Band together! September 15-21

Now that BAND TOGETHER has begun, it's time to add selfies-in-solidarity with the hashtag #BANDTOGETHER

It's time that we stand up and be counted, instead of being marginalized and discarded.

Last year we had a little over a hundred selfies in solidarity, we should definitely surpass it this year. The more that we're aware of the situation the sooner we can get real substitutive change.

Add selfies here...

My name is Henry Beasley,

From the Drivers Side!

Our GM was just given a fat raise. Not sure why, since he's done nothing of note since he was hired against our union's strenuous objections. He was fired from his job in Canada, eh? We should have taken their lead and said, "No, thanks." He's out of touch because he's just another corporate wonk who would not last a week doing our job. In fact, I'd invite him to switch with me for a month

We’ve known this for years

The REDDIT bus driver

Neal Berlin commentary

Just got done watching the TriMet Board Meetings, the one part the board directors are falling all over themselves to heap praise upon CEO Doug The Desk and justify his 5% pay raise, $15,000, retroactive back to July.  Makes proud to see that all their Bobble Heads are working.  Our great hope for some change in the discussion of really looking at TriMet operations, Union relationships and making sure the taxpayers are getting their money worth, Etc.  Director Ms Wai, has been dashed by statement on the justification of the 5% raise.  I know we are just pissing into the wind when try to educate the public at large of what is going on at TriMet but I do find some comfort that we are not completely alone, even if you and me!  Make sure you have raincoat on when take a TriMet piss, I always have it on.

They railroaded him because of a light on his camera, wiping blood on a wall, and some other BS. He was convicted of two counts basically because he scared the layman jury in my opinion. Make no mistake, this is a Ted Wheeler railroading.

Max calls

The Redditor bus driver

there’s a trimet bus driver that does these super long posts about the job on reddit.
He goes by the name ‘bridgeCityBus’. The posts are rather interesting but I do find it odd how he never says anything negative about the job, which is suspicious. Furthermore the comments on his posts are pretty odd also, all this ‘thank you for being a bus driver’ I just haven’t seen this anywhere and I’ve been following this material as a hobby for 15+ years now. His responses to some of the comments are definitely not as rosy about things as his narratives are

Check it out, it’s a good read

Here’s a list of his posts, pretty popular on reddit

Trimet light rail max action control calls

Trimet dispatch bus action

The wisdom of Neal Berlin

From right to left( just like if you were reading Hebrew). STEP ONE. The two ladies:I am not sure I want to take the step into management. What do you have to loose? Your soul?
STEP TWO. Now that I am in management, I must figure a way the higher ups will notice me, then promote me. I got it! Institute a daily sock inspection ( note this actually done by TriMet)!
STEP THREE. What now? I ask myself more than once a day. I come to work everyday and make sure no one finds out I really do nothing. That does take a lot of work! I do eat lunch, that counts for something.
STEP FOUR. Now that I am this high up on the management ladder, the options for me are few. Admit this quest was a mistake, and make amends with the underlings I have offended? Retreat to a easier option, carry on and and ask for forgiveness in the next life. Still mulling the options. The young man heading upward, is sophomoric enough to proceed. Just waiting for grey hair to give him the appearance of a sage. So it goes... Two Bells.

Transit workers demand protection

Why March?

By Henry Beasley

We are organizing transit workers and the riding public to March on City Hall August 8, in support for the passage of Oregon House Bill 2677.  This proposed law redefines the punishment and modifies manner of committing crime of assault in the third degree against certain public transportation employees

Trimet fail

Thursday, June 6, 2019

Neal Berlin commentaries

Your taxpayers dollars are paying for this PR campaign so that you vote for the proposed 2020 bond measure that will if passed will send your property tax bill to new high!  This entire report is “FAKE NEWS” on so many levels that one must think all creating this report must be smoking some good pot or they have vested interest in getting into your wallet; maybe both!  TriMet is under Metro, who care less about facts that contradict TriMet statistics.  The agenda of pushing this folly is (approximately$300BILLION) is just getting started.  Just note that most all the officials who are for this do NOT ride or use public transportation.  Their guiding principle can summed up in the following sentence “Mass transit is for the other guy so I can drive my car faster.”  Eric Severeid said this over 40 years ago and it is still true today.   So it goes... Two Bells.

