HOW TO DRIVE AN OLD BUS

THIS WEEKS READERSHIP

DID U MISS THE MAX RUNNING WITH THE DOOR OPEN?

TRIMET VOICEMAIL

COFFEE POWER

A garbled human exclamation pierces the train behind me, loud enough to make me jump.  A moment later, it happens again.  It is unhappy.  The sound repeats and repeats. It is like coughing and talking at the same time, and doing both badly.  I turn to see.  The vocalizations are coming from a person in a wheelchair.  I can only see the back of his balding head.  No one is acknowledging him.

Tourette's maybe?  Choking?

As the man continues in this way, I get up and walk to a seat past him from where I can see if he actually needs help.  He is wearing only light clothes, though the temperature is close to freezing.  The clothes are old and dirty.  He is shivering violently and coughing.  He is a portrait of misery.

What's happening and why so many angry abusive operators

There is an actual psychological syndrome called 'anger displacement' that I believe is happening to many Trimet operators. Operators are being abused constantly at work by the Trimet management so they are 'displacing' their anger towards riders.
I remember myself having come from an abusive meeting with Trimet managers on more than one occasion and being sent to drive a bus and how hard it was to keep my anger off the poor riders who have nothing to do with any of the management actions. Believe me it wasn't easy. A less conscious person would probably never know they were doing it.

Displaced anger is anger that has been routed away from healthy expression through a coping mechanism. In most cases, displacement is the process of moving anger away from the actual target onto a target the mind feels may be safer. This person who bears the brunt of displaced anger may have no idea what happened to cause the anger, thus damaging his or her relationship with the angry person. Anger of this type is also problematic because it does not allow for resolution of the anger itself, and the effects of anger can build up over time.

STORY-TIME ON YOUR PROFILE AL!! So, I wanna share a story with you, to get it OUT there. Number one, I've called Trimet TWICE now, on Friday, to complain about this guy but I want to post it here too, to make sure the story gets out there. So, Friday morning, two days ago, my partner Don and I are on the # 58 heading to town. Bus ID number 1817, as I recall, and the driver is this Asian dude who is, I believe, Korean American, he's tall, heavy set, about 6 feet or taller, over 200 pounds, in his late 50's with black, receding, dyed hair and glasses.

Nothing like this in the Trimet transit district

Sound Transit is seeking Eastside volunteers for its Citizen Oversight Panel. The 15-member group independently monitors Sound Transit to make sure it meets its commitments to build and operate a regional bus, light rail and commuter rail transit system.
The group meets twice monthly during normal business hours with the task of digging into agency details, asking hard questions and reporting its findings to the Sound Transit Board of Directors.

Never see the arrogant Trimet executives doing this sort of thing

NJ Transit held a “We Are Listening” forum at the Hoboken Terminal, where a dozen top agency executives sat at tables on the station concourse in front of the waiting room to listen to the concerns of commuters and hand out informational pamphlets.

TRIMET COMMUNICATIONS

This is wrong of course (why would the idiots in charge get anything right!) I've lost $188 a month off my puny pension of $948/mo. Mcfarlane is literally starving me out! The man has no ethics and no scruples.

Q: With the negotiations between TriMet and the ATU at a"standstill" - how much is this costing me, a union employee?

A: Good question, as this affects roughly 2,000 TriMet employees. With the expired contract, TriMet is no longer paying wage increases and has passed along the increase in health care costs until the contract is settled. The next wage increase was to take effect on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012.  Union members are now paying the health care cost increases, which averaged 9.25% for Regence and 6.25% for Kaiser. This means that union members are paying more per month for their health care than non-union employees who pay 6 percent of premium costs. TriMet has proposed in the new contract that union employees pay 6% of the premium cost.  So, in essence, until the contract is settled, a union employee is paying more now than what is being proposed under the new contract. To put that in real dollars, if delays continue beyond June 2013, it would mean the economic impact for a typical 15-year bus operator with Regence family coverage will be around $94.20 in lost monthly wages and pay $37.12 more a month in healthcare costs. That’s roughly $131 a month.  And, on a side note, TriMet also has proposed a contract term that is prospective, meaning no retroactive wage adjustments or reimbursement of premiums will be paid. Question? Just Ask! TRIMET EXECS ARE WHAT IS WRONG WITH AMERICA AND THE WORLD

