Taking a stand against the public when you're a public employee is pretty risky. Doing it publicly is just plain stupid. These people have just thrown away any good will the public had towards the union employees. If you're going to do this sort of thing it might be better to do it quietly. Nobody ever accused Trimet employees of being particular smart, especially the Nazi Contingent, which is pretty well universally disliked by the public
