As someone who has lived in the Portland Metro area for a lifetime, how do subways deal with breakdowns? Obviously a NYC subway isn't going to get hit by a car, but a train can break down. What do they do? What kind of redundancy do they have? Does it block the line, do they run buses, do they have a parallel track . . . ??
