Interesting cost comparison of Transit modes in Portland
I believe that comes from Jim Karlock's site and has been debunked. I think it uses national or state figures for vehicle occupancy and performance which are different in the urban area, and probably doesn't take into account externalized costs like pollution cleanup, most parking, crash response, etc.
Bottom line, 40 people in a bus take up much less room and resources than 40 people in 40 cars needing 40 parking spaces.
