In Portland's heart, 2010 Census shows diversity dwindling

Portland, already the whitest major city in the country, has become whiter at its core even as surrounding areas have grown more diverse.

This series confirmed what I have suspected for a long time.

Just like TriMet, the City of Portland is putting all of it's efforts and $$$$ into building and serving mostly white neighborhoods. How has redevelopment in the Pearl, South Waterfront and streetcars linking the two and possibly going to Lake Oswego helped minorities and families with children?

Let's face it, TriMet's Yellow line would never have been built if those North Portland neighborhoods were not already being transformed from minority to "creative class hipster" areas.

Like the rest of the nation, Portland is rapidly becoming the city of the have and have nots.

As Jack would say:
"GO BY STREETCAR"!

There actually is a good amount of affordable housing in the Pearl District and slated for South Waterfront. In addition, the area the Green Line serves isn't exactly middle-/upper-class either.

As for the Yellow Line, the problem I read was that the city did not help the existing (many minority) residents be able to withstand the effects.
