happens if someone purchases a fare on their phone and the device goes dead
just before they're approached by a fare enforcer?

answer then: No worries. The system is cloud-based. Inspectors will have the capability
to punch in your phone number on their TriMet-issued iPhones and check to see if
you have an activated fare.
Easy peasy.

TriMet to fare app users: Dead battery? Good luck with that | OregonLive.com
Now your Phone has a 2 hour time limit like the ticket.
