NEILS BULLSHIT

  1. Today’s release of the Secretary of State’s audit is the culmination of what the Secretary’s office called a six month body scan – where we provided hundreds of documents, and dozens of employees from around the agency took the time to talk with the auditors. They combed over it all and in the end – provided us with 23 good recommendations. And we’ll implement every one of them as we only want to be a better agency.

A quick note of thanks to all of you who produced documents, explained policies and procedures, and lent your suggestions and opinions. Your views and ideas have been captured by the auditors in these recommendations which will only go into improving our agency.

A lot of eyes will be on the report today and its findings – which I’d encourage all of you to read – because many thought the report would hold a scathing account of mismanagement. On the contrary, the report noted many of the good things we’re doing and how we’re building a better TriMet. And there is more to be done which is why I’m asking every one of you – from operators to analysts, clerks to mechanics, dispatchers to managers – look at how we can make this a better organization. We know what the problems are and we need your help in our solution to fix them.

While we have faced some challenges over the past year that sometimes made us feel like a dark cloud was hanging over us, we’ve been doing a lot of good. We’ve introduced 125 new buses, we’ve put $2.1 million worth of new bus service on the street in September and will be putting $3.1 million more in bus service on March 1, our new mobile app is doing phenomenal, the new Orange Line is on time and under budget (oh – and it’s just 591 days from opening), we’ve hired hundreds of great new employees, and the ATU and TriMet Leadership have held negotiations on hours of service and a new labor contract. We are certainly not resting there either.

As we work to find ways to improve our safety efforts, as we begin to add back bus and rail service, as we begin making improvements in the reliability of our service, as we work harder to communicate with our employees, listen to them and involve them – it’s going to take all of us, coming together, to truly build a better TriMet.

I ask for your help in accomplishing that.
