I just found out that these idiotic ticket printers activate when the door is opened.
What does that mean to operators?
It means that if someone is fumbling for change and the door is closed that the operator has to activate the screen that prints the ticket.
So if the operator is driving down the road and a rider has just found their change and comes up to pay the operator must divert their attention from the road to activate the ticket printer.
Furthermore the rider must stand in front of the yellow line and wait for the entire process to be completed.
Do these managers have clue at all?
Sure doesn't appear that they have any common sense whatsoever.
They just keep piling on the tasks to their bus operators. What a joke.
Brought to you by the same folks who brought us the buses with windows that don't open and max seating designed for six year olds

Not true Al after you close door you have about 1 minute then the screen goes away
Thanks for clearing that up Neil!
There is the issue of riders coming across the yellow line and waiting while the ticket printer is activated.
This is intentional distracted driving imposed by Trimet managers and really was not necessary.
The bus driver turns into a cashier during this whole process
this issue was actually mentioned at the board briefing presentation
