Too bad the big thinkers at Tri Met didn't have the foresight to see that for a healthy agency you need to have a healthy work force. There was a big push of safety, that probably cost millions of dollars, and it seems to be a loosing effort. If they would have thought of the front line workers as people instead just another part of the system, that would be a start. Drivers are expected to be costumer service agents, safe drivers, and security guards, all at the same time. Our general manager wants to blame the union employees for the budget mess they are in. The bottom line is they new what their obligations were to the workers while they were spending money on other things (WES) New light rail expansion. It seems to me that taking care of the people that are risking their lives, to keep the system runnig should be a top priority.
The stress levels that transit workers experience takes an incredible toll, and is shown in study after study to be a major factor in all sorts of life shortening illness. Cutting pay and limiting the insurance is going to end up costing the agency more money in the long run, due to increased time loss, low moral, and lack of access to timely health care.
This is not a normal job, it has an effect on workers over time that changes them, from friendly to unfriendly. It is the exposure to everything all at once. that creates this mental fatigue.
In my opinion management is missing an opportunity to make things right. I encourage everyone the uses Tri met to read this. http://consumer.healthday.com/... show less
