Trimet general Manger Neil Mcfarlane continues raiding the treasury

And he is unapologetic of course. He does what he wants and his pal sitting at the governors desk gives him  carte blanche so why the hell would he care what anybody else thinks. He gets rich, all of his pals get rich and everybody else can suck air. In any event the JOE ROSE story on this generated some great comments which are listed below

From a prior O story "In fact, a list of the top 50 non-union pay increases (PDF) obtained by The Oregonian shows that McFarlane started green-lighting raises for managers making $110,700 or more in February 2012, even as he publicly talked about how he had frozen their pay. " McFarland apologized saying" We need to work on transparency" McFarland is a liar and the Oregonian just let it go. They drummed Jeff Cogan out of office for having an affair and yet when McFarland lied about $970,000 in raises they just shrug their shoulders and say " Hopefully they'll work on being more transparent.

Portland, You deserve what you get! You've spent the last four decades voting in the most incompetent and corrupt leaders Possible.

Yes, five of the raises were attached to promotions. Two were raises were given to existing managers. The question: Is a 12 percent "market adjustment" appropriate at a time when the average Oregonian lucky enough to get a raise is averaging 1.9 percent and this transit agency is calling for a cut in union compensation? I'm not taking sides. But as a watchdog of this agency, the public expects me to keep an eye on these matters. And there is a history here that led to an unprecedented state audit of TriMet:

McFarlane should have been fired for misappropriation of funds. Most organizations would terminate an executive who did that. Witness what happened to the black Portland City Admin official under Hales. Luckily, TriMets rules for executive malfeasance have a very low bar indeed.
"Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
An old adage, but so very appropriate in today's age of secrecy.
TriMet must think the public is dumb as a sack of rocks not to see through this scam.
Avoid using this corrupt service until appropriate oversight is appointed, and management fired
.

You have to keep the public spotlight on TriMet management, or they'll continue to loot the system.Oregon is so vastly corrupt.

...what disgusts me even more is that this story has to have a picture of the biggest financial sinkhole in the system, WES, which TM gambled the entire system's future on and which is sucking the lifeblood out of bus service with its 14$ per passenger operating cost.

Cant kill it or TM (actually both the taxpayers and ridership here) will have to reimburse the feds 59$ million so we are stuck with this money leech for the next sixteen years insuring even more bus service reductions to keep paying to run it..

Talk about misdirected priorities.

" In March, an investigation by The Oregonian found that McFarlane dipped into a rainy day fund in late 2012 to pay for $910,000 in non-union raises, even as he supported cutting service for the fifth time in four years and raising fares." Well now Joe aren't you leaving out something? Didn't McFarland state publicly that there was a wage freeze on when in reality he was giving raises to non union workers? Didn't that happen? Why did you leave that out? Both McFarland and some Tri-met board members knew that those raises were happening yet they said " no there is a wage freeze on" What's that called again when people do that? Lying? McFarland lied about it. He is a liar. He should have been terminated for doing that.

Rehash every nuance? What? What? Lying about it is not a nuance. You could have wrote " an investigation by The Oregonian found that McFarlane dipped into a rainy day fund in late 2012 to pay for $910,000 in non-union raises, publicly lied about doing so and then....... " How hard would that be? Not too hard.

Love the words used. " Records show that McFarlane tucked the raises " Tucked the raises? Why use the word tucked? It makes it sound rather innocuous. " Well I just tucked them in here and there" Tucked? He hid those raises from the public. He didn't "tuck" them anywhere.

".. spokeswoman, explained that the two .....were promoted to positions with more duties early last year and are just now being compensated financially."

That's not an explanation? Especially in the environment of mistrust which TriMet created.
It's a cheap remark used to avoid any real explanation.

An explanation might include what the new duties are, the previous job descriptions, the new job descriptions along with why they actually deserve more money.

If they were promoted early last year why didn't they get the pay raise then to go with it?

Were they really new positions and actual promotions?
Some may assume the worst. That these raises are cooperation payments an advance of the TriMet audit about to be released.
But I'm not that cynical. :)

"TriMet has said giving promotions without adequate raises would likely force talented employees to flee to other markets."

There isn't really any other "market" for people with urban studies and public administration degrees.

Most places hire MBA's for the business side of things, and engineers for the planning side of things. This is true in the private sector as well as in government.

Maybe they should force the "talented" employees to flee to another market and hire people who actually know what they are doing. Or better yet, eliminate the positions all together.

Slightly off topic, but is TriMet exempt from anti-trust regulations? It seems that they have gone the route of ma' bell and a breakup is in order.

"Now, please let me introduce you to our director and manager of the CRC route, and who is being compensated in line with the fees paid to the Project and Toll-Revenue Planners."

"And while we haven't laid any track as yet, our managers assure me the gold-painted shovels tied with ribbon on the handles are at-the-ready for the ground-breaking ceremonies."

"Entertainment will be provided by the Bhutan Dance Company. But, in the interest of budget-balancing, those costs will be reimbursed by the Governor's travel account . . . "

(The speaker turns around before sitting down, just to make sure a chair is still there . . . )

"Tri Met has said giving promotions without adequate raises would likely force talented employees to flee to other markets". What other markets, WINCO?

Outrageous! 12%???? and the reason is to keep talent? if they don't like working for the public then get a job in the private sector. I highly doubt people pack up and move to a different part of the country solely based on pay increase. does this mean that other trimet employees aren't talented ? this really makes me sick

Somehow, the buzz word "transparent" does not make stupid decisions by someone running an organization that is circling the drain seem the least bit acceptable. It rather shows how blatantly defiant this so called "manager" has become.
...why doesn't this surprise me? More bus service cuts on the way, higher taxes on local employers, most likely another fare increase soon. Yet more raises for management and admin. McFarlaine should have been sacked for raiding the contingency fund to give executives pay raises last year while claiming the agency can't survive without reducing service and raising fares. Just another example of the "good ol boy" mentality hat has ruined what once was a good transit system.

This is making me sick.

Disgusting that they do this but don't clean their trains or buses, don't enforce their own smoking ban and are still overloaded with aging buses that need replacement.

..."would.likely force talented people to other markets"...

Lotta good THAT did!

Shelly Lomax got her fat raise and yet STILL applied to be a GM for a Transit Agency in WA.

Lilia Montoya was hired from Union Pacific as a new Asst Garage Manager at Center St. and left for L.A. Metro with 6 months on the job here!

The writings on the wall for all to see...everyone in mid to senior management wants to or is abandoning ship!
