Gangs and crime ride into town on MAX, survey finds
Al I don't agree. The furthest i'm going to go is to believe that the addition of improved public transportation may shift crime from other areas, but I don't believe that it creates/increases it.
Of course, construction of an airport (or Clackamas Town Center itself) does the same as well. I'm sure there was very little crime in the field before PDX was constructed; and now there is definitely crime present there.
The construction of Clackamas Town Center also caused the crime rate for that area to go up, as well. But did it create/increase crime overall? That's hard to say.
Maybe I should alert KATU and they should report on it -- only this story would have some actual data supporting it rather than anecdotal "evidence."
I agree that MAX does NOT create crime, it's the poverty that creates the crime.
And most people that use mass transit are generally economically disadvantaged so there will be more crime on mass transit than places without mass transit.

It's reasonable to assume that mass transit-being used primarily by the economically disadvantaged, does indeed increase crime.
Poorer people ride mass transit and crime is higher in areas of poverty.
It is a reasonable assumption.
It's not a reason to stop building mass transit systems however.