Japanese bus drivers on Strike

Neal Berlin

I just wonder how much money TriMet has already has spent on the SW Corridor Project ( $300 Billion estimated final cost)? The big difference between the this article and Trimet has NOT received a public vote to proceed with construction. This has not stopped or even slowed TriMet to keep moving ahead with project even though public testimony has shown using TriMets own statistics that estimates of potential ridership is not even close to reality. Those people and facts have been dismissed with distain as nothing more as a bunch of college school kids doing an some kind of science project. One thing this taxpayer also wonders about and would like a answer is how much money is being spent by TriMet Public Relations Department to support the 2020 Bond measure to pay for this fiasco. Both of these questions may be asked but will in all probably will never be answered. The bill will be sent via an enormous increase in property taxes, not itemize, if it passes. So it goes... Two Bells.

Excellent essay on bus drivers

I can’t remember a time when public transportation wasn’t part of my life.

I have boarded public buses from here to Seattle, and dozens of towns and cities in between

For more decades than I care to count, public transportation has gotten me where I needed to go, and it is cheap. In my book, that is a winning combination.
But I have seen many changes and, in more ways than one, public transportation has become an unpleasant, grin-and-bear-it experience for the riding public.

Neal Berlin on the murder of HART transit operator

This press conference sounds like they took ALL the talking points from the last 18 plus years from the TriMet PR Department (Portland,Oregon transit agency) and spewed it out with the same monotone sincerity that top Management have mastered that rank and file recognize as BS!  We in Portland had two passengers killed in the past 18 months and assaults on operators, supervisors and other company personnel is at all time high, and still going higher.  The response from Management and its Board is we will be gathering more static’s and will get back to everyone soon with a plan.  I wonder if a another tragic death occurs will while they are on one of their days off will they wait until Monday to respond?  I bet Vegas would not take that bet.   So it goes... Two Bells.

Gee, let’s see if  Channel 12 , Portland Oregon, will do something similar or just run and produce with Trimet, the local transit agency, more puff feel good PR 2 minutes presentations.  See if Trimet will hand over without going through Freedom of Information Act video of what really is taking place on its bus, trains and platforms.  Trimet Public Relations plan is getting into high gear to get taxpayers wallets to vote for the 2020 SW Corridor project.  Do not bother to show up and testify about your concerns to Trimet and its Board of Directors, they have already made up their minds, let’s get the people’s money and make it our money!  When the time comes to vote, Vote No!Meanwhile, TriMet just is crossing their fingers that there be NO incidents (like passengers or operators getting killed, getting assaulted is okay because that is always is the operators fault)that will upset the beautiful picture of safety and reliability that in reality is an allusion.  So it goes... Two Bells.

Joys of being a TriMet bus driver

I’m a driver. This happened yesterday.

Those of you who know me know, I’m most often considered an “Alpha Female”. I am kind but take no shit. I heap praises upon strangers for acts of kindness whether they be random or necessitated. I have a very strong personal space bubble an never let bad vibes pop it. I am fallible as the next human being but am always strong even when I’m wrong.
That being said, I am deeply saddened and confused about my feelings, emotional response and complete breakdown I am experiencing still fro yesterday’s verbal and spacial violation.

