TriMet's Culture of Safety
The good news is that Night Stop is coming soon. The bad news is that it wouldn't have helped here, thanks to the great planning by TriMet and the City of Portland that prevented this bus from making a curb stop. (And the bus stop sign and shelter are next to that blue car, and yes that is a "legal" parking space for the cars right where the bus stop SHOULD be.)

Safety only applies to bus operators, not management decisions!
Now you of all people should know that Erik! (sic)
Erik,I frequently drive the 12 and 44.I am glad that you pointed out that stop on 4th.It gives me fits.
I've made complaints to TriMet about this bus stop and it seems TriMet simply doesn't care. I made complaints about the buses having to make triple-lane-changes a full year before TriMet did anything about it (proof that you have to kill someone before anything gets done at TriMet.)
And this bus stop only exists because of a design flaw with the Transit Mall in that buses that make a straight-shot for 6th Avenue don't have a stop until Market (such as the 94 bus) totally skipping past PSU - the area's largest transit generator. So the 12/44 buses were forced to keep this bus stop after all the other buses were moved over (and some buses like the 1 simply sail through PSU).
And yet despite the OBVIOUS SAFETY AND DESIGN FAILURES...this bus stop remains in its current condition, so buses like this 44 are forced to make their stop ten feet away from the curb posing a significant safety hazard especially for ADA and elderly passengers.
If this were a MAX station...oh boy the money would be flowing...
Steve - when do you drive the 12?
The next time that I drive it will be November 29th.
I'll be at work that day but if you're headed my way in the afternoon I'll catch you.
I will be at 5th and Morrison at 2:30 pm, so I will miss you...Train 1270.
Hey Erik, Don't forget your video camera but don't let Steve know your filming anything because we can't blog while we driver but we can talk while we drive, at least so far.
