TRIMET SCHEDULING CHECK

It's now past 9 pm on Sunday night. You'd think things would be running mostly on time now! Let's take a look:

YOU KNOW YOU WORK FOR A PIECE OF SHIT COMPANY WHEN

You are driving a bus in 95 degree weather  that has no a/c when there are buses that have do have a/c sitting parked in the  various  Trimet yards. This is a benefit that is only for west side bus drivers as the west side riders don't deserve any more consideration than the poor hapless Trimet driver attempting to make a living serving the public working for a company that thinks you are a piece of equipment.

LETTER TO THE OREGONIAN EDITOR RE: UNIONS

Cascade Policy Institute's latest anti-union diatribe continues the strange anti-union argument we've seen ("Nearly a third of Oregon union workers want out," June 24).
Steve Buckstein trumpets the "fact" that nearly a third of Oregon union members would opt out of their unions. Nearly a third, according to a series of Google Consumer Surveys, means that 68.8 percent of union members are perfectly happy with their union membership and everything they get because of their union membership. Cascade Policy Institute's argument against unions, despite a 68.8 percent approval rating, sure makes for a strange democracy.
Anti-union groups always fail to mention that union members can elect to decertify their union with a majority vote. You know, democracy via majority rule.

MORE EXAMPLES OF INCIDENTS THAT DO NOT MAKE TRIMET CRIME REPORTS

This  sort of thing will be a regular feature of this blog from now on

CRC DEAD FOR AT LEAST ONE YEAR

Personally I am of the mind that eventually this will get built, however its an insult to the tax payers who are
not making six figure incomes that $170 million has been spent on this boondoggle so far and its all been for nothing. We've had enough of these boondoggle projects that employ some people (temporarily) but make other people obscenely rich. Trimet has several six figure executives that should get the boot now. (they will end up on the payroll of some contractor on the MLR project most likely). It's more than a little interesting that it was light rail  (and Trimet) that sunk this project and Portland's intractability to that requirement. It always seemed to me that if they just let the bridge get built as big as possible then light rail could be added some time in the future. But no, it had to be now or else. I guess it will be or else then.

The average governor makes $133,348. That's 42 percent more than Kitzhaber's salary of$93,600. Only Gov. Paul LePage of Maine, whose salary is $70,000 and Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe, $86,890, and Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, $90,000, make less than Kitzhaber.

TRANSIT BOARDS GIVE AWAY THE STORE

Just like our useless Trimet board of directors who  handed Fred Hansen a pension for life of $16k a month.

The Daily Herald reported board members agreed to keep paying his $252,000 salary through next February, and then for another six months, any difference between his old salary and a future job's income. And then there's the other gold-plated perks that drive us crazy in the private sector. Clifford gets $35,243 for unused vacation days, $21,971 for unused sick days, reimbursement for his pension contributions, a $78,000 payment for selling his home and another $75,000 for lawyer fees.
In all, the Chicago Tribune reported Clifford could get $740,000 to walk away from his job.

TRIMET NANNY STATE

SMOKE-FREE TRIMET BEGINS MONDAY: 3 days to go
Monday marks the first day of smoke-free TriMet. All TriMet campuses will soon have all ashtrays and smoking shelters removed. Effective July 1, no one will be allowed to smoke on TriMet property. The policy does not change anything in public spaces such as bus stops and transit centers. Smoking is already prohibited in all bus shelters and most rail platforms. For more information, visit the smoke-free TriMet page on TriNET.

THIS SHOULD BE INTERESTING MONDAY MONDAY MONDAY

After extensive testing, refinement and training, the bus ticket printer system is going live, systemwide! The new tickets are easier to read and more durable compared to the thin, newsprint transfers. The printers are located near the farebox and are about the size of a shoebox. The improved bus tickets match those of MAX and WES, taking the confusion out of transferring. They have a foil security strip and the 2-hour tickets are good for exactly two hours. TriMet’s aim is to provide a smooth transition to this new technology. To ensure that riders have access to valid fare at all times, bus operators may still use tissue transfers in the early stages of this transition or in the event of technical difficulty. TriMet has notified riders of this change via emails, mini-brochures and via news and social media. Operators and supervisors have participated in small-group, in-person training, accompanied by detailed written instructions. If operators have questions or need additional training they should contact their manager or the Training Department.
(This will gum up the works for sure)

