WHERE HAVE WE HEARD THIS BEFORE?

Don't rush to blame bus drivers: association

KUALA LUMPUR, Mac 7 (Bernama) -- The Peninsular Malaysia Bus Drivers Association today called on the public and authorities not to be hasty in blaming only the drivers whenever bus accidents occurred in the country.
The Association's president Sa'adan Man said bus drivers should not shoulder the blame solely, as the condition of the buses could also contribute to such accidents, especially fatal ones.
"I suggest that all bus company owners ensure that their vehicles are constantly maintained in good condition," he told Bernama when contacted here today.
He also emphasised that the mandatory death sentence was not appropriate in these cases because it was not a serious offence such as murder or drug trafficking.
Sa'adan further suggested that skilled and experienced drivers should be hired to prevent mishaps in order to maintain the image of the nation's bus drivers.
Meanwhile, Transport Workers Union of Peninsular Malaysia secretary-general Datuk Zainal Rampak remarked that most bus companies did not use original spare parts.
"I think the bus companies want to save cost, so most probably they're using imitation spare parts," he said.
Zainal asserted that this situation indirectly portrayed the bus service in the country as not being on par with required safety standards.
"I advise all bus companies to inspect their vehicles at the computerised vehicle test centre in Puspakom and monitor the condition of the buses before the start of their routes," he added.
