A male and female were smoking on the platform at Gateway T.C.; I asked them to please put out their cigarettes. They proceeded to do so, but, they used our T.V.M. to do so. I asked them to please do not vandalize our fixtures and use the ground to extinguish their smoking materials.

Another Trimet crony returns

TriMet recently completed a nationwide search (another phony search eh?) for the new Executive Director of Finance and Administration. After vetting numerous qualified applicants, TriMet selected Dave Auxier for his depth of knowledge and ability to immediately understand our current fiscal challenges. Dave served as TriMet’s Finance executive from 2003- 2009 and recently returned in an interim position. He is working closely with the executive team to ensure TriMet’s long-term financial stability.

TriMet overtime: 'Exhaustion has become part of the culture' at transit agency

On the basic level, this is an issue of Public Policy vs GM Policy. If every driver is able to come to work, the system would work. But reality is, driving a bus destroys your body. The bouncing, vibrations, door opening and closing in extreme heat and cold. Drivers will become physically unable to work (Workers Comp) or be ill. Some have to take off time to take their families for appointments. So there are always drivers who will not be driving their run.

TRIMET IS THE ONLY PARTY IMPEDING UNION NEGOTIATIONS

It's not getting enough press coverage. After exposing the lengths that Trimet executives will go to prevent any non flattering information (Joe Rose overtime story) to go public, the attempts of Trimet executives to keep the contractual negotiations secret tell the true story of Trimet.
Run by a  class of arrogant and entitled executives, who basically get away with murder in cahoots with that board of sock puppets, they are the only party holding up union negotiations.

The executives should be given their walking papers and fired.
They have multiple failures on their watch.
Trimet is in a mess, the executives in charge thrive.

Station Agent Mike Arronson keeps Trimet rolling
The 'station agent' is the person who struggles daily to make sure runs are covered and minimize run cancellations. They have to juggle the various personalities that are bus drivers and attempt to keep them happy and productive.
This particular station agent is most likely the best station agent at Trimet.(followed closely by Betsy Welter)  Always friendly, always trying to see that operator needs are met and hugely loved by the operators at Merlo garage. Never heard one bad thing about this guy and never had one single negative interaction with him when I worked there. I had my problems with many of the station agents employed by Trimet, but this guy sets the standard for excellence as a station agent.
For all the pontificating from Mcfarlane and Lomax, if they left tomorrow nobody would care.
If Mike Arronson left tomorrow there would be plenty of upset drivers. People like Mike Arronson keep Trimet rolling.

The Tri-Met chief executive obviously is a capital projects man, and not an operations man. Portland's transit agency is horribly insolvent, and so the capital projects are going to end soon. Joe Rose Vs Shelly Lomax on Face Out Loud

We have the usual dishonesty being put forth by the Trimet people, attempting to link the union to the failed hours of service policy. The union has no responsibility for assigning work shifts. That falls strictly to the Trimet management.(Bruce Hansens comments regarding this story are here )The fact that Trimet management has chosen to abuse the hours of service policy is not the responsibility of the union, it falls squarely on the managements shoulders. The hours of service policy establishes the parameters which Trimet management must work under. It does not imply that the management must take full advantage of this policy. Management is free to hire the appropriate staffing but chooses to hire executives rather than drivers.
Original OPB production is here!

TIME TO CHANGE TRIMET GOVERNANCE VIA ORS 267.020

      (1) The governing body of the transit district shall transfer title to, and possession of, the transit system and of all books, records, files, documents, and other property of the transit district to the metropolitan district.
      (2) The metropolitan district shall be responsible for all the liabilities and obligations imposed upon or assumed by the transit district.
      (3) For purposes of mass transit the metropolitan district shall have all the rights, powers, privileges and immunities, and be subject to all the duties and obligations, of a mass transit district under ORS 267.010 to 267.390, insofar as they are consistent with ORS chapter 268.
      (4) The boundaries of the metropolitan district shall, for purposes of mass transit, be extended to encompass all the territory of the transit district.
      (5) The transit district shall be dissolved and the offices of its directors terminated. [1969 c.643 §40; 1997 c.833 §26]

TRIMET OBSTRUCTIONISM

There are many reasons why Mcfarlane should be fired but this this takes the cake.
Intentionally trying to obstruct an investigation is a serious violation of public duty.
I hazard to say it borders on criminal behavior.

