ALWAYS LOOKING OUT FOR US

Be Safe! Safety is the most important part of customer service. Use caution when walking in the yard. Use handrails and watch for slippery steps. Be safe, go slow and watch for others!

Schedule Make trips, not the schedule. Take a fifteen (15) minute break at the end of each trip. Avoid passing up customers, even at non-posted stops. Supervisors may change your route or direction to maintain service levels. When waiting for your bus, be patient and alert; your bus could be going the opposite direction. If relief operator does not show up, send OutMsg 5=No Relief Operator or call Bus Rescue.
Be Prepared Contact the “Service Emergency Information Line” at 503-962-6222 to determine if Service Emergency has been declared. (Pre-recorded message) Install chains on your vehicle the night before. (They are easier to remove if not needed) Plan to arrive early. Give yourself twice the normal time to get to work. Wear layers of cold weather gear and gloves. Bring plenty of food & water and reading materials to keep you busy. Check your pouch to be sure you have snow route information. Wear Ice Trekkers® to prevent slips and falls.
Driving on Snow & Ice Scan far ahead to spot problems early. Increase following and stopping distances. Use one control at a time to maintain traction. —Brake, turn or accelerate. Brake early and brake before turning. Accelerate out of turns. Stop near the crown of the road. Stop before waiting customers-bus slide danger. Use horn if sliding.
2010 Snow & Ice Instructions – Handout 11/19/2010 Questions? Call Training: or email MorganA@TriMet.org Release the brake if the bus should slide and turn in the direction of the slide. Make stops on level ground. Use caution on bridges and overpasses-watch for freezing danger. Be ready to compensate for the actions of others. Keep your engine running when below freezing.
Chains Max speed with chains or Insta-Chains® is 25mph. (Engage or disengage Insta-Chains between 5-25 mph) Recheck chains after each trip. Stay away from curbs. If you get S-T-U-C-K, Don’t spin your wheels/use idle speed or light throttle applications. Regular chains: Tie down broken chains with zip locks or twist ties. Do not drive if they cannot be secured and are hitting the side of the bus. Send Out msg 16 Chains-tied up and wait for assistance; crews can cut them off. Always follow directions of chain crews. Secure your bus and exit the seat while crews are working. Drive on and off the blocks slowly and do not spin the wheels. Do not abandon your vehicle with or without customers aboard.
