Someone had called 911 to report an operator that they
believed was driving while under the influence.
The person said it was a line 58 heading to Beaverton TC. However, the only 58 still out at the time
had just left BTC heading to Portland. Police
did not feel the complaint was credible, but myself and unit 9115 still met
with the operator.
When I spoke to the operator he could not recall any incident that had
happened where another auto or passenger had gotten upset at him. He did not seem to be under any influence at
the time either. I told him that
Supervisor Coller called me and told me that Mr. Coller was behind the operator
at Walker road and noticed that the operator did not use any kind of signals on
his bus when he picked up passengers.
When I asked if maybe this could have been what the other person was
complaining about, the operator said he always signals when he picks up
passengers. Then he went on to say that
if he is at a red light and stopped anyway, that he sometimes does not signal
because he is already stopped. I told
him he should always signal when he is picking up passengers because the light
could turn green while he is boarding the passenger and other drivers will not
understand why he is not moving. He said
he would make sure to signal every time.
The operator later came up to me and said there was an inbound 58 at the
time of the complaint also. That bus was
garage bound and was now at the garage.
I looked it up and found out that 58/69 should have been pulling into
BTC at 8:29pm.
I did not see the bus pull in and Dispatch did not notice him on their
screen. While I do not know why Dispatch
did not see the bus, I do know that he should have pulled in to the Transit
Center before heading to the garage. By
the time we figured this out, the operator had already parked his bus at the
garage and was off duty. I will meet
with the operator tomorrow and speak to him about not pulling in to the Transit
Center before heading to the garage.