Of course, McFarlane's statement that TriMet has long wanted to address the issue of operator fatigue run contrary to the agency's attitude about supplying The Oregonian with public records for its investigation.
At times, agency officials -- who charged the newspaper more than $3,750 for documents -- refused to run the newspaper's requests for information in its databases, arguing that such queries weren't required under state public records laws. When the newspaper then agreed to pay for the complete database of driver schedules from the past nine months, amounting to about 8,000 pages, TriMet's general counsel denied requests for the information to be supplied in a spreadsheet, text document or other format that could easily be moved into a searchable database. Instead, the agency insisted on converting the information into an unwieldy PDF format that required pain-staking copying and pasting into a database.
When The Oregonian attempted to get the complete record of the October 2011 MAX crash, TriMet denied the request, saying many of the documents were protected because they pertained to a personnel matter. After an appeal by The Oregonian, the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office sided with the newspaper, saying the information was so alarming that the public had a right to see it.

TriMet driver fatigue: General Manager calls for overtime audit, better policing of sleepiness | OregonLive.com

Neils Bullshit

When you read through Neils latest Bullshit what you will see is there is no mention of structural improvements. Virtually every single full time run at Trimet mandates overtime. Not one word about scheduling and the mess they have made of operators lives with long split shift days and runs with out breaks. Not one word of the incompetence  of management for allowing  a shortage of drivers. Attempts to once again pass the buck on to the union are laughable. Mcfarlane has been such a miserable failure since they crowned him king that its embarrassing at this point that he remains General Manager.

Report: Some TriMet drivers work to exhaustion | kgw.com Portland

Good story on riding the bus

A stranger puts a heartless bus driver in his place:

As I dug through my bag, the bus driver started explaining in a rather pointed tone that the unfortunate stranger had to get off the bus if he couldn’t pay. He returned some reasonable excuses that he had lost his cash. The whole thing was sad and I thought the bus driver could have handled his stress a little more gracefully, instead of being so rude to someone in need. Digging, digging, I had nearly uncovered some change to drop into the chute, but someone else beat me to the punch — this awesome stranger.
With rivaling venom, the awesome stranger interjected, “It’s okay. It looks like someone’s having a really bad day and needs to take a time out.” It wasn’t really to the bus driver directly, but I think he got the point. I’ll never forget how he totally put the bus driver in his place before sliding a spare dollar into the bill acceptor, essentially rendering the (evil) bus driver powerless. It felt like a victory for humanity to see the person in need welcomed onto the warm bus. It’s really not something you see everyday.

LETS TAKE A LOOK AT THE JOE ROSE CHAT

He did a good piece of research on his fatigue story. The only problem I had with his piece is somehow linking the union to all of this.
The union has nothing to do with handing out work assignments and the linking of operator shortage to the 'benefits' is a lie since the arbitration has changed all of that.

No more defined retirement for new employees and 2nd rate health insurance for everybody including current employees. Yet Joe and the liars who run Trimet try to ignore the fact that they already got their way. Of course all of this goes right over the heads of Trimet bus drivers who couldn't care less what the contract says as long as their take home pay bulges with dollars right now.

Reddit readers not impressed with Shelly's response

http://www.reddit.com/r/Portland/comments/162gkq/our_response_to_the_oregonian_trimet_overtime/

THE NEW DISPATCH SYSTEM IS SERIOUSLY FLAWED

I had a conversation with an 'insider' at Trimet that is very familiar with dispatch procedures and equipment.

This is a recap of the conversation I had.

The term used to describe the system is "disaster"
"They use 2 headsets, one on the left ear and one on the right ear!"
"They have 3 keyboards, 2 phone lines, 2 foot pedal systems"

At this point I was laughing hysterically at the thought of such a bizarre situation, especially since we are supposed to be so advanced technologically speaking.

They continued: "the system times out after two minutes and most operators are unaware of this. This system sucks"

"If they don't wear the two headsets they have to unplug from one system and plug into the other system. And if you don't plug in at the right time you lose everything!"