TRIMET WINS THE FEDERAL CASE SALE VS TRIMET

U.S. District Court Judge Michael Mosman has granted TriMet and Sandi Day’s motion for summary judgment in the federal lawsuit filed on behalf of the plaintiffs related to the April 2010 fatal bus collision. The motion was granted on the basis that the fatal collision did not represent a violation of the plaintiffs’ constitutional rights. The judgment dismisses the federal case against TriMet and Day in its entirety. However, a state case in this matter is still pending, set for trial in August.
April 24, 2010 fatal incident in Old Town
TriMet has always accepted responsibility for the negligent driving of the bus operator when she struck five people in a crosswalk, killing two women, Danielle Sale and Jenee Hammel. Portland Police issued TriMet bus operator Day six misdemeanor traffic citations for not yielding the right-of-way and for making an illegal left turn from NW Glisan onto Broadway. No criminal charges were brought against Day. Two TriMet internal panels and an independent external review panel all deemed the collision preventable and Day was terminated in August 2010. The Amalgamated Transit Union is challenging Day’s termination and the matter is awaiting arbitration. She was hired as an operator in October 2007.

WAR AGAINST TRANSIT WORKERS

The unions representing train operators, station agents, mechanics, maintenance workers and professional staff want BART to give them a raise and to protect their health care and pension benefits.
While ridership on BART has reached 400,000, generating an operating surplus, the agency has said it needs to trim costs to pay for $16 billion in major system upgrades over the next 10-15 years.

BART Unions Give Notice of Strike - Mass Transit

PleasantonWeekly.com : BART transit union asks Brown to declare 60-day 'cooling off' period to postpone Monday's strike

RATHER INTERESTING PUBLIC RECORDS REQUEST

The way they hand out millions and millions of dollars for that HUGE PORK PROJECT CALLED MLR is astounding. At one board meeting I actually got up and objected to the way these millions are just given away even after a previous bid was accepted. All the winning contractors can come back whenever they feel like it to the hog trough for another round of pig feed. Never any questions are asked The head hogs, Trimet six figure staff, always provide the same answer to that helpless board of puppets: "we didn't foresee this contingency and we are still within  budget on this line item".

I am hoping that when this audit is conducted a very thorough look at how that money was spent.

It's no wonder why the public has so much animosity towards government employees. They see all these pigs at the trough, (including many Trimet directors who are getting fat retirement checks from the tax payers) and the majority of the public gets none of this type of pork. They just work their whole lives to provide the pork to the lucky people that are part of the government.

Here is the request for public records, you know that all of the MLR contractors are having a field day with all this pork

Certified payroll report, I'm requesting this information as my previous emplyer has not sent it to me after several request over the phone and hand written request. TRIMET SKIRTING PORTLAND CODES?

Trimet had a special mobile home built for employees to be out of at Center Street while they remodel the first floor. It is a 4 section unit. There is a 5th that is a bathroom unit. All of this takes up the whole front lot. Employees will be in this unit for over a year. Today was supposed to be moving day. Apparently there was  Notice from   the City of Portland that will delay the occupancy of these mobile homes.   What this tells me is that Trimet more than likely tried to sneak this building through without the proper permits. Either that or the usual lack of competence in handling their affairs.

Trimet press release:
JUST ASK: I heard that the first floor Center St TriMet employees were moving to the portable trailer this weekend. Is this still happening?
A: The move was slated for this weekend June 28-29, but due to unanticipated delays in the permitting process this move will be delayed by approximately two weeks. TriMet cannot safely or legally occupy the structure until the permits are final.  When the move happens, 500+ TriMet employees including Lost & Found, Station Agents, Operators, Field Operations, Training and Station Management will be working at the new modular facility at the corner of SE 17th and Center. These employees will return to the remodeled first floor in about a year. To see the floorplan of the modular structure, look for the big printout in the report area or visit TriNET's PMLR page and and search “modular” for a PDF of the floorplan.

BRT VS LRT

According to WIKIPEDIA :

Comparison with light rail / metro systems

Light Rail has reported passenger capacities between 3,500pph (mainly street running) to 19,000pph (fully Grade-separated). "From these findings ... there is little evidence to support the view that LRT can carry more than busways."[15] By way of example, a light rail system running on two-minute headways with 200-passenger cars operating as single units could carry 6,000 passengers per hour (pph). Theoretically, this same system should carry 12,000 pph with two-car trains, and 24,000 pph with four-car trains just as BRT Systems can/have increased capacity with larger capacity buses and stations.
The Los Angeles Orange Line runs entirely in an exclusive lane and therefore achieves speed and reliability comparable to rail.

Cost

The capital costs of implementing BRT lines can be lower than up-front costs of constructing LRT lines. A study by the United States Government Accountability Office found that the average capital cost per mile for busways was $13.5 million while light rail average costs were $34.8 million.[16] However, a huge range of capital costs can be seen, as BRT lines can cost anywhere from $200,000—$55 million per mile, while LRT lines can range from $12.4—$118.8 million per mile.[citation needed] The total investment varies considerably due to factors such as cost of the roadway, station structures, park-and-ride facilities, traffic signal systems and vehicles.

