressive.

Now add to that the fact that these buses run at least five days out of the week, sometimes seven. They definitely worked seven days a week for most of their 22 years. With a bit of math and give-and-take, these buses have worked approximately 7,500 days of its lifetime, or around 95% of its total days. These buses work just as hard as the average person does, only they don't get days or holidays off, which is pretty crazy.

Crazier than that, these buses have been active throughout the entire day for the most part, albeit less so recently for the 1400s. Still, you'd be hard pressed to miss them. They were definitely running all day, ever day, when they were the newest buses off of the market, and for most of their lifetime it was probably the same case. I'll give it the average of 10 hours a day factoring in give-or-take. With that total in mind, we have 75,000 hours of their life working. Have you ever done 75,000 hours of anything? 75,000 hours, or 27 million seconds, or 4.5 million minutes? That's a staggering amount of time to be doing anything, much less working that entire time. I dunno, maybe I'm just an inexperienced kid who hasn't even been alive 75,000 hours.

And if we're talking lifetime miles, it gets even better. Let's say on an average day, a bus drives around 60 miles. Much more when they originally came out, considerably less nowadays since they're mostly restricted to rush hour lines and local infrequent routes. 60 miles a day is 450,000 lifetime miles for these buses. That, if you ask me, is insane.

I'll definitely leave this disclaimer: THIS IS NOT EXACT MATH. This is primarily guesstimating with some give and take thrown in to give this theoretical example. But this theoretical example is probably very close to the truth. I know nowadays it's not fun to ride a 1400. They have no AC, the benches are like sitting on rocks, they're bumpy, noisy and unstable. The fact that most of these buses have survived all of this work and the hardships of being a bus is just incredible to me, and the fact that they still work baffles me. I think that despite it all, we have to give the 1990/91 Gillig Phantoms some credit and respect for all of their hard work.

Mcfarlane to 'TRUE UP" driver for unused fuel burnt up and any costs not covered by insurance


Head honcho Mcfarlane has announced that the operator involved in this burnt up vehicle will be billed for the unused fuel that was lost and be responsible for any costs that insurance does not cover.
"True up" will now be used in all accidents that occur in Trimet vehicles and all operators driving the vehicles at time of crash will be responsible to 'TRUE UP' all damages.
"Refusal to true up when you have an accident will lead to disciplinary procedures" says Mcfarlane 
(the post is a joke but I wouldn't put it past him)

The employer is First Transit — a division of the giant UK-based multinational First Group. Under contracts with TriMet, First Transit runs TriMet Lift, a transit service for seniors and the disabled, from three Portland-area locations. At two of the locations, workers are represented by Amalgamated Transit Union Local 757, but at the SE 92nd and Powell yard, they’re nonunion. Up to now, anyway.
Workers weren’t surprised when First Transit operations manager Linda Ciavara, caught off guard, wouldn’t say whether the company will voluntarily recognize their choice to unionize. So the next morning, union supporters filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board. The federal agency strives to schedule an election within 42 days to determine if workers really want a union. [The fact that 112 of the 166 workers might have signed union authorization cards isn’t enough to demonstrate their choice to join a union under U.S. labor law; the employer first gets a chance to hire union avoidance consultants and go at workers at mandatory meetings.

And now we have a long time driver in the hospital with life threatening injuries. 
This is what comes when you have a management that speaks so negatively about its employees publicly.
Constantly repeating over and over how great a bus drivers life is  with the aid of the bought and paid for media creates negativity in the public's mind as setting the scenario for things like the Leonard James incident. I knew it was a matter of time before a driver would be severely hurt.

Now i have received reports how the low life ASSHOLE Mcfarlane, who has shown us over and over he cares nothing about the welfare of his employees and is willing to bend and break laws in order to show "who is boss', that he is going to violate the terms again and deny COLA's  and other benefits to union employees.

Personally I have always said giving away our right to strike was one of the largest failures during the reign Of Jon Hunt

It's important to show Mcfarlane and the public who it is that actually runs this transit system.
Shut down Trimet for a week or two and see how things pan out.

It couldn't be any worse than it already is for unionized employees.

There is absolutely no reason to work at Trimet except the hope you will get above average wages.
Of course your life is on the line so you can get a little more money.

Only an ignorant person would go for that. There are plenty of ignorant people around however.

Police: Man attacked a TriMet bus driver with a knife. Suspect restrained by passengers. 4 people total to hospital. Conditions unknown.

 Driver of the 33 bus involved in the stabbling is a 53 year old male with stab wounds in the abdomen. He was transported to OHSU

Four people have been transported from the Oregon City incident on Molalla Ave. 3 taken to trauma center. Sunrise crew working on the story.

Light rail has been so gosh darn dependable lately

Due to a tree limb that fell on the MAX Blue and Red line tracks in Old Town earlier this evening, a portion of the overhead power wire system was damaged and repairs are expected late into the the evening. MAX Blue and Red line service is disrupted and shuttle buses are providing alternative service between SW 3rd & Morrison and the Rose Quarter. Expect delays through the end of service.

Poor pedestrian facilities heading to/from Ruby Jct

NW 11 Mile Ave/SE 199th Ave in Gresham

Even though it's the street between a major TriMet operations facility and the nearby MAX station, one which operators, employees and others walk down daily, it does not have the "world-class" pedestrian facilities that some here seem to think it would have given the rail nature of those places.

(I'm told that the street is like this because sidewalks were not required when Ruby Jct was built; a recent TriMet expansion fronting one portion of the street did include a sidewalk.)

I'm virtually positive this issue was different than one a person here experienced.  Note the time (1 PM) among the other details.  And according to a later article it was "one of the older streetcars (that) broke down on Saturday".

I got the call at 5:42 this evening, and [Rose] left me the message, and then he called me again at like 8:50,” the union president said. “I’ve had this conversation with him before – if it’s something he needs to get out quickly, to text me, and I can break away.”
Hansen said he doesn’t think the union will ultimately pay a price for unfriendly media coverage about its legal dispute with TriMet over past benefits. The transit agency is attempting to retroactively charge its workers and retirees for medical costs their previous insurance plan would have covered.
Hansen says TriMet’s actions are illegal, and workers will win in court.
“When the truth is all said and done, I don’t think it’s going to hurt,” Hansen said of Friday’s story. “They’re going to be found unlawfully implementing their decisions again. … We’re going to be right in the end.”
