Recently TriMet announced that after two years of planning for an expensive new “bus rapid transit” line from Gresham to Portland, the new service would actually take 8-11 minutes longer than current buses.
Over in Southwest Portland, TriMet is planning a $2 billion light rail line to Bridgeport Village near Tualatin, a suburban shopping mall.
Agency planners are fascinated with shiny new objects, but most riders don’t benefit. For example, between 2000 and 2015, TriMet opened five new rail lines, but the total vehicle-miles of daily transit service actually dropped by 5%.
It’s time to admit that TriMet’s basic business model is becoming obsolete. The agency is a sluggish monopoly that takes years to bring new service to market, while customers live in a smartphone world where they have millions of choices and same-day delivery.
In particular, the coming era of driverless vehicles will create entirely new businesses that will free riders from the tyranny of fixed-route transit service. Legacy systems such as TriMet will be stuck with a vast network of aging infrastructure that will be too expensive to maintain.
We don’t need another light rail line to Bridgeport, or a bus rapid transit line to Gresham. What we need is new vision of mobility in Portland.

Trimet bus hijacked

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man possibly suffering from a mental health crisis ordered people off a TriMet bus on Wednesday morning with a BB gun.

Passengers and the driver on line 19 didn’t know it was a BB gun, however, until afterwards, because it resembled a firearm. The suspect was arrested on NW 2nd Avenue and W Burnside Boulevard.

The driver did an excellent job of keeping the suspect calm, police said.

Trimet "employee" survey

Those of us that understand Trimet culture understand that there are two distinct classes of employees at the agency.

The non union employees, the ones that Mcfarlane constantly keeps telling the board that if he doesn't increase all their wages he will lose "talented" employees. (like these public transportation jobs grow on trees)

These employees are "below market" in terms of wages and benefits.

And then there are the union employees.

The ones he always talks about as getting "too much" and "above market" wages and benefits.

These are the employees who are not considered important at Trimet and are replaced as easily as getting a new tire.

And then they wonder why moral among union employees is so pathetic that only 20% of them bothered to respond to this survey.

The survey also documented extreme dissatisfaction by the unionized workforce yet not a word is spoken

Law professor states for the record Trimet is lying

In the article, Professor Cunningham-Parmeter says a technical read of the state law might support TriMet's position that it is prohibited from paying employees to attend union orientation. But case law around the National Labor Relations Act, upon which state laws for public employee unions (are) based, (has) found that paying employees for their time to attend union functions is generally allowed.
"This is not a novel issue at all," Cunningham-Parmeter said. "It's settled law that assisting a union in these ways is perfectly permissible."

Metro staff say light rail would be the best choice for a future rapid-transit connection between downtown Portland and Bridgeport Village, which lies on the edge of Tigard and Tualatin.
The new line would likely operate as an extension of the existing Green Line. It's expected to cost about $2 billion as currently imagined.

Randy Stedmen is lying through his teeth (as usual)

On October 22, 2014 a presentation was made to the Trimet board of directors at which the board was informed that if the new contract was approved (which is was) then Trimet would be financially sustainable until the year 2030!

And here we have Trimet insinuating that they are not sustainable in the long term? Well he should have mentioned that the "long Term" is the year 2030!

Is this a ploy to destabilize the union or is Trimet coming back for more as they have said they would do multiple times!

Did Bruce surrender for nothing?

Bruce gave Trimet the Hours of Service, the block signup, and contract concessions. Can he hold the line? I have my doubts