"the dispatchers are being driven insane and fighting with each other"
"Tactically they have not even been trained on it"
"they have been handed a bunch of papers and told to 'read that when you can'"!
"when you are out there on the road and call in with an emergency the dispatcher has to go through all these little clips to figure out how to talk to you"
"the crap doesn't even work, operators are on the line thinking that dispatchers have hung up on them"
"on the old system the dispatcher can over ride the operator and tell them to calm down whatever, but on the new system they can't do that".

I asked who the hell would purchase a system like that: "Dennis Van Dyke"

"when they purchased this equipment they didnt bother to take a dispatcher with them"

"the arrogance of these people is remarkable, its like the Woodlawn situation, Trimet could change the location of the bus layover there. Lets say there was a flood or something, Trimet would change the location of the layover in an instant. So all the stuff they tell the Woodlawn residents is bullshit!"

I'd like to add that I also had a conversation with a dispatcher I know this evening and he told me his physician has encouraged him to mark off work as his back is being injured by the configuration that he is forced to sit with.

HANGING WITH THE BOYS

LET'S MOVE ON!

Trimet and ATU 757 are locked in a battle over transparency at the negotiations.
I have a solution to the problem.
Why not ban the public and the press but record the meetings and release the recordings of the meetings?
Problem solved right?
Let's move forward! This pissing contest has to stop!

Trimet runs on overtime

When I started at Trimet one of the things you had to endure was the 'line training' That's where you do a full time run with a 'line trainer' who is a full time operator.

Make a long story short, some of those line trainers were good and some not so good. I got stuck with one of the 'not so good' line trainers that was a full 12 hours long. It started at 6am and ended at 6pm. On that day I almost quit Trimet. I had never in my life experienced what I thought was work related abuse. The line trainer made me drive almost the whole time and I was so miserable I almost walked right off the job right there.

It was at that moment where I knew I would never be a full time operator at Trimess.  12 hours of driving a bus is not something a 'normal' human being would ever wish on themselves. I stayed part time at Trimet and it was a reasonably decent job up until the Mcfarlane regime took power and ruined what was left of our work environment.

Portland Transit Lane has done some research which shows us how much work is expected of Trimet full time bus drivers. Of course there will be  high sickout rate  when the rigors of holding such a job require such huge personal sacrifice. The lifestyle involved in being a full time bus operator at Trimet is downright horrendous in my opinion. Transit needs a complete overhaul in it's structure.  Transit will continue failing as long as it follows this failed structure. Not only is the current structure expensive but it leads to many hours off the job due to work related sicknesses.

TriMet collisions

Oregonian

Shelly Lomax's weak kneed boiler plate response to Joe Rose Article

(the real question that she should have answered is why did you and your minions put up such resistance to Joe getting the info)

The Oregonian has an article they call “TriMet overtime: ‘Exhaustion has become part of the culture’ at transit agency.” We wanted to take this opportunity to provide some further information and to assure you that we have a safe system that you can trust.

Michael Anderson says clear sign of an organization that, from top to bottom, sometimes simply operates with a lack of common sense.

The Oregonian’s Joe Rose demonstrates the importance of strong daily newspapers today with an eight-month investigation into outrageous driver overtime practices at TriMet that a Harvard expert calls "categorically unsafe."
"The budget-battered agency allows operators to manipulate work rules to log as many as 22 hours in a 24-hour period," Rose reports.
The result, Rose shows through numerous anecdotes, is drivers who regularly fall asleep behind the wheel.

Four shocking passages in The Oregonian’s investigation of TriMet drivers who fall asleep at the wheel | Portland Afoot

So this is the 'famous' Trimet dispatcher Grant

I always wondered what he looked like. Didn't expect him to look like this. Here he is in one of those crazy new BDS setups.

CHEAPER TO WORK PEOPLE TO DEATH THAN TO HIRE MORE PEOPLE

Hey, its the American way, some people get rich and other people starve!
TriMet, on the other hand, appears to be setting itself up for catastrophe, Harvard's Czeisler said. "The notion that drivers getting three hours of sleep between shifts are still safe is outrageous," he said. "It's categorically unsafe."
