I usually press the fare evasion button one to three times per shift every time I drive the #67.There are many riders using the "Y" pass at Rock Creek that are not 17 years old.Others board using a transfer with the wrong daycode on it as well.
Yet, it was all of this bus "fare evasion" that prompted the elimination of Fareless Square, which was originally floated because of drug dealing problems at the Lloyd Center MAX station (and also in Gresham and Rockwood, which isn't even in Fareless Square but was part of the discussion.)
It's a count of just one scenario of the fare evasion spectrum: 1) A clever sleight of hand or transfer alteration in the midst of bus ops - an operator doesn't catch it, so its not recorded. 2) One of the dozens of rider mistakes or purposeful attempts at using bad transfers daily - operators catch it and insist they pay, so its not recorded. 3) The rider claims that they don't have full fare, so operators make a judgement call and they ride - or don't. Recorded? Maybe. 4) Item 2 occurs and the person says they're riding anyway, so then it's recorded on the BDS and get on with the run. 5) Item 2 occurs and the person is so belligerent or threatening that operator ties the bus up and insist they get off. Does this get recorded on the BDS? Depends.
So, it's mostly a count of where Trimet blinks in the face of known evasion.

I never saw even one fare evader during all the years I have driven this run.
Then again I couldn't actually read the transfers so maybe I was fooled.
Never had a problem with people paying fares however.
Those youth passes at PCC are actually people that are attending a high school GED or equivalency program which makes them eligible for that pass.
