Jeez, I'm glad I'm not driving a bus any longer. It's another one of those "there but for the grace of God go I" situations. I was a hard ass in enforcing fares in the first half of my career but got a bit better at looking the other way as time went on. I'm not physically a real big guy nor do I appear intimidating so I'm surprised one of these young punks who I hassled for the fare didn't lash out on me physically. I've been spit on, and in one instance got covered with half-eaten chicken, hamburgers, opened mustard and ketchup containers, i.e. three bags of fast food garbage that splattered all over me and the driver's compartment but I was never hit, pummeled, stabbed, or shot while in the drivers' seat. I most definitely could have been. In thirty years of being a transit operator, I consider myself lucky.
I miss physically driving the bus and transporting decent human beings but I certainly do not miss dealing with the day to day conflicts that can happen at any time.

Agreed, the 'profession' of transit bus operator has turned sour, basically because of the national war against transit employees
