poor poor weak little TriMet being bullied by the big mean union. Considering TriMet's $50-$75 million contribution to the Orange Line (numbers vary depending on who you ask I think), the union contract is hardly the part breaking the bank. And as Erik said, YOU guys aren't the ones who picked the health care vendors
If Trimet was really serious in their budget discussion they would have included
THESE POSSIBILITIES in the discussion

If the management took a pay salary cut to compensate for the union health care benefits and made union supervisors non union, I think that would be a win win for everybody.
There is no way management could ever make that kind of money anywhere else for what they do.
This is unbelievable, how on earth does management expect to get ANY respect from its own workers now? They REFUSE to take a pay cut, they REFUSE to find solutions that dont take from the tables of the working class.
Its time for TriMet to get a clue! They are biting the hand that feeds here!
This is absolutely uncalled for. Why is TriMet using a public forum to bitch about a labor issue?
Why isn't TriMet addressing MY 24 points that I've asked repeatedly for TriMet to justify why they don't address? It seems TriMet has a mind of its own and feels it is not accountable to anyone...TriMet poisoned the labor matter itself and got caught doing it, instead of moving forward TriMet is stuck in reverse.
Even I agree that there are things that the ATU needs to acknowledge...but TriMet poisoned the discussion, so TriMet needs to look elsewhere right now. I've pointed out 24 items, the sum of which would save far more than enough money to cover the shortfall now and for years to come. WITHOUT touching labor expense (except for those do-nothing marketing, capital projects, and government relations people.)
Why doesn't TriMet post THIS on its website, with detailed answers?
The more I think about this, the more I think that TriMet is wanting to declare Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy (which would end up allowing TriMet to instill whatever contract it wants)...but if it declared Chapter 9, then light rail expansion is DEAD for a long time. And obviously...TriMet does NOT want to stop the light rail empire, so it can't declare Chapter 9. Thus - attack the employees.
They want to build their light rail empire, and they want to do it on THE BACKS OF ITS EMPLOYEES!
But using its public information site as a TOOL FOR PROPAGANDA is beyond despicable.
Shame shame shame on Neil Macfarlane
If Neil was serious about "transparency" (and we know he's not) - TriMet would be sharing the results of the survey as they come in. I mean, it's been up for a few weeks and though they say they've gotten hundreds of responses and some things have "floated to the top" like reducing the streetcar subsidy, we haven't seen a breakdown of what people have picked or what's gone in to the "open comments" section.
I'm wondering if the union busting is because they're not getting the answers they wanted on that survey....
I just read this "Story" the first thing that came to mind was are they trying to create a hostile work environment for every front line employee? then my mind wondered to 3-5% since 2001 I have not received ANYTHING over 3%. so tell the truth. THEN thinking about the Cost of Benefits.. lets look CLOSER at those numbers, $18,000.00 per employee, when the RFP was set out what was/is the COMMISSION rate's being paid to a Broker? I cant find this, is it 5% - 12%...
