It's the money used out of the general fund to pay for loans/credit used to buy stuff in the past.

Now, we all know what TriMet isn't buying: buses.

We all know what TriMet IS buying: light rail.

We all know light rail isn't free or cheap. And the feds don't pay 100% of the cost of it.

Ta da. General Fund Debt Service. And is 100% of this cost allocated exclusively to rail users?

NO!

There you have it. Take this cost, allocate it against ALL TriMet riders, and you have that bus riders are subjected to paying a MAX cost.

Notice, also, how in 2008/2009 it was only $8.5 million, and now it's $31.1 million. Let's get that little calculator out...

31.1 minus 8.5 equals $22.6 million.

How large is TriMet's budget deficit? $17 million?

And TriMet is blaming the union...why?
