The secretary of states office is pleased because Trimet managers assure them that everything they wanted has become a reality.
Key among them is the new contract which resulted in union capitulation and made Mcfarlane a hero which lead to his absurd bonus and raise
Based on that I think the assumption is that Trimet union employees are happy now. What is not considered is that the union (atu757) used fear as a way to make sure employees voted yes to that contract. Every employee that was hired after the Gabba decision was threatened with loss of everything if they didn't vote yes. That was not a voluntary yes vote, that was a yes vote based on fear of loss. To assume that union employees are happy campers now is suspect
I for one was not coerced by fear, nor was anyone I know. We are adults, working men and women, who should be able to distinguish fact from opinion and make an intelligent decision. That is what I did.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that I would have liked to have seen some oversight from our union during this so called audit and own communication with members about its progress, if at all possible.
DeleteSo why did you vote yes John to giving back all the gains the union made for workers over the last 20 years? Seriously
ReplyDeleteAl, what would voting this contract down have done? It would have sent the thing to arbitration which we surely would have lost. Not only that, Trimet has won the public opinion battle on this which really irritates me. Is it just union culture to not be persuasive in your points or is it just our leadership?
DeleteSo what if it went to arbitration? That would've been preferable to complete and total surrender
DeleteAs Bruce presented to me the fear was that if employees hired after the GABA decision didn't ratify the contract then they themselves would end up with no defined-benefit and much worse healthcare.
ReplyDeleteNow I can understand why the unvested employees would vote yes but for the life of me I have no comprehension as to why the already vested employees voted to cut their own benefits -it makes no sense at all
And as you know John the people that got hurt the most had no say in this contract deal-
ReplyDeleteRetirees
That is something that needs to change.
