Last night, the last thing a customer said to me at work, as he stepped off my train and out into the night, was “I’m gonna go kill myself.” He’s a regular rider, without a home, who needs serious support and help. I came home and wept. I’m awake now with a heavy heart.
I know, I know…I can hear it now. “You need to let it go.” “You need to do X or Y or Z” “You care too much.” I am doing all that I can, including caring too much. My faith in all systems around social supports is beyond busted. Especially in the hands of politicians.
This is the shit, day in and day out, that grinds me down to the bone. Helpless and hopeless is all I’m left feeling. I know my job in public transit isn’t pretty, or glamorous, but in *any* 2023 American city with a transit system, this is the norm. This is what we are dealt.