The costs of a running a BRT system is about $13.49 a mile and the total cost for a year of expenditure is $987.80 according to a study done by the GAO. Running a BRT system is much less expensive than running a light rail system. The BRT is also much less expensive than a trolley system.[17]
Light rail and tram systems require the placement of rails for the entire line. The tram usually avoids the high additional costs for engineering structures, such as tunnels, that need to be built for metro rail systems. Properly maintained rail tends to provide a smoother ride, making it more attractive to riders than road-based systems.
Proponents of light rail point out that the operating costs of BRT are not necessarily lower than light rail. The typically larger light rail vehicles enjoy reduced labor costs per passenger, and the unit capital cost per passenger can be lower than a BRT system.[18]

TRIMET SCHEDULING NIGHTMARE

What we see here is the status of all the 57 buses at 3:45 pm. As you can see its a freaking mess

THE CRAP TRIMET DRIVERS HAVE TO PUT UP WITH

Many drivers are forced to do road reliefs. The problem with road reliefs is that if you're relieving a dead beat driver who is only interested in bumping up his paycheck you are stuck starting your shift late and dealing with the mess the driver you relieved leaves for you. It's a horrible system and illustrates the bad in unionism and complicit management  that protects this sort of incompetence.

WHAT TO DO NEXT TIME YOU MISS THE BUS BUT CATCH UP TO IT AT THE RED LIGHT

The frustrated female passenger arrived late at a stop just as the double-decker was pulling away.

But rather than wait for the next one she ran and caught up with the bus at traffic lights - and lay down in the street.

She lay spread eagle “like a star fish” and the stunned driver was unable to move forward.

Following a stand-off lasting several minutes the baffled driver eventually relented and let the protesting passenger board the bus.

BRUCE HANSEN SAYS TRIMET MANAGEMENT OBSESSED WITH THEIR OWN SAFETY LEAVE WORKERS HANGING

Management Indifference to Worker Safety

“Fort Knox” is how employees refer to TriMet’s new downtown offices at Harrison Square. The name was inspired by the high security and locked doors that control access in and out, as well as by the $1 million management spent to buy furniture for the pricey new office space.

Management’s work environment is a stark contrast to that offered to many frontline workers and TriMet passengers.

WAR AGAINST TRANSIT WORKERS

Transit workers are powerful if they stick together and act as one

BART spokesperson Rick Rice issued the following statement on the unions’ strike authorization vote:
“This procedural step is a clear signal our employees are willing to shut down the Bay Area and cause commute chaos to make their case for a 23 percent raise. Despite losing a day at the table to allow for their vote, BART is at the table today and negotiating in good faith for a sustainable contract. Taxpayers and riders cannot continue to be the only source of funds to pay for the rising costs of benefits. BART is asking its employees to begin paying towards their pensions and contributing more than the $92 a month they currently pay for health care. We are interested in reaching a reasonable solution with our union partners. We believe a deal can be reached in time to avert a strike which will have far reaching economic impacts to the region. But if they must go the way of a strike, we ask that they stand by their word and give the public 72 hours of notice to prepare.”

LET'S VERIFY THE CLAIM THAT MY HEALTH COVERAGE HAS MORE THAN DOUBLED IN 10 YEARS

How did this happen

The contract was the same for all of these years yet the benefits as % of wages has more than doubled. Continued hiring and expansion has accounted for the the increase in expense categories but that doesn't explain the benefits as % of wages.  Is this all as a result of health care costs?  The health care costs are the only variable in the equation. The next question that would follow is why has Trimet not looked for alternatives to the blue cross plan if that is the major cost factor.

Now brought to you by the friendly people at the Trimet public records department!

It’s that time of the year when schools across our region are letting out for summer. (Let’s hope we start to see the summer part!) (hahaha funny Neil) With all those kids out – it’s a
reminder not just for our professional staff of bus and rail operators – but for all of us to take a couple extra seconds when we’re driving to watch for any kids or
for that matter, more cyclists on the streets. Having had two little squirts (haha, Neil is getting funnier by the day ) at one time myself, I know that parents can easily be distracted and a little one might
wander off and into traffic.(a big one too)  That’s where that extra attention you can give comes in handy. I know I’m not alone when I have to remind myself to leave the phone
on the seat or turn the radio down a bit. (what stations do you listen to Neil?) I just know that we all want our little ones to come home safely. (don't forget the big ones Neil) So please, take care when you’re out there driving. And
of course, enjoy every moment our beautiful summers bring!
