Light rail heads to Tigard-Max RedLine

Porkland City Council member Steve Novice wants to shake out $650,000 (for now) from the general fund to "study" stuffing light rail down highway 99W (Porkland's total "contribution" for the two year "study" is pegged at $1,050,000). Overall, between Metro's $4.5 million, ODOT's $1,090,000, Tri-Met's $2.530 million, and cash extorted from various other entities, the two-year "study" comes to north of $11 million.
Tri-Met may be broke, but that's because they pay health-care benefits to drivers and maintenance folks - not because they pee away millions of dollars on "studies" and "art" installations. Nope, that's not the problem.
"This is about the future of the city as a whole," Novick said. "It's not just a transportation project."
Well, Stevie doesn't seem to have got the memo: we don't want a stinkin' two-car toy train over here. Leave "the future of the city" out here to us, and leave us the hell alone.
On the one hand, he says the city doesn't have money for sidewalks, and he wants to add an $8 to $12 monthly tax onto homeowners to pay for paving streets and building sidewalks. But on the other hand, he magically finds money to pay for plans to ram light rail where it's not wanted. Didn't he pick up a clue from Clark County, Washington?
But then, we all kind of knew that the recent vote demanding an actual public voice on SW light rail was going to be ignored. Looks like the cynicism was justified.

I don't read what Max Redline has to say, ever since he dared to accuse me of stealing *his* name.

Sorry Redline - I've had this name for 35 years. I don't think you can say the same for your blog, or Max headroom, or TriMet's MAX.

Max headroom seems like more than 35 years

That, and of course that there are better things to do than arguing with goobers on the internet. Same reason why I don't comment on Oregonian articles either.

This is what's TM's next step should be, IN ADDITION to fixing the infrastructure first:

Don't even mess with the CRC right now...it'll hold. We have 8-10 buses in the AM and 8-10 buses in the PM all lined up in a row going up or coming down Marquam Hill. No such thing as an express. You can add 50 buses to that area and it won't solve a damn thing. I thought the Tram was supposed to fix it...yeah right.

You build a MAX that continues from the current Jackson/PSU turnaround and terminate at Barbur Transit Center. You can throw it together with the Yellow so express 12 or 94 riders can jump off at Barbur if desired and ride a train the rest of the way downtown.

Make it like the Robinson Tunnel; going underground with only two stops-OHSU & the VA. Continue to the Barbur TC as it's terminus. Barbur is a sizeable TC; tear it up and build a parking garage.

From Barbur TC (or, if it's feasible, start BRT at 6th and Broadway) to King City you redo 99W to allow BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) lanes on both sides. You give DEDICATED LANES to next generation artics with preemption control of the stoplights. No other traffic other than busses from 5am to 9am and 3pm to 7pm. You don't need dedicated lanes past King City because traffic decreases dramatically but hey, while you're there, put them in.

Tigard and points south get their buses, OHSU/VA get their much needed relief, and you can still run the 12 and express buses all the way into town if you want.