Neal Berlin And the Trimet Deke N’Blue

What’s to worry about?  Our now Governor Brown did a great job of watering down and white washing the first TriMet audit when she was then Secretary of State.  As Governor she has continued with more vigor and alll the political skills she has mastered to make TriMet insulated from true public oversight and accountability.  One just look at who she has appointed to the TriMet Board of Directors.  Look how she has made it even more difficult to obtain documents via Freedom Information Of State Documents.  Look at the original audit that came out during ATU 757 contract that took mainly the company,TriMet,side when it came to Compensation for the rank and file.  The rest of the problems where addressed my well meaning platitudes
that will be followed up by a promise of a second State Audit that NEVER happened (in truth it was never going to happen, just sounds good to ATU 757 ears). This smoke and mirrors of really caring of wanting public input was put to death with this Governor singing the 2017 Transportation Bill  that takes money out every Workers paycheck with 90% of that revenue going to TriMet, forever.  The salt on that tax wound is this was done without the vote of people.  This new money given TriMet the power to present a image of carrying about maintenance, safety, low income fares etc. while hiding past malfeasance in those areas and many more with no accountability then or now.  My “three minutes “ are up.  I now convene and call to order the “I Told You So Club “.  First order of business, anyone want to become a member?

Trimet truth team!

Neal Berlin

Just think..... 2.5 minutes saved in each direction?
Blue Lines arrive at Hatfield 2.5 minutes earlier, AND
Blue Lines leave Hatfield 2.5 minutes later.
Means all Blue Line recoveries at Hatfield will bump up 5 minutes.
Let's close those underused stations now.... πŸ™‚ so we all can get home in time to watch more local news touting the virtues and values of the last TrMet pronouncements on wanting public input on predetermined decisions that have not been influenced by passengers or taxpayers needs or desires.  The history of TriMet really listening to anyone except themselves has long history, going back to the very being of the agency on many issues that as President of The I Told You So Club has so many examples of the “ Great Minds” of TriMet where proven not only wrong but the taxpayers in most cases are still bearing the cost of those poor decisions.  If you like I would be more than glad to list them but that would take a very long diatribe, just let state if the agency listen to those of us who stated before the first rail was ever laid, that if a subway was not built in downtown Portland, that first day of operation, MAX will be on track to max out in passenger capacity and speed in getting anywhere.  So it goes... Two Bells.

From the Trimet drivers side

When Billy Badass gets on board and starts causing a ruckus, it automatically registers on my radar as I guide The Beast down the road. First, my attention is distracted from the normal sounds one hears on a bus. That's dangerous, because our focus needs to be mostly centered upon a wide view of the road. Once I'm distracted, the chances of making a costly mistake that could injure many people off or on my bus is multiplied

Memory lane

I’ve been observing today’s operators dealing with all this conflicting rules and regulations and it brings back some memories

The Neal Berlin collection

From the Trimet Drivers side

Because this self-important, entitled nobody decided an upbeat operator was too unprofessional, they called in a complaint after exiting the bus. It was insinuated that this dear, sweet lady had to be under the influence to exhibit such behavior

From the Trimet Drivers Side

Our politically-appointed "Bored" of Directors, which approved taxing the metropolitan-area working class to support its out-of-control management boondoggles, simply sign off on whatever they are told to. Sure, they endure monthly meetings with the public, but they appear disinterested as to whatever public testimony they pay attention to. They're actually nothing but a glorified joke. Pandering as necessary, the board is too accustomed to accepting the status quo to do anything considered to be rocking a leaking boat.

I don't see how ya'II could or would work for a company whose mission is something you oppose.  Sure, I like our retirement, but I spent 25 years working for Trimet.  I am neither ashamed nor embrassed of my time there. I believe in the mission because I believe mass transit is good for any metropolitan area.
I also believe that most employees strive to give the tax payers a good value for the money.  Our retirements are dependent on current employees successfully growing that company.

Local transit management should have been fired years ago, but it has been allowed to run roughshod over its own employees and the communities it serves. It has too much unchecked power for far too long. It promised its employees decades ago to fund a pension and provide medical insurance for a career that results in health issues in lieu of regular pay increases, but when it was caught red-handed having not done so, nobody was disciplined. Somebody should be in jail as a result, but an internet search for this fails to bring up the true story

Doug Kelsey is a true neoliberal transit "professional"

Why won't Portlanders take the bus?

That's the dilemma facing Doug Kelsey, general manager of regional transit agency TriMet. Ridership numbers on public transit have stagnated over the past decade even as Portland's population explodes. That's a common problem across major U.S. cities—but also a black eye for a city that wants to combat climate change.
