re 8/02: Good god, TriMet just has a different culture than what I was used to. The constant ratting on other union members has me astounded ...and for the dispatcher (who I assume is also a union member) to thank the driver for doing so and even suggest going to a MANAGER at the station to report a fellow union member about the incident is just something that is unsettling to me.
Yes, safety is important ...the MOST important aspect of the job for that matter. However, in my day at our local, we reported similar incidences to a shop steward or a union officer and they would contact the member to counsel and reprimand if necessary. I remember once calling a union officer at home after work when I witnessed something that was blatantly unsafe. He was at the station the next morning to talk to the driver privately.
I really don't understand the concept of ratting on a union brother or sister to a manager. Nor airing an observed rules violation, discourteous conduct, safety infraction, or traffic violation by a co-worker over the radio for the public to hear. We just didn't do that!
757 is missing an opportunity to make a lot of money in fines not to mention promoting stronger solidarity among the membership by handling these incidents in-house rather than promoting the culture of running to management to tattle on another member for doing something that isn't safe, rudeness, violating rules, or for an observed traffic violation.
Maybe times have just changed as it's been over 15 years since I retired so who knows, my local may be doing the same as 757 nowadays.
I find it disgusting, however.
There's no Solidarity anymore, nobody knows anyone. I think the Union Office needs to visit garages more, as well as be out on the line where there is no management. The Union Officers are probably overwhelmed and overworked like the rest of us, but that's my 2 cents....
No, I agree with your point and it's sad. Again, I first joined my ATU local in the 1970s. Unions were stronger then and I immediately felt the sense of solidarity more so than at any other union in which I was a member previous to that ...the feeling that we're all in this together and we need to stick together to "fight" management on unfair practices, discipline, working conditions, etc. --and to-fight-the-good-fight against the continual erosion of wages and benefits. That feeling was pervasive at my local during that time.
You can't sustain a feeling of that necessary solidarity for standing up for those causes if continually ratting on fellow drivers to a supervisor and definitely not to a manager for god's sake! It was unheard of back then. Any problems we had with another member were taken care of in-house.
Listening to your scanner, it really is flabbergasting to hear drivers continually doing that. It's really not comprehensible to me.
And back then, our union officers regularly visited the stations and were even seen on the road at times. I got the feeling that it was their goal to actually meet and get to know every member. It especially made an impression on new employees as it immediately made them feel as part of that larger picture ...that we all need to come together and fight together for what's right and to not be taken advantage of.
Yes, it's sad that such a concept is no longer honored.
And Lisa, I was a shop steward on-and-off during my time as a transit operator. A dedicated network of shop stewards is necessary for a strong union. We volunteered many unpaid hours to help our brothers and sisters sort out problems with each other and also with management. Sure, the officers themselves may be overworked and unable to circulate as much as they should but a strong network of stewards is necessary to help them with the load.
Our dues are being paid for the salaries of the officers. They need to earn that salary too even if they themselves have to volunteer some time in the effort to talk and meet with as many members as possible. I had always thought it was one of their main responsibilities to get out and meet with members ...that's a major part of what we're paying them for. They must keep in touch with the needs and concerns of the workforce. Our officers were getting paid good money for those positions and we should hold their feet to the fire to see that they execute the duties we voted them in office to perform.