I'm past speechless with the executives in charge of this agency at this point.
Mcfarlane runs amok and nobody cares.
He has been handing out lucrative contracts to all of his cronies from the past starting with Sapporta and ending with Bob Nelson.
He is not interviewing or searching for candidates, he is 'paying off' people that he knows.
And he is getting away doing it all  with impunity.
Bob Nelson already getting a nice fat $4k a month from Trimet but now Mcfarlane wants to hand him some more cold hard cash?
What's going on here? How is it that this man can get away with everything he has done?
Mcfarlane is a criminal, not a general manager.
Mcfarlane needs to be indicted for misuse of public funds

TRIMET TOP PENSIONS (supposedly)

Al, what you are missing in this post is "total compensation" (non-union side), which means pension and benefits, like medical. This list does not state this, so the total cost of said retirees are ALOT HIGHER!
This is a somewhat surprising list!
There are actually two bus operators on this list?
How is that possible?
$75 for each year after 10, so 30 years would be $2,250, so 40 years would be $3000, so how the hell does a bus operator get $4,000 a month?
Why does a lists of 11 names qualify for a fee of  $91.00?
What a freaking rip off!

C-TRAN BLAMES TRIMET

This is a fairly interesting incident (see below post) a Trimet driver first alleged an 'assault' which turned into an 'accident' claiming the C-Tran bus 'hit' him.
The Trimet driver was even see by medical.
But when C-Tran investigated they came back and told the Trimet supervisor that it was the Trimet drivers fault.
And that was that.
I doubt very much had the allegation gone the other way Trimet would have handled it like that.
Nice to see such a loyalty to their drivers from C-Tran.

Mcfarlane is obviously trying to bankrupt Trimet. It's as obvious as the nose on your face.
And he is getting away with it.

ATTENTION ATU MEMBERS

How much more of Mcfarlanes arrogance do we need to see?

 This man Mcfarlane is so insulting to the public and the employees that I don't know how he continues to get away with his crimes. Yes crimes, misuse of tax payers funds (conducting anti union propaganda) and lies (hiding records from Joe Rose, complaining of budget problems while swelling ranks of executives).
I'm serious, this man needs to be indicted for something.

But McFarlane apparently thinks there's still enough cash flowing to expand the agency's executive ranks. And those jobs don't come cheap.
TriMet has confirmed that the general manager is "in conversation" with Bob Nelson, the agency's former executive director of operations, to serve as an interim deputy GM.
"Bob will help assess the role of a permanent deputy GM and how that position might be structured to improve service delivery to the community," said spokeswoman Mary Fetsch. "TriMet has had this position in the past, and it is common in the transit industry."
At the same time, McFarlane is talking to high-powered consultant Barbara Ramirez Spencer for a limited-term position.
"She spent nearly 20 years at the nation's largest transit district (New York City's MTA)," Fetsch wrote in an email.
"She is an accomplished executive with significant experience in public, private and academic organizations. A strategic thinker and creative problem-solver with strong leadership, planning, operational and change management skills. She also has a strong commitment to organizational integrity, effectiveness and renewal."

TRIMET STUPID RULES

Trimet has a very regressive and punitive system for taking time off. Each garage only allows so many people to be off on any particular day.
At Merlo garage they allow 7 people to sign the vacation book each day.
The book opens 30 days ahead of the scheduled days off.
The book opens at midnight on the 30th day before a any day off.
What this means is that operators have to be at the office at midnight 30 days before days off.
Even if they have to be up at 4 in the morning the next day operators need to be at the office midnight the day the book opens.

Trimet cares about fatigue, well they have lots of work over there to to do in order revise policies that cause driver exhaustion.

One of these policies is forcing operators to sign a book to get a day off at midnight.

