ERIK HALSTEAD ON THE SCANDAL

 Good, Oregonian.
Now keep on the pressure - why is TriMet operating 23 year old buses that have horrible maintenance and reliability records, when other transit agencies routinely replace their buses, following federal guidelines, at 12-15 years of age?

Why does TriMet routinely cut bus service, while favoring MAX riders?

Why is TriMet continuing to run a horrendously unpopular and expensive commuter rail line at $17/boarding ride, while cutting "expensive" $3/boarding ride buses?

Why is TriMet spending millions on building a new headquarters, and not using that money to enhance service?

Why does TriMet employ a Capital Projects department of over 100; and a massive I.T. staff including nearly 100 software engineers and programmers - for what?

Why does TriMet employ a massive marketing department; yet I have not seen a single ad (television, radio, newspaper, print, billboard, etc.) advertising a bus route?

Why do TriMet drivers routinely get admitted to the hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning from their 23 year old buses? What about the safety of both the driver (and carbon monoxide poisioning does cause drowsiness to start) and the riders on board?

Shall I continue?

Don't contracts with the Federal government, the railroad and maybe others insist that they do so? Also, I'm not sure I'd call it "horrendously unpopular" given the number of people I've seen on it. It's not like OnTrack in Syracuse.

Where is this new headquarters they are building? If you are talking about their moving into existing (but different) space, what about the money saved on leases that will not be renewed? Also, at least some of that money is coming from Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail project funding (since they need an expanded operations center and are having to vacate some of their offices) and can't be used for service. In addition, the Center Street building is due for some updates.

Maybe because they're in the middle of a large, complex capital project?

a massive I.T. staff including nearly 100 software engineers and programmers

I do not recall there being that many people. What is the source of that figure?

Maybe you need to see about having your employer host a transportation fair.
