BY THE WAY-YOUR RIGHT TO MAKE YOUR OWN DECISIONS HAS JUST BEEN REMOVED
Resolution 13-01-04 Authorizing a Smoke-Free Work Environment Policy passed unanimously yesterday taking away your freedom choice starting in July
On what planet is this oppression? Smoking kills, and when people smoke around others, especially at bus stops, they steal other people's right to choose and force them to inhale smoke. Especially prevalent when you're in closed or small quarters, like bus stops.
Smoking is not a "right", and employers do have the right to establish workplace rules. And as long as employers are paying healthcare, they have a limited right in that regard.
Many companies prohibit smoking on company property - Union Pacific will not even hire you if you smoke, and if you are currently employed you are REQUIRED to stop smoking (UP will pay for the smoking cessation program at 100%) but if you do not succeed, you are terminated. This is a large company whose employees almost never come in contact with the general public!
I don't have a problem with the smoking shelters at the garages, but at transit centers I should not have to walk by a bunch of Supervisors (and sometimes a driver) smoking away while I have my kids in tow. And if I were an employee I would not want to climb into a supervisor truck whose last occupant smoked inside of it and I have to smell it.
TriMet's healthcare matters are already front and center. The public has spoken loud and clear that smoking is a public health and safety issue...there are bigger fish to fry, this one should just let be. If you smoke - give it up. If you can't, you're going to have to do it off the property.

I'm against government making decisions like this.
Bring back designated smoking areas
Who is talking about bus stops? We are talking about outdoor designated smoking locations for operators at the garages.