TRIMET'S DIRTY LITTLE SECRET

We have never seen Trimet issue a chart like this from the  MTA, this is their dirty little secret. Or one of many secrets that Trimet keeps hidden from the public. But I know one thing, debt service consumes more money from the TRIMET budget than employee health care does. But nobody knows that except TRIMET insiders and those of us that have studied the Trimet budget. TRIMET is more interested in paying banks then in the health of its employees

Comment on Portland Transport

ACCORDING TO TRIMET PIN HEADS THERE ARE NO VISUAL BARRIERS

Invisible pedestrians are a nightmare for bus drivers, who live in fear of running over people they can't see.
Three pedestrians were killed in 63 accidents with SEPTA buses in 2012, the most in recent history.
Now, bus drivers are urging SEPTA to reposition outside rearview mirrors, contending they create a blind spot that endangers pedestrians, especially during left turns.
The drivers have an ally in David Sale of Vancouver, Wash., whose daughter Danielle, 22, was killed by a left-turning bus in Portland, Ore., in 2010.
Story continues below.
"We don't have to put drivers in that position," Sale said last week. The driver who killed his daughter and another woman and injured three others was fired, and "she got a life sentence the day she hit my daughter," Sale said. "She'll have to live with that every day for the rest of her life."

MY COMMENT AT PORTLAND TRANSPORT REGARDING THE TRIMET 'CRISIS'

They want us to fall on our swords in an act of  Seppuku. Well you know what I say to that. Mcfarlane and all the overpaid technocrats need to fall on their swords first:
And outside experts said that TriMet's problems are much more complex than its union contract.(In other words, Mcfarlane and his bought and paid for cronies are lying)
Don Pickrell, chief economist at the U.S. Department of Transportation's Volpe Center in Cambridge, Mass., said TriMet is typical of many of the country's transit agencies.
He said that like others, it is stuck with seemingly intractable budget problems, even as ridership grows and it takes federal grant money for new rail lines it doesn't have the money to operate.

Trying to get the ignorant masses to understand this is a task unlikely to succeed in a country that is filled with a population that is against itself.
In Greece, Spain, Italy the people rose up together and to this day they fight the money masters.
In the good ole US of A the population tears itself down.
No police needed here.
Americans will get what they deserve. They think it will end with the destruction of the unions.
Boy are they in for a big surprise.

Listen to this nonsense

This idiot currently in charge of Trimet is talking about 2023!
That takes nerve to talk about 10 years away, real nerve.
Totally lacks credibility-from the 'slide show' today
---------------------------------

If our current contract offer is accepted or we prevail in arbitration and no other changes are made – we still face service cuts in FY2023.
(3, 3 year contract periods to adjust this more minor misalignment)
What you should forget is that this forecast DOES NOT include restoring or adding any new service – except for operating the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail service.
We would only make slight increases in bus service to solve reliability problems and peak overloads.
We must find financial stability if we are to grow our service.
We face a fundamental question – are we a health care organization or a transit provider.

SCREW TRIMET-GO WORK AT LONG BEACH TRANSIT

No part time nonsense sounds like a real transit agency not the bullshit we have in Portlandia photo by Erik Halstead

TriMet may be rolling toward disaster, but there's debate about what's driving the problems

 But far more than a lavish union contract would likely be at fault, they said. Rather, according to Pickrell and other experts who spoke to The Oregonian, TriMet has boxed itself into a situation where it has taken on grander projects to add more transit miles, even as it talks publicly about seemingly uncontrollable labor and operating costs. The agency also must explore new revenue sources, they said.

OregonLive.com

My comments:

“Once regarded as the gold standard of public transit in the United States, TriMet is at risk of becoming a "skeletal system" if labor costs aren't reduced, McFarlane warned.”
~~~> I’m not sure how this myth got started But I grew up in Boston and when I came to PDX I never saw TRIMET as being that big of a deal compared to the cities like Boston and New York
“”But far more than a lavish union contract would likely be at fault, they said. ~~~>and this is what we have been saying for years, they took every grant for expansion which was offered with no regard to the future.
“”Still, TriMet's union workers have some of the most generous health-care benefits in the U.S. transit industry.””
~~~>This is just not true anymore since the last arbitration loss and now we pay for the entire increase for this years coverage. A complete misrepresentation of the facts
“”Under the just-expired contract green-lighted by the arbitrator last summer, premiums for the average union worker cost TriMet $30,000 or more a year, while union employees pay 10 percent out-of-pocket costs up to $1,500 with no premiums through retirement.””
~~~>Again completely false.  ½ the employees have no dependents and ½ have Kaiser, its just not true at all. “”
“Although the arbitrator's decision was supposed to be binding, the ATU has appealed it, hoping to restore near-universal health care that had existed for nearly 20 years before the ruling. The union contends management broke labor laws while negotiating the last contract. te misrepresentation””
~~>which indeed they did do. Multiple rulings by the ELRB on this topic have been against Trimet
“””"In my view," he said, "this is really an S.O.S. to our community – save our service."””
WAGES AT TRIMET
Did you know that the wages for a Trimet driver topped out at about $17/hr 30 years ago.
Today it's a little over $26  an hour.
That's a 35% increase, all due to cost of living raises, Trimet union employees have not had an actual raise in 30 years.
At the same time 30 years ago the General Managers salary topped out at $103,000.
Fred's salary was close to $300k, Mcfarlane is pulling down $220k.
Using Mcfarlanes salary as the basis that is a rise that's an crease of 120%.
Executive wages have increased by an absurd rate, yet the union is the problem.
 Some interesting comments there
BRUCE HANSEN OF ATU RESPONDS TO MCFARLANES THREAT TO END SERVICE
Today, TriMet issued another press release threatening dire service cuts far into the future. Once again, the agency placed the blame for its projected financial woes on the healthcare and pension costs of its frontline workforce. According to the Amalgamated Transit Union, the TriMet workers’ representative, TriMet’s numbers just aren’t adding up.
“I am a trustee of the pension fund, so I see the numbers,” says Bruce Hansen, the union’s president. He noted that the TriMet pension trust (not to be confused with the more costly state system, PERS) currently has over $58 million on deposit. Last year, the fund grew by three-quarters of a million dollars and had a total payout to retirees of just over $6 million. At that rate,” Hansen stated, “there are enough funds in the trust to pay pensions for nearly ten years, even if no other contributions were made.”
“Of course,” Hansen continued, “TriMet could choose to create a pension crisis by refusing to contribute anything at all to the pension fund. To do so, however, would be an extraordinary action to take, considering they are paying pensions as high as $16,000 a month to the former general manager and $11,000 a month to the former general counsel.”
Hansen also questions TriMet’s ongoing claim that its workforce has “among the richest health plans in the industry. Right now, TriMet employees are paying a higher percentage for their health care than most public employees.” He says that the disputed arbitration award gave management the right to recoup past years’ expenditures for health care. “But,” says Hansen, “you have to wonder at TriMet’s budgeting process. They should have budgeted for health insurance in those prior years. In effect, any money from the arbitration award would be a windfall for the agency, not something to fix a prior budgeting mistake.”
The real “boogyman” that should concern the public, says Hansen, is the steady diversion of operations funds into capital projects. “TriMet keeps expanding the system, and then it complains when labor costs go up. Who do they think is keeping all that new equipment running?” he asks. Hansen suggests that TriMet’s latest service cut threat should spur a full public inquiry of just how taxpayer money is being managed at TriMet.
Weasel Mcfarlane using his millions of tax dollars to defeat unionism
He is making the rounds in the press, spilling his vile anti union message. All the while he expands the system spending billions of tax dollars, using the  Trimet credit card (bonds) without even a second thought, and the never ending hiring of useless highly paid executives.
Here he has an interview with Arron Mesh Hotseat: TriMet General Manager Neil McFarlane
SLIMY TRIMET MANAGERS TRY 'SHOCK AND AWE' ON THE PUBLIC
The anti union propaganda has sunk to new lows with that weasel Mcfarlane threatening to basically shut down the transit system if the union doesn't accept decimation of its current benefits package. The world wide war on the working man continues in the once progressive city/state of Portlandia.
Story by Michael Anderson Yikes! Scary TriMet slideshow warns of 70% service cut by 2025
If current trends continue, TriMet would have to eliminate 63 bus lines and 70 percent of transit service in the next 10 years.
That’s the shockingly dire warning TriMet executives have chosen for the launch of the agency’s budget season tomorrow, according to a slideshow fragment circulated to stakeholders this week.
Using language TriMet managers had mostly avoided over the previous four years of cuts, the slideshow refers to a slow-motion "service crisis" for the agency created by costs that are expected to grow far faster than revenues through 2030.
The slideshow even includes a map showing 22 transit lines that might remain in that hypothetical 2025 – basically the agency’s frequent service bus network plus MAX and WES commuter rail.
It’s not yet clear what assumptions lie behind those projections – for example, whether they contemplate any tax increases, or whether the agency would expect any administrative cuts to accompany a 70 percent service cut.
Three of the seven circulated slides focus on the cost of TriMet’s medical benefits for its future retirees, a huge and growing expense that the agency has spent the last decade failing to save money for.
The dramatic rhetoric is the latest step in a long, slow about-face by the agency, which as recently as 2010 was willing to borrow $60 million from its future operating budgets to cover its share of the new Orange Line. After years of warnings by activists from the political right, left and center, TriMet executives now speak frequently about their catastrophically imbalanced long-term budget.
General Manager Neil McFarlane is scheduled to present a one-hour "state of TriMet" report to his bosses, the agency’s state-appointed board, during today’s 9 a.m. TriMet board briefing at the ODOT offices in Old Town.
TriMet workers’ union has been amping up its own rhetoric, too, with a new website presenting its side of the argument and a comprehensive critique of TriMet management published Monday on one operator’s blog.
But unlike management, the union has yet to acknowledge the size of Portland’s coming transit crunch – or to propose any solutions big enough to solve it.
This phase of testing is designed to gather feedback from operators as well as information about how the app works in the real world. Outreach to operators of lines 17 and 70—including the Center extraboard and relevant vacation relief operators—is under way. The next round of testing will be much larger, involving all bus lines, and about 200 members of the general public. Expanded outreach to bus operators will take place before this phase of testing launches in the spring. More information on trimet.org/mobiletickets.
Latest "seen and heard on Trimet" (uncensored)
But not seen on TRIMET'S HOW WE ROLL BLOG!
 TRIMET SCANNER TWEETS
I have to wait 40 min for the bus! on my birthday!? Damn you Trimet... damn you
Parkersmuse is not amused
. yes, but this keeps happening an lot. I DO get to my stop early. I DO call to check when bus will arrive. Your service is FAIL
. and in case you didn't read my tweet. READ IT AGAIN. I DID CHECK TRANSIT TRACKER. Your answer is pandering BS
. why should I call or email? Do tell. It's a systemic issue not a "customer service" issue. Fix your damn GPS system.
GET READY FOR MORE OF MCFARLANES BULLSHIT TO BE HEAPED ON THE PUBLIC
How much do you want to bet he will use this occasion to make anti union comments and innuendos. It's interesting he would chose this venue  to make his little speech  where no  public comment is allowed
PORTLAND'S FAVORITE BUS DRIVER SUFFERS THE TRIMET TREATMENT
I used to refer to the "Trimet treatment' constantly when I was making my daily videos while working there.
The 'treatment' I refer to is the complete lack of competent management review of incidents. It happens to employees, it happens to riders.
The institution known as Trimet seems to be unable to react to legitimate concerns but is also unable to discern incidents that are not even true or misidentified.
It's one of the great things about not working there, no more suffering the Trimet treatment.
I suffered many instances of Trimet treatment, in the end it was enough to get me to leave.
But Dan Christensen to suffer this treatment is unbelievable, really!
Don't they even know who he is? Well, they most likely don't have the slightest idea who he is or what he has done since being a bus driver at Trimet. That after all is the Trimet way, talk out your ass and make your organization look like its run by morons, which it apparently is.
Something happened yesterday that made me laugh. Sometimes something very small happens that defines Trimet in it’s entirety. Like senseless rebuilding of fences and ascetic landscaping in a bus driver parking lot in the middle of a budget problem. That’s right we can’t pay you bus drivers this year but we need to pay to plant new flowers around your parking lot and field.. you know where no one ever cares to look. Sometimes it’s the small that truly reveals what’s wrong with Trimet on the large scale.
So I was off from the 29th of Jan until the 7th of Feb but when I came into work I had interoffice mail. I opened the envelope and there is a complaint.
A complaint? How do you get a complaint when you have been home sick?
I go see my manager and he swears it's me. I show him the incident date and it says the 30th of Jan.
"That can't be me I was out sick" I say.
"No it's you" He says adamantly.
I offer up my doctor notes. "No look I was off those days"
"You wanna see the video?" He asks smugly “I’ve seen it, it’s you”
